20,000 km2 of standing Amazon kept since 2022, per Carbon Brief. For CDR this is the baseline: avoided deforestation keeps carbon stored, but it is not removal. The forest sink that offsets residual emissions only exists if the trees stay up.
UPDATED – Analysis: Lula presidency saved at least 20,000km2 of Brazilian Amazon since 2022 ✍️ By @orladwyer.carbonbrief.org and @joshgabbatiss.bsky.social 💬 With comments from @claudioangelo.bsky.social Read here: buff.ly/QqRBFfy
A 2050 total scores a stock as a flow: 2100 storage must be permitted and proven by 2050. @chrisbataille.bsky.social warns: dreams fail, unabated combustion returns. https://www.captaindrawdown.com/posts/captains-cdr-log-298/
€3.4B, ~€44M per project. Furu's cap is a fifth of that, none for operations. @glenpeters.bsky.social: net zero CO2 is needed eventually. Removal supply is this early. https://www.captaindrawdown.com/posts/captains-cdr-log-297/
Google felled 250,000 trees for a data centre. @markgongloff.bsky.social: AI will fix climate after it wrecks it. Forest sink lost; same buildout funds Texas biochar. https://www.captaindrawdown.com/posts/captains-cdr-log-296/
A 1.7-1.8°C peak takes an 18% emissions cut in four years. @davidho.bsky.social: that matches the 2020 COVID drop. Each point missed raises the peak and the bill. https://www.captaindrawdown.com/posts/captains-cdr-log-295/
Point of Return" in the 2026 UNEP Emissions Gap Report title hints at overshoot, and overshoot asks CDR to reverse warming, not just offset residual emissions. But removal later is no excuse to cut less now. Read Joeri Rogelj's thread for the data.
The 2026 UNEP Emissions Gap Report is out: The Point of Return. 🌍🌡️🔥 It's sobering but actionable. Decades of inadequate climate action have closed off opportunities to limit warming, but ambitious action today can still prevent much greater harm. A thread of some of the highlights 🧵
Carbon Standards' draft verifies biochar plants via continuous data, not snapshots. It's undated and doesn't cover this week's Terraton or Applied Carbon tonnes. https://www.captaindrawdown.com/posts/captains-cdr-log-294/
