Open Postdoc (80%) in our Lab @uzh-ch.bsky.social (PI: Klaus Oberauer) Topics are: Working memory, long-term memory, attention; experiments, individual differences, computational modeling. Start Dec 2026 to Feb 2027, until June 2030. Apply by Oct 15; Questions to: k.oberauer@psychologie.uzh.ch

Do maintenance and processing compete for a shared resource in working memory? In our new preprint, we use three experiments to show that they are more independent than commonly assumed. The observed trade-off arose mainly when processing required additional information to be encoded:

Is There a Trade-Off Between Processing and Maintenance of Information in Working Memory?: https://osf.io/cd4jv

More specifically, increasing processing demand alone did not impair memory. Memory declined primarily when processing introduced a changing reference object that had to be encoded. Meanwhile, increasing memory load did not progressively reduce processing accuracy or slow response times.

Tired of relying on accuracy & RT to study individual differences? Cognitive models go beyond task performance to estimate the cognitive processes driving behavior. We bring cognitive models to individual-differences research — with practical guidance on study design and data analysis.

🚨New paper🚨 I’m exited to share that our (@joschadutli.bsky.social, K. Oberauer, @leabartsch.bsky.social) work on the link between grouping of information in #workingmemory and the formation of chunks in #longtermmeory has just been published in Cognition! 🥳 www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

sciencedirect.comGrouping in working memory guides chunk formation in long-term memory: Evidence from the Hebb effectThe Hebb effect refers to the improvement in immediate memory performance on a repeated list compared to unrepeated lists. That is, participants creat…

Happy to share a new preprint with @joschadutli.bsky.social, K. Oberauer, and @leabartsch.bsky.social! We investigated the flexibility of chunk formation in (partially) repeated sequences and show how chunk formation in #longtermmemory can be driven by how information is structured in #workingmemory
