Chicago's Regional NARA facility is on the chopping block, too! Here's looking to you @ilattygeneral.bsky.social @kwameraoul.bsky.social to help stop the closure of the Great Lakes Region NARA Facility in Chicago! CAA will be out on Federal Plaza to help raise awareness.

JANM is pleased that AG Bonta stepped up to take action to stop the closure of the NARA’s San Bruno facility and we urge NARA to continue to preserve the documents that tell our nation’s past as well as make these invaluable records accessible to the American public! asamnews.com/2026/10/15/c...

"Tribal leaders said many of them only learned of the planned National Archives closures through media reports. Federal archivists have now scheduled two virtual meetings with tribal nations this week following public outcry."

Public News Service@publicnewsservice.bsky.social

Three National Archives facilities (Chicago, San Francisco and Seattle) are slated to close, and it's unclear where hundreds of thousands of nondigitized records will go. Tribal leaders say that includes enrollment and boarding school records families rely on. #NationalArchives #IndigenousHistory

Call to action this week!

Chicago Area Archivists@chicagoarchivists.bsky.social

Join us in protesting the closure of the Chicago NARA branch. We’ll be at the Federal Plaza (on the N side) from 11am-1pm M-F from Oct 12-16th, and we encourage you to come by and show your support! If you are able, please RSVP on our website. If you can only make one day, shoot for Friday.

Please be concerned about the lack of communication regarding the closure of the National Archives at Chicago. We think this notice went up yesterday for the move of a collection in just two weeks. NARA is only just now holding Tribal Consultations too.

Listen to the original City Council meeting in December 2008 over the sale of the parking meters courtesy of member Office of the City Clerk: archive.org/details/chic...

BREAKING: A deal has been reached that will allow Chicago’s parking meters to be sold to a New York-based investment firm, which has agreed to sell an airline that has been carrying out deportations for the Trump administration, 5 Chicago City Council members announced Tuesday. @wttw.bsky.social

This is a must watch, laying out what's at stake. And we call bullshit on this statement "These closures address the growing volume of underutilized space resulting from the federal government's transition to electronic recordkeeping." A fraction of the materials are digitized.

Listen to every single word about the gutting of the National Archives #nara #nationalarchives

14 Aug 2026 What does the decreasing National Archives budget really mean? I would relish the opportunity to hear an explanation from @nathanjun.bsky.social #genealogy #nara #nationalarchives

The Bud Billiken parade was last Saturday, a signal that summer's over and it's back to school. We love this image from member UIC with Truman, Sengstacke (Defender publisher, sponsor of the parade) and RJD. 70 years ago!

A powerful statement asking all the important questions from the United International Indigenous Nations. Thanks @formidablegen.bsky.social!

The United International Indigenous Nations has issued a Statement of Solidarity and Formal Inquiry regarding the planned closure of the National Archives at Chicago and the possible relocation of its Bureau of Indian Affairs records. Please read it and share it. #genealogy #nara #nationalarchives

I oppose the closing of the National Archives facility in Chicago. The lack of transparency surrounding this decision has only deepened the loss it would represent for researchers, historians, dedicated employees, and our community. I urge the National Archives to reconsider this decision.

As always @robertloerzel.bsky.social understands the implications of loss of access to historical materials. Thanks, Robert!

At a time when dubious information runs rampant, we need more — not less — access to our history.
