My neighborhood is getting major street resurfacing in Utrecht's Low Emission Zone (LEZ). Utrecht makes an exception for gas-powered heavy road maintenance vehicles within the LEZ, so I'm super-impressed by how much of the road construction fleet is is fully electric including this asphalt roller!

The 100%-electric trucks that really impress me in Utrecht's "milieuzones" are the huge refrigerated grocery trucks. Supply chains have changed radically for the better because of low emission zones.

I'm so honored to be included in the speaker lineup for this @londoncycling.bsky.social event on Thursday Oct 22! Even more, I'm excited to see bike infrastructure improvements in London and meet LCC staff and advocates!

🥁 This Thursday sees Innovations in Urban Cycling, in partnership with Osbornes Law, come to The Building Centre... 🗣️ 🚲️ We can't wait to hear from speakers across the continent about just what we can learn here in London. Find out more: buff.ly/aE4mCoM

The rich and powerful have sunk trillions into concrete, steel & fossil fuels that benefit them, not us. Our lives and our bodies are on the line. Car culture kills & maims millions of us every year, especially our children & people who are poor or old or disabled. We must win this #WARonWALKING

Urban Truth Collective@urbantruth.bsky.social

Sometimes the WAR ON WALKING results in no sidewalks at all. Sometimes they put “something” in — but does that really make things walkable for anyone except those without any other choices? The #WARonWALKING takes many forms, but it’s always about making things comfortable for vehicles, not people.

Paris is a city that's been WINNING the WAR ON WALKING. In the past decade city leaders built 300+ School Streets, launched a 15-minute city and reclaimed their downtown waterfront. It's a place people can enjoy an evening outside on what used to be a car freeway. This is what every city deserves.

Urban Truth Collective@urbantruth.bsky.social

Don’t buy the lie about a war on cars. They’ve been waging a WAR ON WALKING for a century. #UrbanTruth #WarOnWalking

By definition, cities are places for people. The best cities are walking cities. The WAR ON WALKING is anti-city, and an attack on our future life on earth.

No matter what they claim, the REAL “war” that’s been going on in our cities has been a WAR ON WALKING. And it’s been going on for a century. #UrbanTruth

Bike infrastructure gets a tiny fraction of all transportation space and money. This is true in Portland as well as other US cities. Of the 68 paved lanes between I-405 and the Willamette, 6 are dedicated to transit, 4 to bikes, 58 to cars.

Cities aren't loud. Cars are loud. Your city doesn't have too much traffic. Your city has too many cars. #Utrecht rush hour 🚲❤️ Steden maken geen lawaai. Auto's maken lawaai. Er is niet te veel verkeer in jouw stad. Er zijn te veel auto's in jouw stad. #Utrecht spits 🚲❤️

Not every pedestrian street will work year-round, at least not yet. Some need to be strengthened/revitalized first. The street has to already be reasonably successful as a sustainable summer people-magnet. Vancouver’s Granville Street isn’t ready yet. Seattle’s Pike Place IS ready to be year-round.

Gordon Padelford@gordonofseattle.bsky.social

Tom Graff at the Market Historical Commission tonight: “there is no one walking on [Pike Place] in January or February” Odd, who were all these people walking on the street this Jan/Feb? I guess I have a lot more imaginary friends than I realized

This mashup from @brenttoderian.bsky.social + @katharinehayhoe.com makes sense. Cities have always been resilient, diverse, amalgamations of humanity, where proximity breeds creativity & tolerance. We need that creativity & tolerance on hyperdrive to demand an achievable climate future.
