I think one of the biggest misconceptions people have about Mario spinoffs and sub series is that Nintendo doesn’t own the rights to the characters and content. See all the talk of Rare and Kremlings or characters from the Mario & Luigi and Paper Mario series not appearing in spinoffs.

This is incorrect though. Based on the copyright notices in game and on the Nintendo website, they maintain full ownership of characters and elements from those games. If they wanted to put say, Fawful in Mario Kart, they could. It’s not a Geno situation.

Gonna be honest, I feel like the Switch 2 situation is fine because as the owner of the console, you should be allowed to do whatever you like with it. If you want to run homebrew or mod games, companies shouldn’t be allowed to restrict you from doing so. I’m a huge open source proponent here.

Do you ever think about how in some other universe, their versions of games like Super Mario Odyssey were based on unused concept art while their concept art was for ideas we got in this universe? Imagine them only seeing the Ruined Dragon’s Dark Souls esque look in the Art of Super Mario Odyssey…

Gonna be blunt, 99% of critiques of gamers and gaming culture could be broadened to ‘fans of fiction/media in general’ or even ‘humans’. Don’t know the devs and only care about the franchises? That’s most fans of anything. Limited tastes? Most people have those. Toxic fans? Very common elsewhere.

There seems to be an attitude that gaming is some uniquely hostile or weird space, but practically speaking, much of it can be summed up as “humans can be crazy assholes”.

So, it seems like social media’s gone crazy with ripped Switch 2 music, models, textures and other content. This is certainly going to be an interesting week for sure! (Though I suspect Nintendo’s super pissed, especially now multiple people are trying to code Switch 2 emulators)

For a quick Screenshot Saturday deal, I tried to recreate the first boss from Wario Land 4 in SMW for my ever delayed hack of that game. For the most part, it works like in the original game, horrifying mid-battle design change included.

Yeah RHDN is pretty much all in on AI in video game mods and translations. And the fan translation community has seen a large influx of people making these things quickly with AI for internet cred.

Krokodyl@krokodyl.bsky.social

I looked through the last 100 English fan translations published on RHDN (over 3 weeks), and at least 74 are AI translations. I didn't realize this was the current state of the hobby. Make of that what you will.

Read some discussions about the Super Mario Land series and why Nintendo doesn’t seem to reference them much, and wow, people really don’t realise how well those games sold. Super Mario Land sold 18 million copies and its sequel 11 million. They didn’t ’flop’ by any stretch of the imagination.

Tech in general in many ways. Internet speeds are way faster, video game consoles far more powerful, and both indie games and fan projects are way better and more technically advanced. And as much as I hate the modern net… HTML, CSS and JavaScript are way better and more capable now.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

Like it’s worth noting that for years, centering an element on a web page was difficult enough it was a meme. Having a 3 column layout of equal lengths was a ‘holy grail’. Multiple image sizes, scoped styles and custom form fields were dreams. Now we’ve got flexbox and grid and things just work.

Gonna be blunt, I think the gaming world really needs an equivalent to the Electronic Frontier Foundation or its ilk. We’ve seen too many cases of companies and individuals being unreasonable and attacking freedom of speech and expression (leaks, game data, mods and fanworks, journalism). 1/2

It needs an organisation with funding and lawyers willing to foot the bill for lawsuits whenever a company or individual thinks they can bully or threaten people into silence for saying or doing things they don’t feel comfortable with, even if it’s blatantly legal.

Am I the only one who really struggles to pick a favourite ANYTHING? Feels like I don’t really have a single favourite character, game, film, TV show, etc. It’s all very contextual and mood dependent. Is this some sort of neurodivergent trait?

QTP with your top 3DS games! Honestly I’m kinda boring… the games I enjoyed the most were generally spinoffs in the Mario series. Also Mario Kart 7 has the best selection of retro tracks in the series outside of Tour and the Booster Course Pass.

QTP with your top 3DS games! (I'm realizing that the 3DS doesn't actually have tons of games I care about.)

The attached image doesn’t show it too well, but this is probably the biggest technological revolution that SMW ROM hacks have ever seen. You can literally put things from arcade, Neo Geo, GBA and sometimes even DS games on the SNES now, with all their animation frames intact.

Dynamic Xtreme v1.0.0-rc.1 is now available! An advanced dynamic graphics, pose rendering, and palette system for Super Mario World, with LoROM/SA-1 support and integration with PIXI, UberASMTool, and GPS. Link in the first reply. #smw #smwhacking #snes #romhacking

I almost feel bad for ARMS. The game had so much potential as both a game and a series and it’s just been abandoned. Could have been the next Splatoon if it got a solid sequel that expanded on the original enough.

Anyone else just not have the profile links option even after having updated the BlueSky app? Feels weird that the option just seems to be missing entirely.

So the Switch 2 has been hacked. I’m fascinated to know what this means for datamining. What exactly did Nintendo cut from Mario Kart World, DK Bananza, Air Riders, Age of Imprisonment, etc?

Nintendo Switch 2 hacked (by AI), first jailbreak released, allows hombrew, dumping and modding games www.resetera.com/threads/16...

Is it wrong that my first thought here was that it reminds me of Space Jam: A New Legacy with all those horror villains and live-action film characters watching a Looney Tunes basketball game? Honestly, massive crossovers have a tendency to… completely ignore the spirit of the source material.

Seeing how long I’ve been writing articles online makes me wonder where all the time has gone. What do you mean the earliest articles on my site date from about 2012? Have I really been at this Gaming Reinvented thing for more than 14 years now?

The fact this was 3 years ago feels unreal to me. Like god time flies. Fun game though, and I loved how creative the new enemies and items and level themes were.

Stealth40k@stealth40k.bsky.social

Super Mario Bros. Wonder release three years ago! It's one of the best 2D Platformers on Switch or Switch 2. We currently don't know what new game Nintendo EPD Production Group No. 10 is working on for Switch 2.

I think one of the biggest challenges with covering fan projects like mods, ROM hacks, homebrew, decomps and recomps, etc nowadays is that there is now so much of it that it’s basically impossible to keep on top of things. Like what do you prioritise? 3d Melee? Galaxy GBA? Double Dash Retro CTGP?

Here’s an interesting oversight in Breath of the Wild. Completing the Thunder Magnet sidequest with a full armour inventory deletes the resulting Rubber Helm from existence. Ah well, at least you can buy a spare unlike the Champion’s Tunic or Thunder Helm…

So what happened to that single player Mario Kart Tour revival @getlucky12341.bsky.social mentioned? I know about ReTour and posted about it, but it seems the post about this other project is now gone and I can’t find the download anywhere else…

For #ScreenshotSaturday, here are some WIP custom enemies for my SMW hack. Can you recognise what they’re based on?

Isn’t it a ‘fun’ coincidence that Bluesky made a full tweet about their AI generated website creator but only bothered to repost the announcement here? Get the feeling they know how much their own users dislike AI and want to downplay it as much as possible…

God Dark Link and those other bosses look so good in the latest Ocarina of Time remake trailer!

Have to say, I loathe having to use ads on the Gaming Reinvented site, especially as even limiting them seems to have no real effect. Would be great to be able to depend on other means of making money, but just about everything feels really morally fraught.

This is kinda horrifying: www.oginstagram.com/ayoships/ree... The mobile game Block Blast is literally calculating how much ad revenue you bring and how much money it thinks you have, and making the game easier or harder to force you to watch them. Sadly I suspect other mobile games do this too

So apparently you keep the Fairy Ocarina in the Ocarina of Time remake. Also heard you can switch between the two in game. Guess Link doesn’t just chuck out of his friend’s gift right before he becomes an adult now… www.reddit.com/r/zelda/comm...

You can still softlock Mario Kart 8 Deluxe using this glitch in the latest update. Yes I sound like a broken record, just find it funny that this glitch seems immune to being patched.

Am I the only one who still doesn’t have the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion pack? Feels like everyone’s decided it’s worth it in the last few years. Eh, maybe I’ll consider it when I get more money.

Not sure what’s crazier: how quickly this project was taken down, or how casually someone got Mario Kart 8 ‘working’ as a browser game. I dislike the use of AI here, but still, this must be a nightmare scenario for game developers right now.

Guy on TikTok releases vibe coded Mario Kart 8 that somehow works in the browser window Redirects to this now half a day later

Anyone find it kinda interesting that Ocarina of Time arguably has the best versions of its dungeon themes? Other Zelda games have Forest, Fire, Water and Spirit Temples, and none ever topped the Ocarina of Time version. Let’s not even get started on Jabu Jabu in Oracle of Ages…

Yeah they’ve got a point with this one. The Digital Deluxe Edition was advertised as having all future paid DLC. Whether they like it or not. A second season pass is future paid DLC, so they’ve explicitly promised this.

VGC@videogameschronicle.com

A number of Sonic Racing CrossWorlds players who own the Digital Deluxe Edition have demanded that the $30 Year Two Season Pass be free for them, because Sega posted a tweet before launch saying it included "all future paid downloadable content". www.videogameschronicle.com/news/sonic-r...

For those folks here working on SNES homebrew games and Mario ROM hacks, definitely check out this guy’s stuff and commission them for your projects. They’re one of the most talented programmers around when it comes to coding in 65c816 assembly.

TIL that the final hours theme is officially named ‘Last Day’ in this game. It’s also hilarious how dedicated this game is to calling those creatures at Romani Ranch ‘ghosts’ when they’re clearly aliens lol. Even the soundtrack is in on it…
