is the use of "strongly" (as an adverb) an A.I. artifact? or has it filtered into our student's writing via our current commander-in-chief? I'm seeing it a lot in papers I'm grading lately and I strongly dislike it.

If you’re some of the lucky few watching the re-release of Ken Russell’s “The Devils” this weekend, keep your ears peeled for a fantastic processional “Dies Irae” right near the beginning of the film.

Sally the Skelly is up and ready for a new haunted season…is it still August? Yes, but only for a few more days…and I have to start teaching soon, so here we go!

Consider me officially hyped for “Behemoth!” It’s directed by Tony Scott; it stars Pedro Pascal as a cellist working in Hollywood on a scouring stage; and it includes film music from 9 (!) different composers!

Dating back to July 15th, my scary movie viewing has sampled some franchises (Evil Dead, Resident Evil, and Saw — still in progress), and a bunch of old black and white classics. The standouts for me? A Korean filmmaker named Na Hong-jin (“Hope,” “The Wailing”) and the Zach Creggor “Resident Evil.”

This year I am attempting a Letterboxd challenge called Hooptober—named after Tobe Hooper—where in watch 31 horror films in 31 days drawn from a variety of categories. Happy October!! #hooptober13 #letterboxd

Going to see this tonight!

F.W. Murnau’s SUNRISE: A SONG OF TWO HUMANS is often, and deservedly, recognized as the supreme achievement of silent era cinema. For nearly one hundred years, critics, historians, scholars, and film lovers have recognized its artistry, emotion, and technical brilliance.

Thinking alot about Kendra Preston Leonard today as I taught silent film music earlier today; her fantastic curation and advocacy on silent film music was and is remarkable.

I voted this afternoon in the MA primary. Upon seeing that my wife had not yet voted, I meant to express surprise that I was at the polls before her, but what I actually said was… ”haha, I beat my wife” And then walked off to the voting booth. It’s a miracle they didn’t immediately call the cops

Yesterday: “The Odyssey” in 70mm IMAX Today: “Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma” Tomorrow: “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas” Sunday: “Coyote vs ACME” Holding onto the last fleeting nights of summer.

“Camp Miasma” is astonishing! As someone who loves slashers and Sunset Boulevard, this movie speaks to me on many levels. I wonder if Jane Schoenbrum ever sat through a lecture on Arcadelt’s “il bianco e dolce cigno” in college?? boxd.it/g4GvJJ

I regret to inform you that seeing "The Odyssey" in 70mm IMAX is a remarkable experience...not just the size, but the quality of the image is stunning. Don't you want to see Robert Pattinson's face 5 stories tall delivering the line reading of the year ("Can someone get these beggars out of here?")

Some of you know that “I haven’t prepped enough for the fall term” feeling at the end of summer, but do you have that “I agreed to play this 4-hand Mozart sonata with my son last spring and now we have our first lesson” angst? No? Just me?

I’m taking my son to see The Odyssey (his choice!) with three friends at an 11:30am showing. We are joined by a mostly blue-hair audience…should be interesting.

I love writing/teaching about the Dies Irae…it was a lot of fun crafting this primer on the melody I can’t stop hearing.

Announcing the first ever Guest Post on Review Roulette(!!) Please have a read of Alex Ludwig's (@celexo.bsky.social) absolutely fascinating piece "Hearing Death at the Movies" on the melody you know deep in your consciousness every time you hear it but might not be able to name: the "Dies Irae"

I regret to inform you that the infamous Raven’s Nest outcropping in Acadia (on the Schoodic side) is just as gorgeous as all the social media influencers want you to believe.

Woke up and realized I have started my annual Halloween tradition a little early! All of the Evil Dead franchise and I'll finish the Resident Evils today.

Just out of “Evil Dead Burn” and there’s so much to discuss, but mostly all I can think about is a jump cut from a head-on automobile crash to the inside of the club with a twerking backside full screen…it’s a choice

Of course, there’s a literal Chekhov’s Gun alongside Chekhov’s demented grandma, Chekhov’s handmade candelabra, Chekhov’s thousand-dollar pen, Chekhov’s headrest, and how can you forget Chekhov’s jump cut to a full-screen twerking backside

Also, I can’t believe I just saw a movie where someone thrusts weapons through a hole in the ceiling and a powerful woman shapes a man’s face into something demonic, but enough about “The Odyssey,” let’s talk about “Evil Dead Burn”! Boom goes the dynamite, in the words of @davechen.bsky.social
