Hey, I’m Kat - I’ve worked as a visdev artist on the Spiderverse films, KPop Demon Hunters, The Legend of Aang, and more! It’s nice to meet you, welcome!

My favorite part of working on animated films is getting to help with the color script, which is a narrative roadmap that helps to guide the color & lighting choices throughout the story. Here is my exploration work for some of the later sequences in the film Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender.

With typically only a few days to work on keys, the paintings are very small and simple but I wanted to show them (as well as the ideas I wrote down) as an authentic glimpse of the process.

All of these paintings were done on top of boards by the incredible story team - I don’t know every single person involved but I do know that the amazing Steve Ahn drew many of them himself. The spirit world sequence uses some beautiful concept paintings by Tomas Muir which I altered the colors of.

I am SO insanely excited to share that 1000xResist is now available physically! This is the illustration I made for the box cover of the Deluxe Edition, and I’m so proud to have gotten to collaborate with the folks at @sunsetvisitor.studio again on my favorite game of all time.

Here are other color options I tried during concept exploration that we ended up not going with. I tried different, darker versions of Aang’s color palette as well as more spirit inspired takes.

The Golden Age of Airbenders. I painted this image for the flashback sequences in Avatar Aang, depicting Sonam’s ancient Airbender civilization in its heyday.

My work on the Denied in Avatar Aang! I did initial concepts for the airships in the film, as well as final color design for the lead Denied characters. Credits below

AD Aaron Loftis did so much work to flesh out these early airship concepts and bring them to the look in the movie! I only did color for the Denied characters; the character designs are by Kihyun Ryu with clean lineart assist by Honor Miles!

Thank you so much for being here: I genuinely wouldn’t be where I am today without the online artist community. I really do mean that because if it weren’t for all of the wonderful people sharing my art on the internet, the last 10 years would’ve happened very differently.

I would still be living in Virginia, working as a clinical therapist (and probably being really bad at it tbh.) Thank you so much for sticking around and being here and I hope to keep on making cool things until I’m DEAD!!!! All my love!!!

Looking back on the last decade I can’t help but be grateful. I moved to LA from Virginia at 21 to pursue working as an artist in the animation industry, and I don’t think the 20-year-old me could’ve anticipated all the cool things I’ve gotten to do since then. I can still barely comprehend it now!

Important note: As someone who is Asian and has dealt with colorism in my own life, I want to be clear that my painting is just a concept, which is why she’s a bit paler/more ghostly. The version we ended up with in the final film is most accurate to her beautiful, true dark skin tone!

Update on this situation from our incredible PD Jake who is more qualified to speak on this than I. This is the last time I will be posting about this- thanks everyone for supporting our artists.

I have no clue why it was on that slide or who put it there, and every member of the crew I worked with is 100% against AI. Every aspect of the animation is handcrafted by real artists and I hope that people don’t use this slide as a reason to detract from how much love and labor went into the film.

I made these paintings of Tagah and Sonam for the flashback sequences in the Avatar Aang movie, which I was so lucky to help guide the style direction of.

My painting of Sonam’s temple for Avatar Aang. Much of the work I did on this film was developing the style for the ancient flashback sequences! #avataraang
