MISTAKES IN FICTION DEPT: "And now I’ve made an error and there are eighteen-wheelers stopped ahead of me, eighteen-wheelers behind. And not for a great long while will I be released from the lineup for this weigh station." -From Why Did I Ever, entry number 25, by Mary Robison

MISTAKES IN FICTION DEPT: "“Just mistakes I make,” she says. “Like I left the kitchen thing burning again. On the what’s-it-called? Not the dashboard.” “The oven top. Coil stove. The burners,” I say. “But everybody does that. How long did you leave it on?” “Since the other night…" -Ibid., entry 36

@slotkin.senate.gov: you need to say “SPENDING IS GOOD, AND HERE’S WHY: FREE EDUCATION FOR EVERYBODY, HEALTHCARE, SCIENCE FOR THE FARMERS AND THE REST OF US, WHATEVER!" Own why democrats can govern, goddammit!

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Welker to Slotkin: "Democrats were in charge for four years. You were in Congress at the time. Why didn't Democrats do more to cut government spending when they were in charge?"

READING DEPT: PROUST I have decided to begin reading Proust again this year, and this time finish it. The elegant Penguin Modern Classics paperback editions, from the UK are expected to arrive on February 12. I am intimidated and excited in equal measure. I hope to recapture my focus.

READING DEPT: PROUST Only 70+ pages in and I need a break. I wonder if Proust is middlebrow, or for middlebrow readers to congratulate themselves for the stamina of getting through it…maybe something is lost in translation? I’ll come back, but my doubts are growing…maybe Proust isn’t for me?

MY CELEBRITY AUTOBIO DEPT: Chow Yun Fat at a screening of John Woo’s Hard Boiled, Divine on a NYC street. Asked for an autograph and got one. He was divine! Jerome Hellman, ditto autograph. Got a wave back from Tom Hiddleston on a NYC sidewalk.

MY CELEBRITY AUTOBIO DEPT: Told John C. Reilly he was AWESOME at a CA. Trader Joe’s. He recoiled. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Laura Linney and I once made significant eye contact on a NYC sidewalk. Her glance lingered on mine for an uncomfortable length of time. Mine too I guess.

This amounts to the most significant data leak in cyber history. Private individuals in the data business now have access to your Social Security information. This violates privacy laws in every state. Hopefully, state AGs will file suit & pursue criminal charges. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/01/u...

AI SNAFU DEPT: "Journalism" Fail The HAL 9000 is just running the show now, so STFU.

Tom Scocca@tomscocca.bsky.social

The AI madness is so far out of control that "Our product wrote a completely false news alert and credited a real news source" doesn't even rate a corporate comment, let alone an ashamed apology and pulling the product www.bbc.com/news/article...

WIKIPEDIA LITERARY LIVES: John D. Macdonald, Weight Loss: "Following his 1945 discharge from the army, MacDonald spent four months writing short stories, generating some 800,000 words and losing 20 pounds (9.1 kg) while typing 14 hours a day, seven days a week."

READING & BOOKS DEPT: Sometimes you just have to buy a book because it has this in it: J. G. Ballard and Bob Dylan traveling together to a Richard prince exhibit. My heart is full. I am done. Nothing can top this.
