The organizational imperative for “growth” — for any kind of org — without some moral underpinning for what that growth is good for has bothered me since I was a kid. I’m not against growth. But explain to me why bigger is better and more is more than more in a way that has integrity

Surely they’re not related, but I like noting that Dylan played Tangled Up in Blue for the first time in eight years the day after Zach Bryan released a song called Is the Blue Tangled in You? (Fanfic shades of when Bob played Watchtower right after Mellencamp played it at the same show)

I received a letter from Phoebe Summersquash is a true story from my life, and “I Received a Letter from Phoebe Summersquash” would be a fantastic Small Factory song title

Both the Lois and the Small Factory versions of "Valentine". And just like that I am back in 1993. Fluxblog don't play.

The financials of Billy Strings are endlessly fascinating to me. Why he plays which venues. Why more artists don’t emulate his merch model. How he seems to take advantage of every money making avenue in a non gross way.

Generally, I'm an optimistic person! But some things floating around online today made me sad about the tech industry focus to erase what really are the best parts of getting to be human. Gonna sit with that a sec. Gonna be human with all the feelings about it.

Back in 1995, one of the things I didn't know the Internet would do—for many people, not all—is starve our sense of wonder. The whole world at our fingertips! Oh! That's too much! Let us curate that for you. Let us only give you what you already like. Let us snuff out all surprise. Better, right?😔

Truth. Micro-curating everything, for each person — news, music, whatever — is soul-killing. Pollination, friction, curiosity is essential to a rich experience of living

Fantastic show that day

July 25, 1992 (Protest at the Supreme Court): Together with Fugazi and the organization Positive Force, Bikini Kill played a large protest concert at Capitol Plaza and in front of the US Supreme Court. Bikini Kill - Rebel Girl #punkrockhistory

This was a great idea from @jayrosen.bsky.social and I can't believe press corps hasn't done it after all these years. They can come together to figure out how to host WHCD w a fascist president, but can't come together to figure out how stand up for their own vital industry (and thus US)

“reporters don’t need access to lies and liars to do their jobs.” 💯

shauna@goldengateblond.bsky.social

just as tinkerbell requires kids to clap to survive, trump needs media attention or he’ll die. so when he pulls this shit, they ALL need to tell him to get stuffed. boycott his pressers. ignore his social media blurps. reporters don’t need access to lies and liars to do their jobs.

Surprisingly solid Ramones set. Probably my favorite post-Rocket to Russia

Punk Rock History@punkrockhistory.bsky.social

39 years ago today Halfway to Sanity is the 10th studio album by the Ramones, and their last album to feature drummer Richie Ramone, released on this day in 1987. #punk #punks #punkrock #ramones #halfwaytosanity #history #punkrockhistory #otd

But this: The future of technology won't be built by billionaires. They can't invent la cumbia sonidera. They don't know how to live with intensity. They're too busy not getting older. No community, no responsibility, only a bubble they've convinced themselves is the world. They don't have a chance.

It was a little hard for me to digest at first (down to writing style and some contexts I think I don’t have). And as the piece says, it’s not a model to replicate. There’s life but also repression here…

If you’re gonna have two of something special, it might as well be two 8 oz crab cakes, and if you’re gonna have one of something special, it might as well be one pound of blue crab

But Timeless isn't gonna do it. At least box sets make money and stand for history. As well as the listeners two and three generations from now who dig deep for their influences...

If he wants to reach young listeners now, he'd be better off spending money to get TikTok kids to use Prince in their vids (or however it was that a Pavement b-side and Billy Joel's Vienna became among their most streamed songs)

Inspired by Julie's Q, what's a "previously unreleased" version of a song you like better than the original release? Quintessential example for me is Dylan's "Forever Young" demo from Biograph. It's actually the only version of that song that achieves what I think it's aiming for

what’s a cover you prefer to the original? my top ones are big river (dead covering cash) and walk on (panic covering neil)

Deke Dickerson looking sharp and kicking ass at Slim’s Last Chance. Brisket and bean chili. Show done by 7 pm. That pepperoni pizza must’ve killed me because I’m obvs in heaven

Friends…I come with sad news. It was just too much. I’ve been beaten. You can’t have Christmas every day of the year and retain what makes it special. And you — I — can’t have half a stick of pepperoni in every bite and survive

This time I placed the order by phone. Taker said he would add instructions for a “carpet of pepperoni.” I can still see cheese, but some of the li’l’ fellas are three deep, so I’m good!

In 1996 or ‘97, I was writing for one of the first online music mags, Addicted To Noise. I was young, the internet was new, and I needed a national outlet. Pay was zero. Dave said, “You gotta make them pay you. Even if it’s a symbolic $10. Never work for free. It’s the principle.”

Dave Marsh always made time to talk to me as a young writer, and I bet you could read this exact same post from hundreds of other writers. RIP Dave

I suppose no anchors is better than MAGA slop like over on Sinclair's Fox45. Still, this is a big change and a real opportunity for one of the other stations in town to pitch themselves as the one with real people doing the news, not computers.
