What "Always look on the bright side of life" would be if transformed into a ponderous think piece.
Not a WaPo fan, but this is interesting and disturbing.
I wrote up a sort of worst-case scenario for the upcoming election and its aftermath. I feel like it should be obvious, but perhaps it isn't. medium.com/@cmcguinness...
Yay, but California would be so much richer if it wasn't a donor state to the tune of over $200 billion a year...
California's September revenue came in at a whopping $2.9 BILLION above forecasts. As our economy continues to grow, we will keep betting on the future being built right here in the Golden State.
Reportedly, Anthropic offers to let the government shut down its AI only if it kills 50 or more people. I'd like to say this shocks me.
OMG, Vance is turning into Foster Brooks! (FWIW, his character was just an act, of course)

I just donated to Ukraine at u24.gov.ua My donation is not large, but it feels important in this era of Trump selling our country, and Ukraine, out to the Russians.
Tourism is an important part of California’s economy. An independent California would be welcoming and hospitable to international visitors. See @votecnp.bsky.social
New in PN: Who wants to visit an authoritarian America? "Data shows the US on its way to being as unpopular a tourist destination as Russia, & for roughly the same reasons. In both countries, a tourist who runs afoul of the govt might spend months in a freezing warehouse without no legal counsel."
So, if nobody reads the list, nobody can know who is on it.
🚨BREAKING: DOJ dramatically escalated its confrontation with California election officials, explicitly warning that they could face federal criminal exposure if they count ballots from voters the Trump administration has flagged as potential noncitizens. www.democracydocket.com/news-alerts/...
Imagine living in a country with a sane immigration policy; This wouldn't be a problem. That is never going to be the USA, alas.
WSJ: nearly two-thirds of builders say immigration enforcement is impacting their labor force. Fewer workers available, higher costs given more demand for workers than available, and delays on projects. www.wsj.com/us-news/the-...
AI is an excuse, not a reason. It makes it sound like you're cutting-edge, not running out of money. But Kroger is laying off people as it is facing a $9 billion payout to Albertsons for the failed merger. Plus, Trump's eff'd up inflation so consumers are hurting, and that hurts Kroger in turn.
Kroger just announced the largest layoffs in its history, with plans to cut 3,000 employees as it ramps up use of AI. Reminder that Kroger has spent $12.3B on stock buybacks since 2019 and paid its CEO $14M last year — 417x its median worker's pay. AI is turbo-charging corporate greed.
OpenAI, which has been very busy illegally hacking other companies and countries, is shocked, shocked to find someone was bugging its conference rooms.
This is fascinating. First, that supermarkets were so exposed, then second that somebody was motivated to take advantage of them. There's more here than we know.
How irrelevant has journalism become when newspapers like the NY Times cannot state the obvious truth about the raid on Omar's home?

This is of course a horrible abuse of the press. OTOH, what the fuck did the media expect from their 10+ years of pretending to be balanced in covering Trump? Of not constantly pointing out that he's evil? Ignoring that he lies non-stop? That he and his cronies are all corruption all the time?
What legitimacy does a government have if we pretty much assume they are always lying and believe nothing they say?
Whenever ICE shoots someone, they claim the victim was "weaponizing a vehicle." Let's understand this in context. The far right has worked hard since 2017 to demonstrate that vehicles can be weapons, using them to murder people in Charlottesville and elsewhere. crimethinc.com/VehicularAtt... 🧵⬇️
We have always been at war with Eastasia
US warned the Ukrainians that Washington might cut off intelligence sharing with Kyiv if it will continue strikes on Russian refineries. The Americans also informed their Ukrainian counterparts that the US was set to lift sanctions on Russian diesel and that Moscow intended to lift its export ban.
The NY Times article needs some copyediting. I fixed it for them.

Just how incompetent are these companies?

The @nytimes.com totally misses the story here: the president is assembling a star chamber to go after Fed gov Lisa Cook, outside the bounds of any normal form of legal process, in order to gin up "cause" to remove her. It's a foregone conclusion that they'll find her guilty.
This is like the crazy aunt who insists her poodle is really a human. One cannot be cruel or abusive to AI anymore than you can to a rock.
This is barbaric. These people have no place in a decent society.
