Possibly an oversimplification but probably also something to this.

I keep asking myself: “How did we get so mind numbingly stupid enough to elect people who would be fascists?” And it all comes back to education. We started teaching to the test, stopped teaching civics, stopped valuing the arts and independent thought. We started teaching people to be profitable.

With the sh!++y administration discouraging grad students/post docs from other countries, does this open up post doc positions for old fogies like me? Or does reduction of funding of science in general just offset that? 🧪 #chemsky #chemchat

Does anyone know more detail on this exposure? E.g., how it happened, how much was splashed onto the student? #chemsky #chemchat 🧪

Following a fatal accident involving hydrofluoric acid (HF), the city of Sapporo, Japan, has cited Hokkaido University for violations of Japan’s poisonous substances control act. One student died and two were injured in the Aug. 27 incident. #chemsky 🧪

I truly, deeply, sincerely do think the guy flipping burgers at McDonalds should be able to afford rent, bills, and groceries with his paycheck alone. That's kind of the whole point of having a job and I can't believe this is considered a radical position.🤷🏽‍♀️

Hard to avoid feeling much of this.

I question how “unpopular” these opinions really are. I would add that I hate how tech bros have used technology to *constantly* try to sell me things I don’t want. I’m always being hectored to either subscribe, upgrade, or purchase.

Let’s talk about Medicare for All. What would it mean for the individual American? ⬇ The day you’re born you get a card that gives you health insurance with no premium, co-pay, or deductible. Doesn’t matter if you get a job, lose a job, turn 26 or 65, get married or divorced — it's there for you.

Apple: ~$2.2 billion Nike: $986 million FedEx: ~$800 million Amazon: $640 million General Motors: $500 million Giant corporations are raking in millions in tariff refunds and getting even richer. But remember: corporations passed tariff costs on to you. Where's YOUR refund?

1. A transaminase can catalyze the reverse of a reaction catalyzed by a dehydrogenase. 2. Yet, either enzyme could be used to make Phe. Are both statements correct? If so, is it easier to use a transaminase or a dehydrogenase? (New w/enzymes here.) Thanks for any help/clarification! 🧪 #chemsky

I need some chemistry “safety questions” to ask my colleagues as part of our safety awareness. Anything. Can be deep/serious or simple/easy/trivial or a bit funny. I’ll give some examples I’ve recently used below. #chemsky 🧪

Looking for anyone who has done this as a large scale (>10 g) preparation of L-Glutamine. I can't get it to work well. (Yes I've scoured the literature and have considered the inhibitory feedback mechanisms and have varied all the variables I can, but continue to get poor yields.) #chemsky 🧪

When I was a kid and toothpaste tubes were metal (yes they were youngins!), we had little devices to scroll them up to get all the toothpaste out. Need that now. 🧪 #chemsky

Any prep-HPLC experts? I must isolate 20-40 g of a fatty acid ester by HPLC. RP column. So, many injections. I can make solutions that are 1 g material in 4 mL mobile phase. Is this a crazy (e.g., bad) concentration to use? It does *seem* to be working. 🧪 #chemsky

In 2 days, a scientist wrote a whole paper and it was accepted. That was back in 2020. By now I assume you just feed in some data and AI converts it to a paper and minutes later it’s accepted by AI editors. 🧪

If there exists a 6-month to 1-year PhD level position in synthetic organic chemistry in the Seattle area, please let me know! (Yeah I know the odds are low.) Why this picture? I don’t know - but I can do chemistry! 🧪 #chemsky
