One risk around this discovery is that the existence of fake polls will fuel distrust in election polling across the political spectrum and could be used to bolster “rigged election” claims after election results are announced.

Here's the latest from our @cip.uw.edu election rumor research team ... ⤵️⤵️⤵️ 🧵On Tuesday, Wedgewood Polls released a statement admitting that their polling was fake and justifying it as part of a social experiment to draw attention to low oversight in polling.

News of this admission — the second case of “fake polls” this cycle — was quickly amplified and wrapped into a number of different rumors and narratives. Conversation and framing contests around this news continue.

Partisan actors across the spectrum have used the revelation to declare that polls were underrepresenting support for their parties and potentially causing voter suppression for their candidates.

"Maricopa County has become a trope, a suspicious setting, for election rumors. It’s a ready-to-use building block for a new rumor or conspiracy theory,” @cip.uw.edu co-founder @katestarbird.bsky.social tells @wired.com in an interview. ⤵️⤵️⤵️

Many “rigged election” rumors build upon the same story elements or tropes. Maricopa has become a familiar (suspicious) setting, a place where election issues arise or are perceived to arise, & where those issues get wrapped into “rigged election” conspiracy theories. www.wired.com/story/marico...

🧵Our @cip.uw.edu election rumor research team published a new Election Rumor Rundown memo on recent emergent rumors including: 1️⃣How a key DHS report of foreign parts in voting machines spawned false rumors of foreign election interference.

2️⃣How a rumor of "ballot dumping" in Valley Center, California contributes to false narratives of mass mail-in voting fraud. 3️⃣Prediction market platforms post election administration-related headlines

We have data! It's taken a bit to get our data into place and reconfigure our tooling, but we're operational again for X and Bluesky data. Here's a link to an interactive graph of a "rigged election" rumor about election workers in AZ, currently spreading on X: faculty.washington.edu/kstarbi/Spot...

Over on X, the “rigged election” crowd is pushing rumors around a video livestream clip of election workers, working late at night, allegedly doing something nefarious. Maricopa officials have explained that the workers are just… doing their jobs. But rumors around the video continue to swirl.

These false rumors and misleading narratives draw upon deeper stories and diminished trust in elections, rooted in varying degrees of truth, within political communities on the right and left.

Real voting issues become misleading narratives through false allegations of “voter fraud” intentions, ignored or obscured remedies, and exaggerations of the potential impact on election results.

This election season, our team at the UW Center for an Informed Public will again be working to help people navigate the increasingly convoluted information flows surrounding U.S. Elections. Since 2020, we’ve tracked rumors about voting & election integrity. uwcip.substack.com/p/our-electi...

Though the behavior of Russia, China and Iran is not new, "this year, their access to sophisticated artificial intelligence tools and the lack of federal governmental pushback against them will likely require additional diligence from voters to ensure that they have accurate information." [2/3]
