Whole bunch of weird and interesting fungal species (and okay a few boring ones) I’ve encountered, mostly for the first time, in travels through South Austin woods and ‘hoods in recent months. I took photos and tried to make sense of both the mushrooms themselves and bizarre names people call them.

One of the more contrived regular columns of my rock-crit career, this installment drawing parallels between Katy Perry, who I’ve paid even less attention to since but who just happens to turn 42 today, and Josie Cotton, who had 2 new wave novelty semi-hits from the Valley Girl soundtrack in 1982.

4000 words on whispery bare-bones rookies of the year, concept albums that probably aren't, extra-curricular clubs, Covid clairvoyance, pre-socially distanced isolation, New Age + mumble rap + showtune proclivities, Old Town Plank Roads, Africa ruling the world, and my 150 favorite albums of 2019.

Indiana's MX-80 Sound scientifically hybridized hard rock with free jazz for more than 4 decades. Their sound presaged Big Black, Sonic Youth, Swans, Voivod, on and on. Guitarist Bruce Anderson would’ve turned 77 today. Something I wrote about several cassette releases they put out in the mid ‘80s.

John Anderson, who died yesterday at 71, was not only my favorite country singer to emerge since the ‘70s; he was one of only a couple musical artists who I wrote full-length Village Voice reviews of *twice*. Here those are, along with a graf I wrote years later about his greatest post-’80s single.

Darryl Jennifer, bassist for the Chocolate City combo who as much as anybody invented hardcore punk, turns 66 tomorrow. 40 years ago, Bad Brains put out I Against I, which moved their bombardment more in the direction of the metal they’d grown up on. I interviewed Jennifer for Spin and wrote this.

In honor of what would've been Lux Interior’s 80th birthday tomorrow, something I wrote a few years ago about Jenna Ortega dancing on TV as Wednesday Addams to by far my favorite Cramps song. Plus who got there first with way-out bodies underneath their heads and matching towels, them or the B-52s?

The Sly Stoned headline is intentionally misleading because I write about lichens, technically fungi even though nobody treats them that way. But I also write about mosses, ball mosses and algae, which are definitely not. And show off pictures I took in the woods of all in the above. How thrilling!

Cordelia’s Dad from Northampton, Massachusetts drone tragic morose noise folk on a 3-inch CD EP; A Thousand Times Yes from Detroit sandwich a cappella voices and psychedelic harmonies between recurrent crescendos; Sullen from St. Louis slow ‘80s-style modern-rock tunes into grrrl-sludge trudge.

Just under 5000 words about my favorite (20 + 24) country singles of two years ago, most of which weren't hits and you probably never heard of, plus their music videos where applicable and other ancillary issues sometimes directly connected to country music and occasionally not so much. Yee-haw!

Happy Canadian Thanksgiving — and thank you, and apologies for our government down here — to my Canadian friends! We're so lucky to have you up there! Here’s a battle of two Canadian bands I wrote for Spin 32 years ago. One was led by a future celebrity who turned out to be a real creep. They lose.

Part Two: Approximately 1975 to 1979.

Mekons didn’t really catch on with U.S. critics until 1985’s Fear and Whiskey, still their best album. I don’t believe it was much reviewed Stateside before my Village Voice piece. Greil Marcus ultimately named it Album of the Decade. Today, Jon Langford, who's been there from the start, turns 69.

Just my periodic reminder that, if you're going to “follow” me here on Bluesky, you might as well also subscribe to me over there on Substack -- It's FREE (which gets you a weekly digest newsletter email), give or take a weekly-or-so post visible if you pay $50 for a year's worth. Your choice!

David Lee Roth turns 72 years old today, so what better time to acknowledge high and low points of his original tenure in Van Halen, who balanced awesome and trivial from 1978 to 1984: One pinnacle and one nadir per album, and sometimes the nadirs aren’t even so low. (But then there’s Diver Down…)

Megan Moroney has released three really good albums so far, which has to put her near the top of the list of women making country music in a decade when almost all the really good country music seems to be made by women. She also turns 29 today. What I wrote about her second album, two years ago.

So using a (not really all that) complicated but highly faux-objective mathematical formula taking into account whose albums finished where among my favorites of every year that decade, I calculated who the very best album artists of the ‘70s were. (Headline says 150 but technically there's 180!)

The Baader Meinhof Gang aka Red Army Faction were active in Germany from 1970 to 1998. Luke Haines, who turns 59 today, made his first Auteurs album in 1993. And his new solo album is good! Anyway, his 33 years beats RAF’s 28. But his best album was about them anyway. Here’s what I wrote about it.

My 150 favorite albums of 198-NINE. The number. Sound of the funky drummer. Plus 2100+ words on the end of history, end of the '80s, end of welfare as we know it, end of rock, a Joshua Clover book, women who rap, rappers who conceptualize, metal bands who prog, years vs eras, perestroika, and more!

One of my favorite musical artists of the ‘80s, on stage in Detroit. I wrote about him a lot back then! Probably better than this sometimes, though maybe not a lot better. Tomorrow he turns 75.
