UK energy company Drax has proposed a tree-burning, dangerous datacenter that could produce nearly double the emissions of all Gatwick flights, making it “one of the dirtiest datacenters out there.” https://on.nrdc.org/4rTNMKI

Lynemouth biomass power station, and billionaire owner Daniel Křetisnký, have been getting special permission to release toxic air pollutants. They say they don't have enough ££ to clean up their act. Tell the Government not to renew their permit to pollute. actionnetwork.org/letters/stop...

actionnetwork.orgStop Lynemouth's Permit to Pollute: No Special Treatment for Billionaires or BiomassJust a few weeks ago the Government signed a £1.1bn deal agreeing new subsidies with Lynemouth, the UK’s sixth largest polluter. Just like Drax, Lynemouth burns trees from precious forests around the ...

The more CO2 pollution Drax releases, the more low-carbon subsidies it receives. £8 billion in subsidies since 2015, and over 137 million tonnes of CO2 released. #CutCarbonNotForests

UK Gov has published its respond to the Independent Review of Greenhouse Gas Removals (by Dr Alan Whitehead). It's disappointing and continues to refer to future use of BECCS (bioenergy with carbon capture), without ruling out ongoing imports of woody biomass. www.gov.uk/government/p...

Good article about #BECCS by @mjflepage.bsky.social : www.newscientist.com/article/2522... "BECCS...is ridiculously expensive, would be catastrophic for biodiversity if it were done on this scale and... it doesn’t even work. It actually increases CO2 emissions...on the timescales that matter."

newscientist.comA key solution to climate change isn't happening – and that's goodRemoving CO2 from the atmosphere by capturing the carbon from burning biomass is supposed to save the planet, but it looks like the flagship project will never happen

No matter what #Drax says today, communities know the truth. People across the South are demanding an end to #biomass subsidies and #forest destruction. As Ms. Kathy England told Drax staff: “We are only armed with the truth… What is Drax so afraid of?”

Last week, a group of #environmentalists and community #activists took a cruise along the Cape Fear River to examine the impacts of the wood pellet industry on North Carolina’s #ecosystems and communities.

When wood pellets are transported by trains in the UK they are strictly covered over. When they're moved on trucks through US communities, they are left open. At their AGM yesterday Drax told us this was a "mistake", like it only happened one time...

At this year's Drax AGM Dr Krystal Martin and Katherine Egland will aim to talk about the impacts of biomass on their communities. At last year's AGM the company tried to "silence their voices". This year Drax's Board + CEO will attend via video link. www.theguardian.com/business/202...

This week we're joining up with Dr Krystal Martin (Greater Greener Gloster) and Katherine Egland to highlight the health impacts of UK biomass demand on US communities where wood pellets are made. #CutCarbonNotForests www.yorkshirepost.co.uk/business/cam...

New research in @nature.com concludes that burning trees and capturing the carbon doesn't give you any "negative emissions". Cutting down the forests actually means less CO2 absorbed. Confirms finding of previous NRDC study: www.nrdc.org/sites/defaul... www.theguardian.com/environment/...

There are many more land-efficient ways to produce #energy than growing #biofuels. Crops convert less than 1% of sunlight into biomass; #solarpanels convert around 20%. And using #electricity is more efficient than using liquid fuels: hannahritchie.substack.com/p/biofuels-v... #landuse #biomass

hannahritchie.substack.comWe could produce a lot of electricity on the land used for biofuelsAbout enough to meet current global electricity demand.

Burning wood pellets for power receives billions in subsidies, but according to scientists, it may not be clean energy. Companies like Drax are clear-cutting forests and trees for energy and harming communities in the process. www.forbes.com/sites/kensil...
