The problem with caring about what people think is that most of them don't. What many people want from a social media experience is a fools' paradise. Make them build it themselves. AI-generated content is a violation of the Prime Directive.

What do you suppose happened to the topsoil they trucked away? Dumped into the ocean?
'Behind a wire fence lies a vast gaping wound of earth. Before Google’s arrival a few months ago, an estimated quarter of a million trees occupied the 330 hectares (815 acres) of forest near the town of Muhos in rural northern Finland. Now they are all gone.' www.theguardian.com/environment/...
You could replace 'The Telegraph' with the name of virtually any large business venture and the paragraph would remain plausible. Except that presumably the poster didn't work at all of them.
Long time ago now, I worked at The Telegraph - I worked alongside some absolutely amazing people. Those at the very top were as awful, incompetent, and promoted well above their ability level as you can imagine.
Because you're unaware of the hideously important ways in which the world has gotten worse? The constant threat of nuclear exchange during the Cold War looks like a quick and simple way for society to end in comparison.
The replies are an extraordinary catalogue of things that have objectively improved. If we didn't have the climate crisis and the far right authoritarians and the tech barons overshadowing everything I'd be whistling every day

“We don’t have a formal alliance, as far as I know, with Ukraine." I guess he's not aware of the 1994 Budapest Memorandum. Maybe that was before he was born.

The whole "Prosperity Gospel" has been repeatedly denounced as a heresy. Like you, I'm not a Christian, but obviously I can tell that the PG is a heretical teaching by Christian standards. Yet, its popularity has only increased with time.
I've read this sentence 4 times now and I still can't believe it. I mean, I'm not a Christian but I *was* raised Christian and if you believe empathy leads one AWAY from God, you're a heretic. What do they think "whatsoever you do to the least of my people, that you do unto me" actually means?
Empathy without reason IS dangerous. But of course reason itself leads society away from religion, as it makes all of its functions obsolete. Much as the Catholics forbid priests to marry to prevent them from trying to hand down their positions to sons, then kept the requirement long after...
@mandalorianwarri0r.bsky.social I don't think you're quite the master of literary communication that you imagine yourself to be, nor as skilled at comprending the full meaning of messages you read. Perhaps considering taking a step back and rethinking your morning would be wise.

No, the US needs a populace that will stand up for itself and refuse to use these services. But that's the rub: everyone knows that populace is incapable of restraining itself.
Step by step, day by day, Americans experience the big platforms becoming Orwellian political censors. The US needs a federal government that will tax them and break them up; the democratic world needs to learn the lesson and protect itself.
Heard BBC report about the fines for people playing music without headphones on the bus (although the announcer said it was for not using headphones, took me a moment to figure it out). Supposedly bus employees won't enforce because they're routinely threatened with violence. Meanwhile, in the US:

I'd find a largish piece of land with a natural spring on it and build a smallish cottage and a plant preservation farm. It's not just natural species that are in danger of extinction, lots of domesticated strains are at risk too. Lots of apples.
question for the audience: if you were ultra rich (let’s say $25M), what completely frivolous thing are you buying?

A Game Master's Guide to Poisons is going strong on @backerkit.com but could still use more backers. It's a rare project that's ready to fulfill almost immediately, and is a short (16-page) zine that covers poisons in fantasy rpgs: harvesting, synthesizing, selling, and generating new poisons!
If this were a healthy democracy, it wouldn't make the slightest bit of difference how many millions of dollars were spent on ads, because public opinion would be based on more than how many ads they've seen.
Elon Musk has just set a record that ought to alarm anyone who believes American democracy should be something more than a competition among billionaires. According to new analysis by The Washington Post based on filings made public yesterday, Musk has contributed $369
