It's Chatto!

ICYMI, Chatto is now Open Source and available for self-hosting. It's still early days, with Chatto currently sitting at 0.4, but it's a good version that we're happily using in production, so have at it! Here's our social media manager @hmans.dev with all the deets:

Chatto 0.5 Feature Preview: we've been giving the UI some subtle upgrades - among other things you can now configure how flat or 3D you want it to look (we've been told people prefer different things!)

Chatto 0.5 Feature Preview: Privileged Permission Activation! If you're hanging out on a server where you have privileged permissions (editing rooms, messages, accounts, bots, ...), you now have to arm them first. Arming permissions is logged and automatically deactivates after 15 minutes.

Chatto 0.5 Feature Preview: SEARCH! Finally! Chatto now supports pluggable search backends and ships with a simple built-in backend that will Just Work for servers of all sizes. Find messages through the search page, room sidebars, and the quick finder palette.

Chatto HQ community member freakynit is exploring an interactive 3D interface for Chatto servers. Fun!

Well, it's been a fun and exciting month! The community has grown significantly, a whole bunch of people are self-hosting, experimenting with bots, building alternative clients, providing hosting templates, and I even managed to squeeze in two weeks of vacation. Now it's back to work!

Meow! Some of you have been asking for email-less signups for your email-less friends. This is currently not supported natively by Chatto, but as a workaround, you can set up the excellent Pocket ID (which uses Passkeys) and wire it up to Chatto through OIDC. Instructions:

Random Chatto Light Mode appreciation post!

Pretty happy with the new stuff shipped to Chatto this week, especially the loading and UI responsiveness optimizations. Chatto was already pretty snappy to begin with, but now it's just sublime. Really enjoying being able to polish this thing now. Come join us in the official community!
