Someone needs to study the correlation between software team naming and performance. In my experience if a team has a "badass" or "cool" name (e.g. Avengers, Phoenix, Vanguard) they are usually uhhh not very good. Teams with silly/whimsical names are usually excellent at what they do.

I suspect there's something there about silliness and how it correlates with creativity and psychological safety. People who take the work, but not themselves, too seriously, are often the smartest and most creative.

Teams with "boring" names which just describe what they work on can go either way but usually lean towards being good. Maybe they don't have the silly, creative side, but they're often the "I do my work quietly and excellently. Do not invite me to the pub I will not come" type.

I think an overlooked impact of the @tanstack.com hack (and ones like it) is the embarrassment for techies having to say things like "mini shai hulud" and "wormy boi" out loud. Humiliation ritual for people trying to be taken seriously by management.

The insane proliferation of blind boxes. Every company is so bereft of innovation that their best idea for a new product is *gambling*. Consumer confidence and disposable income is so low that the most anyone can afford is 10 or 20 bucks for a quick dopamine hit and a bit of plastic tat.

Flashbacks to the shitty amateur trivia night where they asked for Gandhi's given name. I convinced my table to write down Mohandas instead of Mahatma. My absolute nerd rage when they tried to give everyone a point except us! 😤 In the end they gave everyone a point which felt even worse, somehow.

they asked what George Lucas film was #1 in 1977 and he said "Star Wars" and they said it was actually Star Wars IV A New Hope

When I'm president of the universe, anyone who makes a link which overrides Cmd+Click to open in the current tab instead of a new tab, will be immediately fired into the sun. Same for those who implement links as <button>s.

Why is it *de*-oderant but *anti*-perspirant? De- implies removal, anti- implies prevention. Shouldn't it be antioderant? Deo won't help if you already stink, the only true deodorant is a shower.

We should get rid of the 5 cent coin. Then we actually don't need cents at all, we only need decs. The 10/20/50 cent coins would become 1/2/5 dec coins. Prices wouldn't be like $3.40, they'd be like $3.4. No need for the extra decimal place. Could be fun.

Actually the best life advice I ever got: Anything worth doing is worth doing poorly. A half-cleaned room is better than an uncleaned room. Occasionally flossing is better than never flossing. A 10-minute workout is better than no workout. When it’s all you can do to get out of bed, get out of bed.

There was an Indian / Sri Lankan /Malaysian place near me which use to do THE BEST masala dosa in the freaking world. Family owned joint, it was there for yonks. Stayed takeaway-only post-lockdown, then they sold the restaurant, it went downhill and it eventually shut. Devastated.

I don't need an AI coding assistant. What I need is a pull-request tool that can tell me when code has *moved*, either up/down or to another file. The fact that diffs are still nothing but additions and deletions since basically forever feels so primitive.

This year I discovered that my productivity directly correlates to the number of weird time signatures and polyrhythms in the music I'm listening to. Thank you Chon, Covet, Plini, Animals as Leaders and more for helping me get shit done.

This is kinda selfish but as a not-American is there a way to create a bsky feed without all the American doomposting? Like I get your country is fucked and I feel bad for you and I support your right to scream into the void but I don't need to hear it 24/7, I'm just here for the lols and dopamine.

You are up to date.
