I understand the argument against using AI for all writings but I really don’t understand the backlash against using AI for making slides

This morning my students basically told me 26-year-old is quite old and is not different from 50-year-old and I’m still heartbroken about it

On a personal note: I ate more than 20 tacos in two days in Mexico City. Enough amount for me to spend another depressing year in no-decent-Mexican-food Boston.

On October 27, I will give a talk on my book about the data and symbolic politics of China’s Social Credit System at the Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. You can also register and watch it on zoom: ii.umich.edu/lrccs/news-e...

First time reviewing a paper examining the things I wanted to examine with the theoretical interventions in the direction I would like to adopt. Bye a side project for now I guess…

Random 4S concluding thoughts: there’s an unprecedented opportunity for STS to grow and institutionalize but we’re likely to miss it (and it’s… ok?)

One 4S observation: I have never heard so many people express interest in what Chinese people are doing (in the context of every social studies of AI panel).

Found out my article had become the most-read article in Critical Sociology → vanity led me to check what's going on → discovered that many people were citing my article as proof that the Chinese social credit system that scores millions of people exists on reddit/twitter → screaming into the void

Talked to a student last week, and she was like “I read your dissertation!” So I reread it today, and now I’m so embarrassed I want to embargo it forever

Heading to 4S? I’ll be in Toronto October 7–10, presenting three coauthored papers: a quantitative study of public perceptions of human intervention in algorithmic decisions, a conceptual paper on technological liminality, and a qualitative study of bureaucrats’ data work. Come say hi!

Here's a screenshot of a Chinese online discussion group on "human–machine love." Almost no one in the group is actually discussing the topic and the first three pages are nearly all research recruitment ads...

This is horrible news. I don't think I could conduct my fieldwork or finish my dissertation without the DDRIG. This would also eliminate one of the very few funding opportunities accessible to international students, making their already-terrible situations worse.

The war on science comes to the @asanews.bsky.social dissertation grants:

It's clear to me now that many really don't care about sociology as a discipline, but are simply using the moment to express their grievance and resentment toward the journals and departments that rejected them. Funny that this is the same group of people who are against "grievance studies."

I tried so hard to be sympathetic to the conservative wing of sociology, but what on earth is requiring all faculty to take the GRE and firing those with lower scores supposed to achieve?

We've seen this over and over again. Why don't women negotiate more? Because they're punished when they do. Why don't they network with more people? Because they're punished for it. Women don't need to change the way they act. They're acting rationally based on the way the world reacts to them. +

Sigh. That feeling when you think a reviewer’s critique missed the point, but then you start reworking the manuscript and discover issues even more critical than what they pointed out and now the revision is taking way longer than expected

First they came for my beloved em dash and colon, and now they’re coming for my favorite sentence structures: apparently, ‘not only… but also,’ ‘instead of,’ and ‘is not… but’ have all been condemned as AI language now...

I’m so tempted to organize my book introduction around the stories of three Wangs to connect social credit system with China’s social transformation in the 1980s, policy experimentation and admiration for U.S. systems in the 2000s, and the normalization of bureaucratic practice in the 2010s

Found a random classification gap: the “Research Article” category for CHI only appears after 2008. Before that, papers were labeled simply as “articles,” which isn’t included in the ACM Digital Library’s “content type” filter. So if you rely on that filter (like me), you may miss a lot of papers.

I used Claude for some small computational text analysis tasks, and it performed better than expected. Maybe I’m not an expert in CSS, so I can’t judge it very well, but it feels like it did a better job there than when using Claude for qualitative analysis, where it feels quite rigid

I spent my whole morning trying to upload a paper to arxiv is this part of the additional labor of the interdisciplinary scholarship 😮‍💨
