@gruber.foo re: users of apps like Widgetsmith not being iPhone e series customers. Checks out. I don’t know anyone who’s bought one for themselves, but I know a lot of people who carry a second phone provided by their employer (big corporate and gov) and they’re all coming up 17e these days.

I work in state gov and we are basically buying them by the truckload these days, and I’m seeing the same at the big corporations we contract and partner with.

W/ MDM users can’t install whatever they want, so you’re not getting stuff like Widgetsmith and whatnot. But there are a lot of these phones out there at least in my corner.

Is Coyote vs. Acme the best movie you’ve seen this year or is it the best movie you’ve seen in your entire life? Because you have seen it, right?

I don’t know who else is listening to this Parts & Labor album Set of All Sets but I think it’s the best thing they’ve ever done. I just can’t stop listening to it, esp on a run. It doesn’t really sound like music from a Bill and Ted movie, but “most triumphant” is the only way to describe it.

Listen to Andres Cantor’s call of the last ~25 minutes of the Argentina-England semifinal (including handshakes after the whistle). Such a pleasure to witness someone be so good at something and love it so much. It might not hit the same if you don’t speak Spanish, but I bet it at least sorta does.

Having the World Cup in the US just feels wrong because as an American it is my birthright to watch soccer at odd hours when I’m supposed to asleep and/or at work, and never during the evening prime time hours.

New paradox just dropped: Organization Without a Cool Acronym and Organization With a Cool Acronym are both OWCA. Hinges on the age old question: is OWCA a cool acronym? Maj Monogram clearly thinks it’s not, but can he be so sure?

OG really has some Starks in him. Love it when a guy just goes at Wemby. Either you make a great play or he does. Really helps if you as strong OG is of course. Makes for good basketball.

I need a wheel barrow, so I put it in my stuff to buy list in the iOS to do app. The list is labeled a “Groceries” list per Apple’s convention, because that’s most of what I usually need to buy. The app helpfully suggests moving the wheel barrow to the breads and cereals section.

Kinda wanna get a haircut, but that feels like committing to haircuts for the rest of my life, and I’m not into that. Sorta getting sick of the long hair though.

This is how he’s always operated. He’d rather live in a world where the entire economy is worth a hundred dollars and he has ninety nine of them than one where it’s worth ten thousand but he has two thousand. Rich isn’t good enough, it’s more important to be more rich than more people.

Not content to have notched 6 business bankruptcies, trump is now trying to bankrupt the world. -Vietnam, Cambodia, and the Philippines are rationing fuel and closing gas stations. The Philippines has declared an energy emergency. -Japan/South Korea/Taiwan: Implementing energy conservation.

You know what ruled was when the “Two of Us” sync dropped in Projects Hail Mary. Is that my favorite Beatles song? Maybe. Deep emotions.

5 jobs I’ve had: 1) bureaucratic fatcat 2) heavy stuff carrier 3) forklift operator 4) trees and shrubs guy 5) library page

Sometimes you listen to an album you haven’t listened to in years and you don’t remember that you really listened to it that much back in the day but it turns out you know it like the back of your hand and it’s like an old friend and it’s even better than you remember. Re: The Format - Dog Problems

Ever lie in bed and night and wonder, for example, am I closing my mouth wrong? Is my tongue supposed to be touching the roof of my mouth? Why can’t I put my teeth together without clenching my jaw? When was the last time I took a breath? Isn’t breathing supposed to be involuntary?

Why to I have to think about it to take a breath right now? And I always this way? Oh well now it’s 4:30 am might as well get up and go for a bike ride

Let’s do a deep dive on Guided by Voices album titles. “Bee Thousand” is obviously a great one and a classic joke on a Beethoven misspelling, and GbV titles have always been good, but I’d argue they didn’t really hit their stride till the 2012 comeback.

Communication is what makes us special; we can influence one another’s thoughts and feelings with words even they don’t mean anything in any traditional sort of way. GbV album titles are like dog barks. Varied like the colors of leaves or butterflies, similar like the grains of sand at the beach.

Anyway, this TED talk brought to you by the title “Tremblers by Goggles and Rank” which has been bouncing around in my brain for 3 years and which I cannot get out.

And since then, they haven’t gone more than a few consecutive releases without at least one real memorable one in there. You can’t really shake a stick at a title like Welshpool Frillies, Sweating the Plague, or August by Cake.

These are great turns of phrase that mean a lot because the of way the sound and the space they take up in your brain. Or mine at least. And I suspect Robert Pollard’s. Examples of the utility of language, and of both the evolutionary dominance of the human species as well as our animal nature.

Let’s Go Eat the Factory kicked off a strong 5-LP run, with Class Clown Spots a UFO, The Bears for Lunch, and Motivational Jumpsuit all being among Pollard’s strongest work.

The best version of “Streets of Baltimore” is the Bobby Bare one, even if I came to know the song via Evan Dando’s cover and Gram Parsons who is one of my faves did it.

Stores are selling all sorts of weird freeze dried candy like skittles and starbursts but what I want are the ropes of skittles or sour patch kids or peanut butter cups that come out of the hydraulic press on the hydraulic press channel on instagram. Somebody sell that stuff.

Here’s the thing about guys like Trump and Elon: they’d rather be in a world where there’s a hundred dollars to go round and they have ninety nine of them than be in a world where there’s a thousand dollars to go around and they have five hundred of them.

Spent last week in Minnesota and listened to The Loon by Tapes ‘n Tapes on the flight in the state’s honor. Good record. Holds up. Listened to some other MN stuff too that also holds up but nobody’s forgetting about those bands.

@stevenhyden.bsky.social Spent my Presidents’ Day sitting on my back patio listening to MJ Lenderman, Taper’s Choice, and Sturgill Simpson shows real loud on Nugs.net. I know the weather’s not ready for that where you are, but if you ever come to Phoenix in the winter, lemme know.

Destroyer’s ouvre is nuts. 3 pretty distinct eras of getting a little more famous each time, and each one effectively erasing what came before. No one talks about Rubies or Streethawk much anymore. In the modern convo the band may as well start w/ Kaputt. And I get it, Kaputt was era defining

But, like, have people listened to Streethawk: A Seduction recently? It was one of my fave records 20+ years ago and I come back to it a lot. Still incredible. And Your Blues? Trouble in Dreams, Rubies? This effing Night? Incredible records all. And don’t get me started on how good ken is,

And ken seems to be the least well regarded post-Kaputt Destroyer album, but “In The Morning”, “Tinseltown…,” and “Cover…” in sequence? It’s a great record! Anyway I’m pretty stoked for Dan’s Boogie.

Mitski’s best song still. One of the best songs of its year, decade, century etc. That she hasn’t topped it or come close is not a slight against what she’s done since. This song is just on another level. In another universe. In another timeline.

Mitski - "Your Best American Girl" (2016)

Mk.gee’s songs all sound really good—great drums, guitar work, etc. but I never remember the songs at all afterward. They’re just there. All vibes. And I like vibes, esp these vibes. But it just seems background music. “Breakthespell” is a pretty good “Sweet Jane” interpolation though.

The new Ringer website is just awful. There’s such a thing as too much information density, but there reverse is also true. I can scroll up and down, or let the tiles scroll but by the time I’m ready to click on a story (which I can only see 3 or 4 of) it’s auto side scrolling to the next topic. 👎🏼👎🏼👎🏼

How is it possible that Emiliano Martinez both one of the best goalkeepers in the world and also one of the absolute worst, most absent-minded professional athletes on the planet?

You are up to date.
