Abraham Lincoln on the hypocrisy of Southern Christians supporting slavery. #quotes #history #abrahamlincoln #historyquotes #race #racism

"To read in the Bible , as the word of God himself, that ``In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread,[''] and to preach there-from that, ``In the sweat of other men's faces shalt thou eat bread,'' to my mind can scarcely be reconciled with honest sincerity." - Abraham Lincoln contra-slavery.

"The aftermath of the “fight fire with fire” method which you suggest is bitterness and chaos...Physical force can repress, restrain, coerce, destroy, but it cannot create and organize anything permanent; only love can do that. Yes love...is the solution to the race problem." Martin Luther King Jr.

"I am convinced that love is the most durable power in the world. It is not an expression of impractical idealism; but of practical realism...To return hate for hate does nothing but intensify the existence of evil in the universe...Love builds up and unites; hate tears down and destroys." -MLK Jr.

"The contemporary historian never writes such a true history as the historian of a later generation. It is a question of getting the true perspective, of seeing things in proportion." - Quotes on #history From The Mysterious Mr. Quin - Agatha Christie.

"Don’t send me any newspaper cuttings. I never believe a word said in the papers. The real history of a period (as we always discover a few years later) has very little to do with all that, and private people like you and me are never allowed to know it while it is going on." C.S. Lewis #history

"I don’t feel in a position to have clear opinions about anyone I know only from newspapers. You see, whenever they deal with anyone (or anything) I know myself, I find they’re always a mass of lies & misunderstandings: so I conclude they’re no better in the places where I don’t know." C.S. Lewis

Great quotes from history: "The best way of avenging thyself is not to become like the wrong-doer." - Marcus Aurelius, The Meditations.

"Nothing but the truth should be spoken about him [the President] or any one else. But it is even more important to tell the truth, pleasant or unpleasant, about him than about any one else." - Teddy Roosevelt, Great quotes of history, 2/2.

"To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public." - Teddy Roosevelt, Great quotes of history 1/2.
