I was just reading about the landmark interreligious meeting in Assisi forty years ago today — a red-letter day in JPII’s papacy — and this came up. Fooled me completely for a hot second. Not kidding.

As I've mentioned before, I have an idiosyncratic niche interest in border-crossing in the Middle Ages. This is a bit later but it's going on my list!

What if Tudor and Stuart England were told through the people moving across its borders rather than its kings and queens?

🕊️🌈 "Beyond mere memories, that day gave rise to what is known as the 'Spirit of Assisi' — a commitment by various religions to meet, engage in dialogue, and build peace together. It became a touchstone for the Church's magisterium — a gesture to be interpreted, refined, and developed."

The screen, Worcester Cathedral by Francis Skidmore, 1873. Few English Cathedrals feel as important as Worcester. In most countries it would be the most significant church building. This is one of the great medieval cathedrals of England, secure in its lovely city, imposing and full of confidence.

I've been saying for years — since well before ChatGPT — in my introductory talk on argumentation that there should probably be more virtue ethics in engineering. This is a great extension of that point.

St Cedd, brother of St Chad, whose feast is also today, in glass by William Lawson, 1930 at Salcott-cum-Virley, Essex. Like his brother he was a participant in the Synod of Whitby and evangelist to the East Saxons. He's the patron saint of the county of Essex.

Today's the feast of St Chad, 7th Century abbot and bishop in turn of both Northumbria and Mercia. He stands outside of Lichfield Cathedral, Staffordshire, where his shrine was until it was destroyed at the Reformation. His brother was St Cedd, evangelist to the East Saxons.

Trump supporters delight in Trump’s cruelty, of course, but they also engage in their own vile speech and actions as a virtual initiation rite into the MAGA movement — it’s the way that they demonstrate that they have the "courage" necessary to take on the left. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/25/o...
