The algorithm knows parents will do anything and buy anything for their baby. And selling moms on the “one perfect item” is all by design. @chabeli.bsky.social recently published a deep dive into this billion-dollar industry and is hosting a Reddit AMA all about it tomorrow! https://bit.ly/4dQbD8o

Raena Boston, a mom of 3, put it like this: "There is a market for people to prey upon that, to seize upon those anxieties and fears of, ‘Here, just buy this thing. You just need this product, and you’re gonna have an optimal kid.’”

We get into a lot more, including how the algorithm preys on new moms, how companies sell your data the moment you use a due date calculator & how they're racing to figure out you're pregnant before you've even told your family. We're really proud of this project. 19thnews.org/2026/09/moth...

The market for baby products exploded & has steadily grown since. The internet only intensified it. The mommy bloggers of the early 2000s used their relatability to push products that would help you figure it all out. Instagram birthed the curated, edited reboot of mommy bloggers — momfluencers

But we can’t just blame the internet. Nearly every industrialized nation developed a national paid leave policy that allowed parents to stay home for months with their infants, enough time to figure it out w/o relying so heavily on products. Every industrialized nation, but one: The U.S.

But when did parenting become like this? We got here, to this maximum-guilt stage of parenting, because of three big changes: 1. Dr. Spock 2. The Internet 3. America’s nonexistent paid parental leave policy

In 1946, pediatrician Dr. Benjamin Spock published “The Common Sense Book of Baby and Child Care,” a guide that encouraged parents to center children’s feelings. His advice was radical & his book sold more than 50M copies. It created a generation of nurturing parents — who spent money on their kids

Sarah Moeller was influenced to buy many items when she had her first daughter. Maybe the most outlandish: A vibrating paddle that slipped under the mattress to lull her baby to sleep. But rather than a gentle rocking, it shook the crib so violently that it tapdanced across her laminate floor.

Dr. Leah Rappaport, a Boston pediatrician, had her child while in her medical residency, and she found herself buying every major sleep product out there: the Snoo, the Taking Cara Babies course, the swaddles. “I was a pediatrician, and I was absolutely floored by having a child," she told me.

For this project we spoke to dozens of moms, experts & influencers about how we got to this mega-consumption era of parenthood. Parents today are less likely to be living near family, having kids later in life & having fewer of them. Most moms have just weeks with before they’re back at work.

“What’s the replacement for real, actual support? It’s things. It’s products," Ellen FitzGerald, a mom of two, told me. She said she'd find herself scrolling at night through Instagram, wondering if the solution to her son's sleep was just the right product. The algorithm knew she was struggling.
