I had dozens and probably hundreds of $3 paperbacks on my shelf by age 12. I spent my allowance on them. I spent my birthday money on them. I spent babysitting and lawn-mowing money on them. Because they were only $3. Bring back cheap paperbacks!

"...under the leadership of the Big Five and their equally hegemonic national retail partners, the flagship product favored by elite-facing bookstores in wealthy enclaves got cheaper, and the format with the proven mass potential got many times more expensive." 📚 jacobin.com/2026/10/book...

Between 2012 and 2014, the coffee leaf rust disease caused many Central American coffee farmers to have zero production, exacerbating existing economic insecurity and displacing 373,000 people across Central America according to some estimates.

Since then, highly erratic weather patterns have led to increased drought and flooding, resulting in a loss in 60% of the Central American coffee harvest in 2018. The low-income groups whose livelihoods rely on coffee production, have been driven to migrate, both internally and to the USA.

"Migration will rise as development gains begin to reverse and more people are pushed into poverty, food and water insecurity. A one percentage increase in food insecurity in a population compels 1.9 percent more people to migrate."

"Case study: failing coffee harvests driving migration from Central America to the USA Food insecurity and lack of economic opportunities are the main drivers of migration in Central America, ahead of corruption, poor governance and serious organised crime.

Ezra Klein is a serious threat to a world of true equality and justice because he is so effective at masking his service to the ruling class through (often faux) intellectual cooptation of progressive people who otherwise would support much more profound social change.

I could not be happier for her. She works so hard and put a lot of herself into this book. And I'll never see that expectant and curious young girl on the cover and not spend a moment reflecting on her grandmother Sylvia, a delightful lady who was such an influence on J.

Writers spend so much of their career isolated, going days and weeks without feedback from colleagues or readers. Those "little wins" I get teaching math, when a student has that "A-ha!" moment, are fewer and farther between for J. So when something like this comes up, it REALLY MATTERS.

She had a great time out in NYC on stage, answering questions from a group of middle schoolers, and spent the balance of the day with her agent, Joan, and her cousin. When she came home the next day she showed me the hardware she'd landed. I'm talking Olympics-size medal here.

Gotta give a shout out to J. This is such a huge win and so well deserved. She wrote a triumph here and you should read it. The other nominees put her in great company; when she learned she was up for this prize and saw the company she was in, she was thrilled.
