I had a real strong stretch of writing my blog, and then just as quickly as I started I stopped. I vastly underestimated how much time it takes me to read enough that I want to write something and still have the time to write it. I’m still overcapacity, but hope to be back at it soon.

I sold cell phones at Best Buy when the first iPhone launched. We didn’t carry it, but you wouldn’t believe how many people asked if it was compatible with their allergy medication.

I still haven’t been meeting my personal writing goals, but I’m not gonna mope about it blog posts anymore. Just gotta write more.

Coyote vs. Acme 🍿 Peter Lorre stars as a MacGuffin in a maul-teasing, foul-conning farce about the lengths people will go to for the things they want. The film is a love letter to golden age cartoons and film. Exactly what a no-taste exec would want to kill. I give it 4 beep beeps out of 5.

Suggested watch for anyone who loves design, classic Apple stuff and creative process (a bullseye for me). In case you didn’t know, my blog’s logo is my own homage to Kare’s original icons for the Mac. youtu.be/YEvLKzsEw…

I love @densediscovery.bsky.social , but the best part about this wasn't the feature. A designer friend posted about it in our community Slack before I knew about it. Friends who hype your work are the best.

Many thanks to @densediscovery.bsky.social for featuring Blankie in today's issue!

When people say the Mac was weird and funny in the early 90’s, it’s stuff like this little utility from Altura Software that they were talking about.

mac-encoding on crates.io I’ve been working on some classic Mac projects but I kept tripping over text encodings. My toolchain for the projects is Rust and assumed there’d be a solid, maintained crate for this, but I couldn’t find one. So I made one that follows Apple’s official Unicode maps.

RIP Claude – Rands in Repose I tried writing with AI, but I quit immediately because they suck at it. LLMs are good at structure, that’s how they convince us they’re smart, but without empathy it reads hollow. If fear of watermarks make people write for themselves again, I say that’s a good thing.

randsinrepose.comRIP ClaudeI've used Claude quite a bit for both the upcoming new book and the next edition of Managing Humans. I wrote the entire book, but, as I've done for years, I've

Looks like I won’t be able to try Manna’s drone delivery today in Tulsa because I don’t live or work inside the very small launch area. Excited to give it a try when they expand it a bit.

My blog officially has a new name: birdwatching. The domain (b10g.xyz) is still the same. I’d been considering changing the name for about 4 years, and with all the other changes it felt like maybe the right time to finally do it.

The number one reason I've not published more on my blog was that I kept thinking it still needed something. Moving to Micro.blog is in large part a way for me to lower my own bar, and write more on my blog and less just on social media.

Why I moved to Micro.blog: https://b10g.xyz/2026/08/09/why-i-moved-to-microblog/ I’ve learned too late in my writing journey that wrangling your workflow will drain your capacity for writing and creating if you let it. I’m moving to Micro.blog because it has constraints I can’t control.

I moved my blog over to micro.blog and I’ve ported over my social replies-as-comments system with it. I’ll share more about why I moved and how I set this up soon, but any public replies to this will show up on my site here: b10g.xyz/2026/08/0…

I’m taking up blogging again because the alternative was sending my friends extra long text messages. They’re too nice to complain, but if I dump my thoughts into a blog instead I can send them a link they can give a thumbs up reaction instead. It’s a win-win.

I also want to give major thanks (ou, devrais-je dire merci) to @dandu.be for their « incroyable » deep-dive back in 2015. It was very helpful to see Bruce across all the different FCP versions. The only question I have left is if Bruce's Yak Bites were translated beyond English (but I assume not).

Bruce was actually part of FCP from the very beginning, spreading wisdom and confusion until he disappeared in FCP 7. At this point, he's been gone for nearly 2 decades now, but I probably remember him better than anything I edited on FCP back then. #Apple50

To me, Bruce represented the unserious side of Apple I loved so much. Sadly, that all started vanishing when the iPhone-era took off. A lot of old software was made for weirdos, by weirdos. I miss that, and I wanna do my part to fix it. I didn't understand it when it wasn't weird. #Apple50

Periodically, thought bubbles with "pearls of wisdom" would appear from its head, such as: “I'm glad it's getting weird again. I didn't understand it when it wasn't weird.” Another revealed his name: "You can call me Bruce the Wonder Yak" #Apple50

However, if you moved your cursor too close, Bruce’s eyes would get really big and he’d scurry off screen in a panic. To the uninitiated, you weren’t sure what you just saw or how you’d explain it without sounding crazy. It was like seeing the Macintosh-equivalent of Bigfoot. #Apple50

If you left older versions of Final Cut Pro running for 12 hours or more, you might come back to a small brown creature grazing a patch of grass on your timeline. There were other ways to intentionally trigger him, but this was the most fun one. #Apple50

It’s not for every use case, especially prod ones, but this package makes it easy to use the on-device #AppleIntelligence models without a separate API gateway or model installation. It just works. 🍎 #TypeScript #NodeJS #Apple #OpenSource

I don’t hold grudges against people, just kitchenware. The blender blade that nicked me. The Pyrex bowl without a lid that mocks me. The lone champagne flute I accidentally orphaned. They’re incapable of forgiveness, so I never forget.

Recently I read something, somewhere (don’t remember where) that stuck with me. I’m paraphrasing, but it said: “… the amount of friction necessary for growth...” or something to that effect. It was written so matter of factly on the way to another idea, but it contained multitudes of its own.

I realize this is not a new or novel take, but it was the first time it resonated with me. There have been seasons of my life when I avoided friction out of fear, and looking back on them I now see them as missed opportunities for growth. It’s okay to fear the friction/change, but not to avoid it.
