**4th HALLOWEEN SALE ANNOUNCEMENT! ** Next up is an upgrade of a DVD from the early days of Mondo Macabro, one that’s been out of print for many years now - an un-nerving 90s American indie film take on Filipino folk-horror, ASWANG aka THE UNEARTHING!

In light of the ten year anniversary of Mickey Keating's DARLING, I republished a print interview I conducted with Lauren Ashley Carter for VideoScope Magazine back in 2018. This was at the height of the #metoo movement and Carter's activist spirit blazed. chrishallock.substack.com/p/interview-...

Honored to contribute an essay to Refuse Film’s Blu-Ray release of Nathan Tape’s raunchy but heartfelt Juggalo road thriller/dark comedy OFF RAMP, part of a bundle that includes ROCK N ROLL FRANKENSTEIN and CAT SICK BLUES www.refusefilms.com/products/ref...

Caught an absolutely pristine 35mm print of SCANNERS last night at the Cinémathèque québécoise (from their collection). Not a single scratch on it! I also REALLY love Howard Shore’s score for this film!

Here's an interview I did back in 2018 with composer Jeff Grace (Stake Land, Meek's Cutoff, The Last Winter) for VideoScope Magazine. We discussed his early life and career and his extraordinary work for Glass Eye Pix. open.substack.com/pub/chrishal...

After absorbing @horrornonna.com keen insights in Alexandre O. Philippe’s extraordinary documentary CHAIN REACTIONS, I’m seeing hellmouths everywhere!

Yes, we do.

I posted an article I wrote for a print edition of Paracinema back in 2013, a retrospective of David Patrick Kelly’s best villainous roles. open.substack.com/pub/chrishal...

🚨🚨🚨🚨Ahhhh! It’s happening !!! I have waited a long time for this moment. I’m so thrilled to share that my debut crime thriller, FIRST CHANCE, will be available in stores September 2026!! Thank you @daniel_ehrenhaft @blackstonepublishing & @lejeunebecky for your enthusiasm and support.

I wrote a bit about one of my favorite (and much maligned) 80s action films BAND OF THE HAND, which harnesses the stylistic goodness of its producer Michael Mann. open.substack.com/pub/chrishal...

Now It’s Your Turn to Tell Me Stories Here's something a little different from the genre-focused writing I usually do, from a paper I wrote about Canada's most important Indigenous filmmaker, the trailblazing ALANIS OBOMSAWIN, and her varied work featuring children. open.substack.com/pub/chrishal...

I've never been part of a world that didn't shine with amazing women. I happily stand, climb, run, create, laugh, fist bump, and soar with you all on this day and every day! Happy International Women's Day!

I wrote quite a bit about female relationships and queer desire in the monstrous imaginary of Brazilian werewolf fairy tale GOOD MANNERS/AS BOAS MANEIRAS: chrishallock.substack.com/p/of-lust-lo...

My first Substack post is live, a lively interview I did with Larry Fessenden back in 2009 for a now defunct online publication. open.substack.com/pub/chrishal...

I signed up for Substack to collect some previously published online work that no longer exists on the internet. I have an archived interview with LARRY FESSENDEN from 2009 scheduled to post soon! chrishallock.substack.com?r=kax50&utm_...

A whirlwind day of writing program copy for Boston Underground #25, grading student work, and coordinating a short film shoot in two weeks. I’m oddly fueled by some terrible insomnia of late.

Think you are ready? #BUFF25 Badges are now on sale. bostonunderground.org/festival-bad...

My goodness, I know way too many good people who are suffering right now. What magick ritual can we work to turn their fortunes around?

I’m working on a pair of essays for upcoming Blu-Ray releases that couldn’t be more different aesthetically and narratively, yet they are still connected by the resiliency, the adventurous spirit, and the tireless DIY work ethic of the visionaries at their helms.

Thrilled to be collaborating on a feature screenplay with one of my favorite filmmakers! Finding balance between the supernatural and the political in our story.

Celebrate Boston Underground Film Festival’s 25 years of bringing weird world cinema to the city’s rabid cinephiles! BUFF25 takes place March 19-23! bostonunderground.org
