Anyway, this critique of Liz Truss was brought to you by the 'I don't wanna write a proposal' side of my brain. Have a good one!

If you want to sell a book it helps to pretend know your thesis. Truss had a decent one, that her downfall exposed a flaw in how the post-crash system ties government hands But turns out “the deep state is out to get you, vote MAGA” is better for YouTube clicks, or maybe she really does believe it

'I totally fucked up but don't think unaccountable bodies should be able to control monetary policy' would be fair talking point. 'Unaccountable bodies shouldn't be able to control monetary policy; I, and only I, was prepared to uncover the plot so the deep-state toppled me & the government' isn't

The sad fact is that underneath the iron clad hubris hide some actually good points about institutional capture that get totally drowned out by the mouth-foaming conspiracy theories

Looking at the small print, Harry Kane now has to join #NUFC like the last two English #BallonDor winners.

Liz Truss is mad as a bag of spiders

If I were Eddie Howe I'd treat a job at Man U like the plague. Happy to see them down there, but feel heartily sorry for Carrick. Same player issues as Moyes faced. Totally umanagable group of players #nufc

Pity the poor passengers on Emirates flight from Dubai to Newcastle. Watched them do 3 passes from the coast. Currently attempting #4 🪽😬😬😬

Watching the 7 up series back to back before watching the last one, and - ethical issues aside - it's terrific in so many ways. But love the way that as the episodes go on we get longer vignettes of the lives and sociocultural contexts. You'd never get this made now.

1/ This is what I mean by structurally disabling. It’s insidious & not malicious, but it makes people navigating #ADHD and #AuDHD feel gaslit. I’ve just spent an hour trying to navigate my son’s EHCP form

4/ And when you have to go and ask for an accessible version of what’s quite a simple form, double consciousness kicks in. You feel foolish & start doubting your own ability to function in the world, when the problem was the design all along.

5/ Accessibility isn’t only screen readers and mobile layouts. It’s also how different brains take in information. A form about neurodivergent needs should *start* there.

2/ 12 open-ended questions spread over 5 pages of a Microsoft Form. No accessibility options. No way to print, so no way to see the questions together and think them through before answering. It’s literally a form about disability needs.

3/ The issue isn’t that it’s unsolvable. I’m a grown-up, I’ll find a way through. My son will find this much harder. But the real issue is what it implicitly says: we don’t take accessibility seriously. Whether that’s true or not. More likely it's saving time on admin

Cautious optimism returning about #nufc V young squad essentially rebuilt from ground up with only 7 games together & almost no preseason (again). New manager with new ideas & needs time to see what works/doesn't work. This should mitigate headloss at least until Jan imo

What we also can't do is get Spursy and start sacking managers if they don't perform after 6 months - cos THAT's the way to relegation. Said the same thing about EH. It might take a season to turn this ship around

just spent 2 hours revisiting my goals & ideals for life. It's something I did about 6 years ago & it led to moving back to the toon & a lot of good things inc. doing a PhD. You forget, while paddling like mad under the water, that doing the things that matter to you takes actual thought & planning

sounds like proper influencer bantz, I know, but it's also a lovely process working through a vision from family, to work, to better relationships, to what your ideal weekend looks like etc. Won't all come true, for sure, but feels good to reconnect with what you value most in life.

watched Jimmy McGovern's 'Time' last night. Extraordinary, incredibly hard to watch, a psychological horror series for anyone with kids who have differences in cognition.

11. But the economics are clear, allowing people to continue to suffer without treatment and support is expensive and unconscionable. According to NHS England, not treating ADHD costs the UK economy ~£17 billion in lost tax, benefits, unemployment, health/social care/justice costs

12. So if its not economics, its something else. It’s a form of politics that would rather deny difference than build ramps to equality. Keeping the gates barred is the real harm, not labels

9. Neurodivergent people who hack the gates and succeed differently, undermine the authority of those who guard orthodox ways of learning and succeeding. “How dare you challenge our house now we’ve let you in.”

10. Making it a private, medical, individualised problem by introducing shame (just like Mark Fisher framed the way we treat mental illness) deflects from a social critique of disabling structures like schools and institutions. it’s easier to say “fix yourself” than “the system is harming people.”

7. Here's what makes certain people uneasy: To accept reality of ADHD is to accept the system itself is disabling, which means the structures must change, & that threatens those who benefit most from them. Easier to deny ADHD than to accept structural change

8. Accepting ADHD means admitting the level playing field was never level, that success wasn’t pure merit, that the game was rigged toward a narrow frame of cognition. That’s threatening to people who believe they succeeded “on merit”

5. I was that kid. Barred from sixth form, shamed, bullied, leant into booze & drugs instead. Not having a label didn't protect me. It just left me adrift - for a decade.

6. ADHD has both medical and social aspects to it - what it *doesn't* mean kids can't learn, aren't bright enough to succeed, or are doomed to be left behind. It's just a different operating system that struggles against structures designed for neurotypical kids.

3. ~5% of children and 2-3% of adults have ADHD. Far fewer are diagnosed or helped. The UK has lower recognition rates than comparable European countries. The “epidemic” is a myth; the reality is people still being missed

4. “labels damage kids” compared to what? The report found undiagnosed ADHD links to school exclusion, unemployment, criminal justice involvement, self-harm, suicide. *Being missed and unsupported* is the harm

2. It shouldn't need restating, but a waiting list doesn’t mean too many people have #ADHD. It means huge numbers who were missed for decades are finally seeking answers. That’s not overdiagnosis. It’s the backlog of a lifetime of under-diagnosis

Telling that Wes Streeting considers someone diagnosed with ADHD has been 'written off'. Also telling that the government commissioned a review in the face of independent reviews finding there is no overdiagnosis, just increased awareness & historic underdiagnosis of girls & women.

How it is prioritised and paid for is key. But also campaigners need to hammer home the cost of the status quo. An estimated 30% of male offenders have ADHD. Late diagnosis leads to ~30% school drop out rate. 100x greater risk of exclusion. What's the economic impact of not fixing this?

Ben Newmark@bennewmark.bsky.social

Seeing news about NHS crisis due to ADHD and ASD diagnosis and can't help thinking we aren't facing some basic economic facts. Systems, education, health, social care simply aren't set up to deal with the surge in demand. Any plans to deal with meeting this need to also be plans for how we pay..

I really wish we could just have honest, evidence based politics, where somebody stands up and says "the most plausable reason more people are diagnosed with Autism/ADHD now is because it's become de-stigmatized and we understand it better". Instead of this shit.

Widow's Bay just topped my favourite shows list. Seriously good stuff by Katie Dippold - all my favourite horror tropes folded into a hilarious sitcom and it's a joy to behold
