🌊 The Vision 2040 for Fisheries is out! Rightly so, it does not call for a revision of the Common Fisheries Policy Regulation. The priority now is to redirect public money towards low-impact, small-scale fishers and strengthen fisheries control and data collection.

If there's one thing we need to see take shape at this year's COP, it's a transition away from fossil fuels towards a renewables-based, electrified energy system. The transition must be sustainable & just, with States needing to commit to no new fossil fuel projects, enshrined in law.

We'll be attending COP31 to put legal accountability at the heart of these negotiations, and remind world leaders they have a legal imperative to turn bold commitments into binding action and deliver on the promises they make.

We've never needed a COP to be focused on fossil fuel phase-out more. 2026 has shown us through extreme heatwaves, wildfires & mass-scale flooding that the impacts of the climate crisis are not a future problem & we know a huge part of the solution is to stop relying on polluting fossil fuels.

So why, ahead of COP31 that the countries are co-hosting, does a new analysis from Global Witness suggest both Turkish & Australian fossil fuel companies are planning to rapidly increase oil & gas production, as well as both already being significant players in the global supply chain for coal?

One million people across Europe have made themselves heard: Hands off nature! Polluters and many EU leaders are pushing to weaken health and environmental protections as we speak. 💚Let’s give our leaders more than a million reasons to not ignore nature! Sign until 20.10: www.handsoffnature.eu

We're telling the company behind Tefal - SEB - to phase out forever chemicals - or risk a lawsuit. We don't think SEB is doing enough to address the health and environmental risks of using forever chemicals. SEB has 3 months to commit to transition away from forever chemicals or face legal action.

🙌Win for UK nature🙌 The Bristol River Avon has had its rights formally recognised, in a public signing of the Avon bioregional charter of river rights.

These include the right to: 💚Exist 💚Thrive 💚Evolve naturally 💚Flow sustainably 💚Not be polluted 💚Preserve its biodiversity 💚Aim for regeneration and restoration 💚Build cultural and community connection 💚Represent and advocate for the rights of the river

Roughly 40 river charters have happened since the first - that of Sussex River Ouse, which became the first river in England to have its rights recognised by a local authority in Feb 2025. More here: www.theguardian.com/environment/... #CleanWaterNow

🩸People living near a chemical plant in the UK have high levels of toxic PFAS chemicals in their blood🩸 Residents of Thornton-Cleveleys in Lancashire live near the AGC Chemicals factory. Now, after testing, the villagers have been told they have high levels of PFAS in their blood.

PFAS have been linked to many negative health impacts in humans & animals, including cancers & impaired foetal development. What's been discovered in Thornton-Cleveleys is the tip of iceberg of PFAS pollution in the UK. People are slowly realising the damage done to them over years of exposure.

While the EU is at least tabling a complete ban on these toxic chemicals, no such thing is happening in the UK. 👉Nothing less that a total ban on toxic PFAS is good enough.

These chemicals can be found in endless everyday objects from cookware to outdoor clothing. But they take decades, if not more, to break down in the environment and as a consequence are entering into water systems and soil.

We had five heatwaves in Europe in a span of a few months. Unprecedented wildfires and droughts have displaced thousands and disrupted entire industries. What more needs to happen for governments to treat ecosystem destruction and the climate crisis as the security risk that it is?

At #UNGA we expect heads of state & govts to act on the ICJ's Advisory Opinion on climate change:   1. Deliver a managed fossil fuel phase-out 2. Treat ecosystem protection & restoration as security infrastructure 3. Align budgets & public finance with climate & nature security imperatives

We argue claims like "100% made of recycled PET plastic", "made from another bottle", and "recyclable" can create the misleading impression that single-use plastic bottles are part of a closed recycling loop.

🔍Companies making green claims should be paying attention. Poland’s consumer watchdog, UOKiK, has formally weighed in on our case against Nestlé Poland, just weeks before its first court hearing.

This year, UOKiK has taken action over potentially misleading environmental claims by companies including Allegro, DHL, DPD, InPost & L’Oréal Poland. Now, the authority has submitted a formal opinion to the court in our case challenging recycling claims used to market Nałęczowianka bottled water.

🐬📢 We're taking action against destructive bottom trawling in Italy📢🐬 With our partners Legambiente and the support of @bluemarinef.bsky.social, we’re urging the authorities to take steps to avoid the destruction of MPAs and protect their vitally important marine habitats and species. 1/5

We aim to: 👉 Highlight that authorities in charge of these MPAs are obliged to effectively protect them 👉 Ensure they complete seabed habitat mapping & adopt effective management measures to comply with EU nature laws 👉 Require them to do necessary risk assessments & adopt protective measures 4/5

“Protected must mean protected. Our research shows local authorities in Italy are ignoring legal obligations to protect these ecologically significant sites. That’s simply not good enough. Our legal action is putting Italian authorities on notice.” Francesco Maletto, ClientEarth lawyer 5/5

Bottom trawling involves dragging large, weighted nets across the seabed to catch commercially valuable species that live near the seafloor. It causes habitat destruction to vital and fragile ecosystems like reefs and Mediterranean seagrass and negatively impacts the ocean as a carbon store. 2/5

Though Italy’s MPAs cover around 11% of the country’s waters, just 1% of them are effectively protected. This means many areas home to marine species (including bottlenose dolphins), seabed and sea meadows that should be protected from harmful practices like bottom trawling are not. 3/5

😭A major set-back for corporate accountability and climate justice😭 In a move we knew - but couldn't quite believe - was coming, New Zealand has now passed its Climate Change Response Amendment Bill, banning climate related tort claims against big polluters. 1/4

The government’s Justice Committee recommended that the Bill be passed without amendment despite huge public opposition raised during the select committee process. Of the 623 submissions, 93% opposed the Bill and only 2.6% supported it. 3/4

"The effect of this legislation is clear: it would shield major emitters while restricting the public's ability to seek justice for climate harm. This is a political choice to prioritise short-term private profit over fairness, accountability & the rule of law." Laura Clarke OBE, ClientEarth CEO 4/4

🎉Win for environmental rights🎉 Shell's planned fossil fuel exploration off South Africa's Wild Coast has been blocked by the country's top court, in a case brought by Wild Coast Communities and other environmental groups. 1/2

The case argued that authorities had failed to meaningfully consult communities that would be affected by Shell's exploration project, as well as not sufficiently considering its impact on marine life and the climate. 2/2

This win proves that when 1000s of people raise their voices together, even a global banking giant can be pushed to change course. But the fight isn’t over. JPMorgan Chase remains connected to Saguaro. ClientEarth USA & partners will keep pushing financial institutions to stay away from it. 4/5

Big polluters and their backers have one goal: keep the world hooked on fossil fuels. This diverts resources away from truly sustainable solutions, and puts people and planet at risk. Thank you to everyone who signed, shared and spoke up. This is your win too. 🐋 5/5 #WhalesOrGas #BallenasoGas

Last month, more than 90,000 petition signatures were delivered directly to the banks’ offices in Mexico City. Now, Santander has publicly distanced itself from the project. 2/5

Santander had been publicly identified as one of the financial advisers working with Saguaro’s developer as it sought financing for the project. Saguaro threatens to turn the Gulf of California into a shipping corridor for huge LNG tankers, putting whales and countless other animals at risk. 3/5

Yet in some countries, people have to fight through confusing rules to make this happen. Five years after the EU deadline, Poland and Hungary still make energy communities very difficult to set up. 3/4

Energy communities make that possible. People can come together to produce, use and share renewable energy locally – cutting bills and relying less on volatile fossil fuel markets. By combining solar and wind, households could save up to €930 a year! 2/4
