I still have plenty of things I want to animate within macrophilia. There are scenes I want to make, movements I want to explore, and stories I’d still like to tell. It’s healthier to treat it as a hobby rather than something my entire life has to depend on.

One of the nice things about 3D animation is that it can be collaborative. If I eventually have enough time and money to make better use of them, I can bring other people into the process and work together on bigger projects. That’s probably the most realistic way for me to keep doing this.

As the cost keeps going down, there’ll probably be more and more of that kind of content. Meanwhile, making high-quality animation by hand takes a ridiculous amount of time, money, or human resources.

And when you combine that with how limited the audience for something as niche as my work is, making it your entire life career is honestly a pretty risky bet.

As for AI, I don’t think it’s going to make remarkable things I personally want to make anytime soon. A lot of what it does is still based on copying, recombining, and rearranging things that already exist.

TST currently makes a little over half of what an animator at Pixar or Disney Animation might make in a year. But when you factor in how spread out my production time is, the cost of living, and taxes, I’d say the difference isn’t really that huge.

This has actually been a problem for me for a long time. I haven’t really been able to take a long-term creative job and spend years building up my fundamentals. And at this point, chasing the dream of becoming an animator is getting harder too.

Every year, more and more of my time goes toward family stuff and these everyday responsibilities. Last year alone, I spent more than seven months living at my family’s place instead of my own apartment.

Housework, work, taking care of pets, errands, and all the other little things have added up to what feels like 2–3 people’s worth of work. So yeah, under circumstances like this, I’m obviously not going to be making much art.

Lately, I’ve been focusing more on things around me, so I might be a little less active for a while. The YCH prey form for Sushi will be opening soon. If you have a 3D model, I’ll pick a few that can be used.

Depending on the responses, I may also commission some YCH templates for those who want to join but don’t have a model. The plan is to work on the animation at my own pace, and just charge a small fee once it’s finished.
