A to Z of Women in Horror concludes with a film to bridge women in horror and zombies -- Z is for THE ZOMBIES OF SUGAR HILL. A glorious Blaxploitation female revenge with voodoo zombies. Marki Bey's Sugar looks gorgeous getting even & kicking ass. youtube.com/shorts/zoJji... #filmsky

A to Z of zombies concludes with Z is for ZOMBI! Success of Romero’s Dawn of the Dead prompted producers to package this as an unofficial sequel. Directed by great Lucio Fulci, score by incredible Fabio Frizzi & underwater zombie! One of my fav zombie films of all time. youtube.com/shorts/ehFMq...

A to Z of Women in Horror: Y is for Yvonne DeCarlo. Yes that's a cheat. If you have a better Y please drop it in comments! But Yvonne was the picture of goth beauty on the TV sitcom The Munsters. She went from femme fatale in some great noirs to Lily Munster! Love her. youtube.com/shorts/x5JDJ...

A to Z of zombies continues with Y is for YUMMY, a zombie film from Belgium with a touch of The Substance. A young woman goes to a questionable Eastern European cosmetic clinic and her boyfriend unleashes a zombie outbreak. Delicious gore. youtube.com/shorts/avVRf...

Cinema Junkie Beth Accomando’s 31 Days of Horror: The A to Z of Women in Horror continues with X is for X and MaXXXine with Mia Goth kicking ass in two roles and then also making Pearl, the third film in the trilogy but no X in that. youtube.com/shorts/kdnfg...

A to Z of zombies: X is for The X-Files. The dead have risen on The X-Files voodoo style in Fresh Bones, seriously in Millennium, & hilariously in Hollywood AD where Gary Shandling and Tea Leoni play Hollywood versions of Fox and Mulder. Great series. youtube.com/shorts/8XT9H...

A to Z of Women in Horror continues with W is for Fay Wray, the original scream queen. As the damsel in distress coveted by King Kong she screamed her way from Kong Island to New York City. youtube.com/shorts/lxdWF... #filmsky

A to Z of zombies: W for WARM BODIES. Romeo & Juliet reimagined as rom-zom-com. Romeo is R and his struggle to reconcile what he has become with what he vaguely remembers he used to be is both funny and poignant making him thoroughly lovable. youtube.com/shorts/s4W5T...

Join Stay Strange SD for its annual Cemetery Creep bike ride on Saturday and ride to Mount Hope Cemetery and discover its hidden treasures. youtu.be/Zg5ukj_2GIA

A to Z of zombies: V is for VERSUS (2000). Crazy Japanese zombie film with action flair of John Woo. Directed by Ryūhei Kitamura (Godzilla Final Wars). There's a Forest of Resurrection, characters who fight each other through eternity & a horde of zombies. Ton o' fun! youtube.com/shorts/lJZ3z...

A to Z of Women in Horror: U is for URBAN GHOST STORY, 1998 UK supernatural tale. Lizzie dies but is revived & brings something evil back with her. Only feature directed by Geneviève Jolliffe, gritty and atmospheric. youtube.com/shorts/xbEKD...

A to Z of zombies continues with U is for UNDEAD, an Aussie zombie apocalypse film from the Spierig Brothers. A meteor shower transforms the residents of an Australian fishing village into flesh-eating zombies. Definitely has a comic bent. youtube.com/shorts/is-vG... #filmsky

A to Z of Women in Horror: T is for TEETH. Not directed by a woman but another film that feels apt in wake of Cornell 7. Dawn discovers she has vagina dentata & hunts predatory men. Film has a disclaimer: "No man was harmed during the making of this film." #filmsky youtube.com/shorts/4sTBO...

A to Z of zombies: T is for TRAIN TO BUSAN. This Korean film invested a standard zombie apocalypse with heartbreaking emotions that reflected social & political issues of a country divided. Director Yeon Sang-ho also made: COLONY, SEOUL STATION & PENNINSULA. youtube.com/shorts/yabYm...

I curated 10 films from the KPBS+ library for Halloween. First one is free. Check it out. There are some delicious treats. plus.kpbs.org/collection/5...

A to Z of Women in Horror: S is for Mary Shelley, author of Frankenstein. She published her book anonymously in 1818 (at the age of 18) because it was unthinkable a woman could create such a horror tale. Thank you Mary for blazing a path for women in horror. youtube.com/shorts/eeHA6...

A to Z of zombies: S is for Seoul Station. Shaun of the Dead is the obvious pick but Seoul Station is a gut punch like only South Korea can deliver. It’s the animated prequel to Train to Busan and it is brilliant and emotionally devastating. #filmsky youtube.com/shorts/yKLzJ...

A to Z of Women in Horror: R is for Alma Reville, screenwriter, film editor & wife of Alfred Hitchcock. Credited as writer for Shadow of a Doubt & Suspicion but she was always Hitch's closest collaborator & sounding board. youtube.com/shorts/VtM5W...

A to Z of zombies: R is for RAMMBOCK: BERLIN UNDEAD. Gritty, unflashy German zombie film looks to a group of common folks trying to survive the zombie apocalypse. Well worth checking out & credited as Germany’s first zombie film. Personal fav for R is Re-Animator. youtube.com/shorts/N4ee9...

A to Z of Women in Horror: Q is for… tough one but went with QUEEN KONG more comedy than horror but she does terrorize London. Female film crew goes to island & finds Queen Kong. Horror, hilarity, & female empowerment. Tagline: She's in one of her moods again! youtube.com/shorts/JJYW-...

A to Z of zombies: Q is for QUEENS OF THE DEAD. Can’t do better than a zombie film from the daughter of the master himself, Tina Romero. And seriously, dealing with zombie apocalypse at a drag club with a bunch of queens is fierce fun. youtube.com/shorts/DXeDB...

Fright for Future is a haunt with a cause. #halloween youtube.com/shorts/nX3ug...

A to Z of Women in Horror continues with P is for Toby Poser. Poser is a film/theater actor, writer/director/producer & a force of nature. Along with her husband John Adams, and daughters, Lulu and Zelda, they make insanely good indie horror films; bold and original. youtube.com/shorts/TV_Vr...

A to Z of zombies: P is for Plaga Zombie 1 & 2. Pontypool is best zombie film that starts with a P but I always bring it up so let me give some love to this low-budget delight from Argentina. Crazy energy, wild kills & one of the best uses of intestines. youtube.com/shorts/CGGvD... #filmsky

Fright for Future -- A haunted Maze of True Terrors opens tonight! It's a haunt with a social message designed to scare you into action! vanguardculture.com/culture-geek...

A to Z of zombies: I know what you’re expecting. Must be NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD. But if you don’t know that film is a seminal zombie film then unfriend me now. So N is for NIGHT OF THE COMET, an delicious zombie horror comedy with Kelli Maroney stealing the show. youtube.com/shorts/BFVS_...

A to Z of zombies: M is for MISS ZOMBIE, a 2013 deadpan social satire from iconoclastic Japanese director Sabu. In the future zombies are domesticated and kept as pets or servants, but a sexy zombie upsets a household in this black and white art house zombie film. youtube.com/shorts/0Ur8l...

A to Z of Women in Horror: M is for Lesley Manning. Welsh born Manning made cult hit Ghostwatch, an early found footage film & highest rated single drama for 48 yrs. Premise: for Halloween BBC decides to do live broadcast into the supernatural & things go awry. youtube.com/shorts/S89fx...

A to Z of Women in Horror: J is for Nikyatu Jusu, director of domestic horror film NANNY. Amazingly shot, well-acted and haunting beauty. Jusu is a talent to watch. youtube.com/shorts/w1gLm...

A to Z of zombies: J is for Juan of the Dead. Like Romero's films, Cuban comedy finds zombies fertile ground for clever political & social satire. Here zombies are labeled dissidents by the gov, which assumes they are covertly funded by U.S. youtube.com/shorts/TmjQ-... #filmsky

Catching up...31 Days of Horror: The A to Z of Women in Horror continues with I is for I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE (1978) starring Camille Keaton. In the wake of the Cornell 7 this rape revenge film seems appropriate horror. #filmsky

A to Z of zombies: I for IN THE FLESH (also check out I WALKED WITH A ZOMBIE). BBC's IN THE FLESH is savagely satirical yet deeply affecting & disturbing in unexpected ways. The undead suffer from Post-Deceased Syndrome or PDS and can be "cured." youtube.com/shorts/UpZuN...

Just a reminder that Pan's Labyrinth returns to cinemas and that the @realgdt.bsky.social parable about choice and disobedience is as potent today as it was 20 years ago. I dug up my 2006 interview with him for this story. www.kpbs.org/news/arts-cu...

A to Z of Women in Horror: H is for Debra Hill. I feel like Hill has existed in Carpenter’s shadow & deserves a shoutout. She produced & co-wrote Halloween I & 2 plus The Fog & Cronenberg’s The Dead Zone. youtube.com/shorts/hcX6G... #filmsky

A to Z of zombies: H is for LA HORDE, a gritty French cop/gangster revenge story with zombies thrown in for fun. No explanation for zombies, they could just be a product of a world grown increasingly violent. Click on link for more zombie films. #filmsky youtube.com/shorts/GMoXG...

A to Z of Women in Horror: G is for Rose Glass (Saint Maud, Love Lies Bleeding). Glass gets inside Maud’s intoxicating visions with a darkly seductive visual style. It's horror for the adventurous & don’t blink at the end because the final image is a gut punch. youtube.com/shorts/0ARc9...

A to Z of zombies: G is for THE GIRL WITH ALL THE GIFTS. Zombies are called hungries. Like Last of Us, cordyceps virus is the cause. Outstanding cast, production design and sound work. youtube.com/shorts/ixE02... #Filmsky

A to Z of zombies: F is for FIDO… no contest. Scottish comedian Billy Connolly joins ranks of the undead in this smart, funny, delightfully stylish Canadian zom-com. It’s Lassie but little Timmy has a pet zombie. youtube.com/shorts/6eS-7... #filmsky

A to Z of Women in Horror: E is for ELVIRA! How could I not mention the Mistress of the Dark, she's probably responsible for creating a whole generation of horror fans. Cassandra Peterson deserves thx for this campy, sexy, smart horror icon. youtube.com/shorts/oJXYd...
