#31NightsofHorror Day 26 - The Witch (2018). Promises horror, delivers Nikita with superpowers. Misleading title but a good watch nonetheless. Looking forward to this Terminator badass schoolgirl tearing through people in part 2, but it’ll have to wait till November. #filmsky

#31NightsofHorror Day 25 - Malignant (2021). Oddly paced, unevenly genre-d horror that is enjoyable for great stretches. Then you hit the final act… No spoilers, but the movie is crazy fun for the last 30 mins. Needed to take itself way less seriously considering the twist ending! #filmsky

#31NightsofHorror Day 24 - Scream (1996). Slasher films were in a bad place in the 90’s when this meta masterpiece gave the genre a whole new lease of death. Jamie Kennedy & Matthew Lillard have a blast and Neve Campbell is perfect as the new final girl. Comedy horror never had it so good. #filmsky

#31NightsofHorror Day 23 - Pandemonium (2023). Starts like Waiting for Godot, transitions into first vignette with a fantastic child actor - can’t imagine her not becoming a future star. The rest of the film is well made but utterly depressing, devoid of the humour that made this promising. #filmsky

Death by plane not good enough for ya? Death by witch more your thing? A dad’s film perhaps with a touch of Sorceror? Or a sociopath with his arm in a sling? #lastfourwatched #Letterboxd #LetterboxdFriday #Filmsky

#31NightsofHorror Day 22 - The Vanishing (1988). The film that terrified Stanley Kubrick. Not a particularly scary movie, but it does contain a terrifying conceit. Fantastic creepy antagonist, just a great film all around. Avoid the dismal Jeff Bridges remake with its Hollywood bullshit. #filmsky

2026 watch #189 - The Weight (2026). Terrible title for a taut little thriller. Take Sorcerer, sprinkle in some Revenant, a soupçon of Deliverance & just a whiff of City Slickers 😅 Great script, great cast & a decent story. Dad movie? Sure. But a far cry from the straight-to-streamer dross. #filmsky

#31NightsofHorror Day 21 - Suspiria (1977). Red and green splashed on every surface, it could be a Christmas film. Heavy smoker on the soundtrack going la la la, some ropey acting, this sometimes feels like an earnest student effort. Definitely overhyped, still curious about the remake. #filmsky

#31NightsofHorror Day 20 - Final Destination (2000). High concept idea from X-Files script that kicks off a great franchise where the rest of the films often struggle to compete with the opening scenes. Like Bond films. Seann William Scott inspired cast member - never thought I’d say that! #filmsky

#31NightsofHorror Day 19 - The Hitcher II - The original is a favourite. I've seen the meh remake but I don't think I've ever seen the sequel. How I wish that were still the case. This is a disaster, from the heavy-handed score to C Thomas Howell trying to act with PTSD. Avoid, if you can. #filmsky

#31NightsofHorror Day 18 - Evil Dead 2 (1987). “Work shed.” It’s goofy, it’s groovy, it’s laugh out loud, gory and proud. Evil Dead scared the shit out of me as a kid, but this one I dig. A constant rewatch, but it’s been too long since the last time I visited the cabin in the woods. #filmsky

#31NightsofHorror Day 17 - Lake Placid. “We wanted to call it Lake Placid, but someone said the name was taken. “ Jaws plus comedy horror of Arachnophobia. A silly script is saved by an excellent cast, including early Brendan Gleeson, Bill Pullman, Betty White, Oliver Platt & Bridget Fonda. #filmsky

#31NightsofHorror Day 16 - Angel Dust (1994). A psychological profiler hunts for a subway killer. Compared with Silence of the Lambs, and it has its moments, but no chance. Suspect a PhD in Psychology might have helped get a better handle on this one. #filmsky

#31NightsofHorror Day 15 - Audition (1999). “Kiri kiri kiri kiri kiri.” Boy auditions girl, girl has issues, boy isn’t really a boy and some would say gets his just desserts. With only light seeding of the themes, the final act is so shocking it had wiped the rest of the movie from memory. #filmsky

A beauty beyond com-Beart A movie that’s barely there Three slasher movies in one Utterly bonkers from Nippon #lastfourwatched #Letterboxd #LetterboxdFriday #Filmsky

#31NightsofHorror Day 14 - House (1977). “Bananas, bananas, bananas!” A group of girls visit a strange house in the countryside owned by a lonely old woman. And when I say strange… It’s one of those films that looks like it was equally fun to make. Bonkers, in a good way. Currently on BFI. #filmsky

#31NightsofHorror Day 13 - The Dead Don't Die (2019). Not a fan 1st time of watching so gave it another go as I don’t trust I didn’t like a Jarmusch joint. Also since I watched & loved Night of the Living Dead for the first time, it felt right. I was wrong, for the most part it’s a fun time #filmsky

#31NightsofHorror Day 12 - Martyrs (2008). Absolute polar opposite of what I just watched, a suicidal director working through grief & anxiety for a doomed world to justify showing extreme, stomach-turning human torture of young women. Forwarded through this one, not my cup of tea at all #filmsky

2026 #31NightsofHorror Day 11 - Twilight (1990). Not that Twilight, this one’s a “haunting” Hungarian black & white endurance test of a film. Disorienting, plays at a snails pace, so that there are really only three or four scenes in the whole film… and still it’s better than Twilight 2008. #filmsky

2026 watch #177 - Digger (2026). Brilliant. Shit. Then brilliant again. I knew Cruise could act, just haven’t seen it for awhile. Amazing cast, they all get a monologue, incredible set design, it just got a little too meta to fully click. Dr. Strangelove meets Synecdoche New York meets Tom! #filmsky

#Digger as of Oct 10th is .4 points higher than The Final Reckoning. Because it’s better than The Final Reckoning. It’s not a film you easily forget. Which is a good thing these days.

2026 #31NightsofHorror Day 10 - L’enfer (aka Hell, aka Torment) 1994. Hitchcockian thriller - a hotel owner marries an exceptional beauty and can’t control his jealous impulses. As his mind races, he gets more and more violent. Business suffers, the relationship hangs by a thread…

2026 watch #185 - Animals (2026). When it comes down to it, John Gray is right: humans are animals with delusions of grandeur. “Aggressively mid” is how my kid described this Affleck spin on Kurosawa’s High and Low with a kompromat edge. But the final scenes are fairly intense… if you get that far.

2026 #31NightsofHorror Day 9 - Dr. Terror’s House of Horrors (1965). Never has a title and cast promised so much, delivered so little: an unseen werewolf, a killer weed, a voodoo beat, a possessed hand - promising - and a vampire. A poor man’s Tales of the Unexpected, it’s not even camp! #filmsky

2026 watch #183 - Kung Fu Hustle (2004). This is such a good time, I catch some of it whenever it’s on but haven’t sat down to watch the whole thing for a while. Great kung fu, jokes that land, special fx that for the most part hold up, and a fine cast of crazy characters. #filmsky

31 Nights of Horror begins Paying homage to Evil Dead’s Ash Then the sound of gore Some del Toro lore And a video game movie with bodies that splash #lastfourwatched #Letterboxd #LetterboxdFriday #Filmsky

2026 #31NightsofHorror Day 8 - Resident Evil (2026). The best Resident Evil movie, but that wasn’t a big crashed car to hurdle. Has fun with the video game-ness of it all, but when it could be creepy it gets bogged down in bad dialogue. Was PWHauser paid by the word? Last act mostly a mess. #filmsky

2026 #31NightsofHorror Day 7 - Crimson Peak (2013). All atmosphere, all audience one step ahead of the mystery the whole time. Gothic Dracula meets The Sixth Sense, but when you see dead people in a Guillermo del Toro film you expect to see things from their side of the equation. #filmsky

2026 #31NightsofHorror Day 6 - Berberian Sound Studio (2012). “Sounds a little watery, any fresh marrow?” Soft spoken Gideroy is employed by an Italian studio to work as expert foley artist for a horror movie. Exquisite sound design - how could it not be - but does much else happen? Nope. #filmsky

2026 #31NightsofHorror Day 5 - Idle Hands (1999). “[911] there’s something wrong with my friend, I think he took nutmeg or something.” Evil Dead’s evil hand in Halloween’s Pasadena. Film starts fast and loose and funny… but runs out of steam helmed by an uninventive director. #filmsky

2026 #31NightsofHorror Day 4 - The Thing (1982). Memorable for the incredible special effects by Rob Bottin, who apprenticed under Rick Baker. Stan Winston also had a role as there were so many creature effects needed. Russell & Carpenter’s 3rd collaboration after Elvis and Escape from NY. #filmsky

2026 #31NightsofHorror Day 3 - The Devil’s Mouth (2026). “There’s so much blood.” “Like bleeding?” There’s a lot of terrible dialogue in this film & White Lotus’ Tayme deserves so much better. 40 mins of Gen Z toxic quips before anything happens. Kathryn Newton needs to fly the pigeon hole. #filmsky

It’s Jessie’s turn to shine The killer’s face was the sign Samara turns rage to art Samara’s blood soaks are off the chart #lastfourwatched #Letterboxd #LetterboxdFriday #Filmsky

2026 watch #175 - Ready or Not 2: Here I Come (2026). The first was a romp, the sequel adds more plot armour than you can take a bloody stick at. Still quite a bit of fun, and always good to see Elijah Wood in something. #31NightsofHorror

2026 watch #173 - Perfect Blue (1997). A near-perfect anime: a pop idol wants to become an actress and is made to debase herself and begins to lose her identity. Meanwhile there is or isn’t a killer on the loose, complicated by the fact that she’s acting in a psychological thriller. #filmsky

2026 watch #172 - Toy Story 5 - No physical media window means Toy Story 5 is already on Disney+ 3 months from release. The trilogy was a perfectly good time to stop, but like Forky from 4, there is a good reason to watch 5: Smarty Pants, the potty-training device voiced by Conan O'Brien. #filmsky

2026 watch #171 - The Purge: Anarchy (2014). John Carpenter Assault on Precinct 13-inspired sequel, expanding the purge sandbox that everyone seemed to crave. It’s fine for what it is. Frank Grillo is the stand out- he could be in so many better movies if given half a chance. #filmsky

2026 watch #170 - Mother (2009). Bong Joon Ho’s themes and motifs are all here as a mother fights for her son accused of murder: society’s underbelly, incompetent authority figures & of course the darkest comedy. Not as slick as Parasite, not as interesting as Memories of Murder, still good #filmsky

2026 watch #169 - Enemy (2013). A man discovers he has a doppelgänger and that his doppelgänger is not a good guy. Psychological drama with a Fight Club / Ballard vibe, set in a bleached out concrete Toronto. #filmsky

We don’t produce sketch show writers in the UK. Actors are great, sketches are poor, writing room is small and packed with people who have little experience in TV sketch comedy. It’s not a stretch - hire some Americans who do have experience if we want #SNLUK to survive?

2026 watch #168 - The Sweet Hereafter (1997). Every parent’s nightmare comes true for a whole pied piper’s worth of townsfolk in a harrowing Russell Banks adaptation. Why aren’t more of his books made into films? Probably because we just couldn’t take the agony he inflicts on his characters #filmsky

Kusturica’s cartoon cast What a Carve Up Carry On Wandering the city, remembering the past A five star twisting, erotic con #lastfourwatched #Letterboxd #LetterboxdFriday #Filmsky

2026 watch #166 - Adrift in Tokyo (2007). Take a stroll through Tokyo in Autumn, with a carefree student who can’t find his feet and a melancholic yankii who’s getting out of the loan shark business through which they collide. Think Into the Miso Soup, without the serial killing aspects! #filmsky

2026 watch #165 -What a Carve Up! (1961). Bumbling Ernie and his best friend Sid attend the reading of a will in a spooky old house. Between Carry On Regardless & Carry On Cruising Sid James and Kenneth Connor made this delightful comedy horror. Less double entendres, more Donald Pleasance. #filmsky
