Kamila Camilo reports back from the 2026 Planetary Health Check at #ClimateWeekNYC. Her @oeco.org.br column (in Portuguese) explains how seven out of nine critical Earth systems have already been exceeded — but solutions exist to make the planet’s prognosis better. oeco.org.br/colunas/leva...

If you want to be a part of the cure, she suggests checking out the Climate TRACE platform to see where major sources of emissions are located near where you live — and explore possible solutions to reduce them. climatetrace.org/air-pollution

climatetrace.orgAir pollutionAir pollution from burning fossil fuels kills 8.7 million people each year. We homed in on over 9,500 point-sources located in urban areas that expose a disproportionate number of people to PM2.5

Artificial intelligence is a tool that can be used in a limitless number of ways — including to greatly increase greenhouse gas emissions, or greatly decrease them. Which one will the world choose? 🌎

While more countries are working to reduce their national methane emissions, many state and regional governments — which hold direct authority over the landfill, wastewater, and agricultural systems that emit the most — don’t have comprehensive methane action plans in place. 💨

In a first-of-its-kind partnership under the Subnational Methane Action Coalition, the Maryland Department of the Environment and UC Berkeley Center for Law, Energy, and the Environment (CLEE) are working together to strengthen methane action in the US state of Maryland.

Rice is a staple crop for more than one billion people, but across South Asia, high-resolution information about where it grows remains limited. That kind of data is critical to support food security assessments, agricultural monitoring, and climate-related research. 🍚

Reducing carbon dioxide emissions tends to be the main focus of efforts to combat climate change, but there are plenty of other superpollutants that have an outsized impact on global temperatures — some of which can be cut much faster.

For example, methane is a potent greenhouse gas. Climate TRACE estimates that the top 10% of landfills we monitor account for 70% of methane emissions from waste. That's valuable data for decision-makers working with limited resources that want to make the most impact.

This new report from Arc highlights how localized asset-level data can help build a more accurate picture of a company’s real-world footprint and help decision-makers choose the most relevant ways they can contribute to the clean energy transition: arcconnect.global/news/one-siz...

Our shipping sector lead OceanMind examines how the Strait of Hormuz crisis has affected shipping traffic across the Persian Gulf, and by extension, the emissions from those vessels and ports.

The Central African Copperbelt is the world’s largest source of copper and cobalt, which are both crucial components for sustainable technologies. For the green transition to be truly clean, we need to understand how extracting these critical minerals impacts local communities.

We can also track how harmful particulate matter (PM2.5) drifts from mining facilities towards surrounding communities. Watch how wind conditions can blow PM2.5 plumes from two “super emitters” on the border of Kitwe both into the city and towards neighboring Ndola.

The people of the Copperbelt have been living with chronic harmful air pollution for decades. We estimate that the blue dots on this map, which represent a dozen operations between major urban centers, emitted 7.6 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) in 2025.

Methane is second only to carbon dioxide in contributing to climate change. However, many solutions to reduce methane emissions are achievable relatively quickly, with landfill gas capture, flaring, and energy recovery presenting some of the best mitigation opportunities.

N2O is about 300 times more potent than CO2, making ambitious action in the agricultural sector critical to protecting both our climate and health. Our data on nitrous oxide emissions were used to identify where synthetic fertilizer use is most intensive: climatetrace.org/explore#admi...

climatetrace.orgClimate TRACEWe make meaningful climate action faster and easier by mobilizing the global tech community to track greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions with unprecedented detail.

To develop impactful decarbonization plans, decisionmakers need to know where and when greenhouse gas and air pollutant emissions are occurring. Our coalition’s mission is to get them that data — and make it as easy to put into practice as possible.

Climate TRACE’s Benedicte De Gelder and Anthony Russo will guide attendees in exploring our asset-level data and transition planning tools, while Honorine van den Broek d'Obrenan will share how @c40cities.bsky.social is already using them.

🚚 GHG emissions increased in agriculture, buildings, and waste, while decreasing in fossil fuel operations, manufacturing, and power. The transportation sector saw the greatest change in emissions year over year, with emissions increasing by 2.5% compared to July 2025.

🌍 Global GHG emissions for the month totaled 4.9 billion tonnes CO2e, an increase of 0.1% since July 2025. Total global year-to-date emissions are 33.7 billion tonnes CO2e, 0.3% higher than 2025’s total for the same time period.

Countries are coming to terms with the fact that transitioning to clean power ensures energy security when disruptions like the war in Iran spike oil and gas prices. @apnews.com takes a closer look at how geopolitical instability affects global emissions: apnews.com/article/iran...

apnews.comThe Iran war is driving clean energy development. It's not enough to help the planet, yetCountries are embracing clean power and taking steps to use less energy because of the war against Iran. But it is not yet enough to help address climate change.

The push for more renewable energy has reduced greenhouse gas emissions from the power sector. But due to changes in other sectors, Climate TRACE data from the first half of the year found that global emissions increased 0.2% compared to 2025: climatetrace.org/news/climate...

climatetrace.orgClimate TRACE Data Show Marginal Increase in Global Emissions in the First Half of 2026August release 5.10.0 includes monthly emissions data through June 2026. Emissions for the first half of 2026 were higher than in the first half of 2025.

Directa estimates that the expansion of Barcelona’s airport could amount to up to 60% of Catalonia’s CO2 emissions cap between 2031 and 2035 — but those emissions will not be counted towards their regional greenhouse gas inventories.

This news is sobering, but many are missing one of the most important findings of the report: according to the authors, “Every fraction of a degree avoided and every year by which overshoot is shortened will save lives, protect ecosystems and reduce economic losses.”
