⁉️Everyone asks: what will the energy transition cost? ✅Better question is: what does it pay back? Our new research estimates 💰️€826bn in annual monetised co-benefits by 2030 👷‍♀️8.5 million full-time-equivalent employment years ❤️‍🩹34,000 premature deaths prevented every year ⬇️Read & share our new report

caneurope.orgNew flagship research: Europe’s energy transition could save 34,000 lives and deliver €826 billion a year by 2030The report puts numbers on benefits of climate action that are often missing from debates focused on the cost of the transition: lower energy expenditure, new jobs, better health, fewer working days lost to illness and avoided global climate damage.

“Planning for a world that could warm by 3°C is responsible risk management, but this must never lead to acceptance of a 3°C increase." Today, @ec.europa.eu presented the Climate Resilience Framework to better prepare Europe for worsening heatwaves, droughts, floods and other climate impacts.

caneurope.orgPreparedness has to become an integral part of how governments plan, invest and protect peopleFrom families to farmers and factory workers to firefighters, Europeans are already living with the climate crisis, but too often they are left to deal with the consequences alone.

You know what’s crazy? 🎬 Our trade & investment campaigner Frances Verkamp explains how #ISDS gives big business both sword & shield to attack our policies of public interest, not least of all climate action. This insidious corporate weapon has got to go. ✊ Take action! Link in comment.

Burning gas steals our future ‼️ We need a gas phase-out plan now.

Greenpeace EU@greenpeace.eu

BREAKING: @greenpeace.be climbers are on the roof of the European Parliament in Brussels, protesting the EU's dependence on dirty, expensive fossil fuels Burning gas ruins Europe – it fuels the climate crisis, and financially ruins households with sky-high energy bills

Postponing methane rules will not increase gas supplies, lower prices, or improve energy security. The current energy challenges are driven by global supply shocks and continued dependence on fossil fuels, not by methane rules.

Meanwhile, more than 200 bcm of gas is wasted globally every year through methane leaks, venting and flaring - equivalent to around two-thirds of the EU’s annual gas consumption. Europe cannot improve energy security by delaying measures designed to reduce energy waste. Time to implement!

Time to phase out US LNG imports and fossil gas altogether! 🚫

💰 New Research: For European customers, gas from the US is already the most expensive, and is projected to become even more expensive. 1 in 4 EU households and many businesses already struggle with energy poverty. But even as US gas prices rise, the EU is becoming increasingly reliant on it.

Today, EU Environment Ministers meet as the EU shapes its post-2030 climate & energy framework. EU businesses, leading local & regional government networks, & civil society organisations call for a framework aligned with & able to deliver at least 90% net domestic emissions reductions by 2040. 1/2👇

Today we're out in the streets. We're here because climate action cannot wait any longer. Our message to policymakers: A fossil fuel phase-out plan. Concrete. Fair. Now. 💚There are thousands of us. Where are you? 👉 marcheclimat.be #LetsLeaveFossilFuelsTogether #CLIMATEMARCH26

What can happen when a neighbourhood decides to produce and share its own renewable energy?💡In 2020, around 300 residents of Lisbon’s Telheiras neighbourhood came together to think about how they could make their community more sustainable. 1/6🧵 #buildbetterlives

Today, the Telheiras/Lumiar Renewable Energy Community generates renewable electricity through solar photovoltaic systems installed on public buildings and shares it with nearby residents, small businesses, condominiums and local organisations. 3/6🧵#buildbetterlives

⚡ But the project is about more than generating electricity. Households experiencing energy poverty can participate without an upfront investment, pay a substantially reduced annual fee and retain the same voting rights as other members. 4/6🧵#buildbetterlives

One of the ideas was: “Let’s produce our own renewable energy and share it among neighbours.” Turning that idea into reality took years of collective effort, technical support and persistence. Coopérnico supported the community with technical and legal guidance. 2/6🧵 #buildbetterlives

🌍 COP31 is one month away - and our delegation is getting ready to head to Antalya. As governments prepare for the next round of UN climate negotiations, CAN Europe is setting out seven priorities for COP31. 💬 Curious about what’s at stake? Ask us anything about COP31 in comments!

📢 Ahead of the October Environment & Energy Councils, the Coalition for Higher Ambition calls for a robust post-2030 EU climate & energy framework: strong domestic emissions cuts, a predictable EU ETS, binding climate & energy targets, & investment in Europe’s transition. Europe’s cheapest gas this winter is the gas it’s leaking out of the pipes. As energy ministers gather for the informal Energy Council amid a renewed push to reopen EU Methane Rules steered by France, one question can't be ignored: how much gas is wasted before it even reaches the EU market? 1/6🧵👇

What's missing is full implementation of existing methane abatement technologies - and a legal framework that holds suppliers accountable. Robust implementation of the #EUMethaneRegulation is a critical first step, but the destination must remain a full phase-out of fossil gas by 2035. 5/6 🧵👇

Include methane emissions from oil operations, and that potential more than doubles. In other words, fossil fuel suppliers could unlock significant supply simply by stopping the leaks - while the EU continues the transition away from fossil fuels. 3/6 🧵👇

And this isn't a cost problem: around half of these reductions across the EU's top eight suppliers can be achieved at negative or near-zero cost, since recovered methane can be sold or reinjected straight into the supply chain. 4/6 🧵👇

CAN Europe's new policy brief shows the scale of the problem - and the opportunity: across the EU's eight largest gas supplier countries, methane abatement could recover the equivalent of twice the EU's 2025 LNG imports from Qatar. 2/6 🧵👇

🚨New policy brief: Cutting methane from the EU’s top gas suppliers could recover twice the gas imported from Qatar in 2025. After a summer of devastating climate impacts and with gas prices spiking, implementing the #EUMethaneRegulation is a key energy security and climate measure👉 sl1nk.com/aib2v5l

Finally there’s a chance to make polluters pay 🔥 In just 24 hours, ministers will decide if they tax the extraordinary profits of Big Oil. Since the start of the War in Iran, European households saw their energy bills skyrocket. Again.

Important signals in @vonderleyen.ec.europa.eu SOTEU speech. But recognising the problem is not enough. We can't keep responding to climate disasters, volatile energy prices & industrial pressures one crisis at a time. What's missing is a plan on how to make this fossil fuel crisis Europe's last.

caneurope.org“Europe does not have to choose between climate action, energy security and competitiveness."“In fact, it cannot. Phasing out fossil fuels is how we protect people from volatile energy prices and strengthen Europe’s industrial and geopolitical resilience, while also cutting emissions.”
