Our paper on the effects of weather during reproductive stages on Mountain Chickadee breeding success is published! We found that rain/cold during laying results in brood reduction. The effects of temperature on nestling mass differed between low and high elevation.🪶 academic.oup.com/auk/advance-...

Mountain chickadees rely on spatial memory to forage in unpredictable environments and on song to defend their territories. Watch #ProcB author Sofia Haley talk about research that suggests overall song output may be an indicator of cognitive ability: cassyni.com/events/Mw4c4...#ecology
More smarts, more song: male chickadees with better spatial learning and memory abilities sing more throughout the day: doi.org/10.1098/rspb...#ProcB#AnimalBehaviour
Why do we not see evolutionary change in heritable, fitness-related traits in free-living populations? @erikpostma.bsky.social &co use the #evolution of clutch size in great tits to show the importance of gene flow in explaining contemporary evolutionary change and stasis 🧪 buff.ly/ngAKH6r
We use the covariance reaction norm method (by @jsmartin.bsky.social) on 40 years of great tit data from Wytham Woods.
The natal-to-adult body mass correlation in this population is high on average (r ≈ 0.7) but appears to vary with temperature, rainfall, and density, particularly during breeding.
NSF just announced its GRFP solicitation due in October - deadline varies by field:

Now for the bad news...
* NSF estimates they will issue 1,500 awards, down from 2,500+ last year.
* NSF removed STEM Education and Learning Research as a Major Field.

Lifetime fitness (lifetime reproductive success) and annual survival are heritable and genetically correlated in wild female baboons! Moreover, nearly all of the genetic variance in LRS can be attributable to survival to first reproduction. Out at Evolution now: academic.oup.com/evolut/advan...
New paper - we show that in chickadees, males with better spatial cognition sire more extra-pair young and that when a female has an EPY, it is sired by a male with better spatial cognition compared to cognition of her social mate.

Researchers have identified superparamagnetic macrophages in the livers of rock pigeons to be crucial for magnetic sensing. The finding uncovers an unexpected role for immune cells in sensory perception and may fundamentally change our understanding of animal navigation.

New proposed OMB regulation, applying to all federal grants, requiring grant reviews by senior political appointees and re-emphasizes that "peer review remains advisory and does not replace agency discretion".

A U.S. federal mandate to make scholarly papers free to read could triple the government’s bill for publishing fees to $937 million by 2030—an increase most research agencies aren’t prepared for, says a report released by Congress’s spending-watchdog agency. https://scim.ag/3Q3y29F
May 23, 2006 is the hatch date of the world's most famous lance-tailed manakin. PXVm has starred in Netflix's 'Dancing with the Birds', and been highlighted for years by the Cornell Lab Manakin Cam. How do you celebrate such a momentous day? By dancing! Here he is today, with his current beta GSGm:

When trying to explain why female birds engage in extra-pair copulations/paternity, we mostly focus on the benefits.
But what about the costs? Should we not consider the downsides of the behavior we try to understand? 🧵

Just some snow coming to our high elevation field site next week, just as we were preparing to test our chickadees. Now we have to take a short break before 'diving' into all that snow.
