Common Tern Project

@commonternproject.bsky.social

Updates from the @ifv-whv.bsky.social's long-term individual-based study on common terns breeding at the Banter See in Wilhelmshaven; provided by me - Sandra. With a side of gull-billed terns from @gullbilledterns-de.bsky.social's conservation project.

Sometimes work can feel like work, but not last week, when I had the pleasure to visit Wangerooge to give a tea-time-talk about terns for the 18th Migratory Bird Days, organised by the Lower Saxon Wadden Sea National Park. 💙

We need your help - four of our satellite-tracked quail have gone missing in France! Any information would be interesting, e.g. if the signal comes from near a fox den, buzzard nest or hunting area 🦊🦅🔫 If you can recover the tag, we can re-use it - and you can name this quail 😉 Pls share widely 🇫🇷

A scene that stuck with me most, I would, however, not be able to choose. I found the atmosphere to be beautiful throughout, and the closeness to the protagonists convincing. A true joy to watch, even if the underlying message is a very serious one

Pictured, besides the lovely ambience: Bsc student Gina rocking the presentation of her first-ever conference poster, and me gratefully receiving the 2026 Hans-Löhrl-Award, but only as the face of the most wonderful team that turns the envisaged work into reality. Thank you! ❤️

We did our best but couldn't find this little fellow. Here are some pictures of what the habitat looked like. After an hour searching through the ferns, we saw no sign of it, or of any raptor nest for that matter. We are really sorry @commonternproject.bsky.social 🙏

I can’t believe I am writing this, but chick T99 chose another route than his dad L43, and whereas dad seems to safely be hanging out in Spanish Laguna de Gallocanta, the GPS track of T99 suggests predation in Portugal. Here’s the position: maps.app.goo.gl/qHsMCT8HUzWm...

It seems more accessible than the location of H36, so here I go again: do we know anyone in the Fontes area who would be willing to try and find the bird and/or tag and send us pictures and the device? We can cover costs for postage and a few kilometers.

I don’t know how easy it is to access the island with a canoe or so, but should anyone know anyone paddling in the area, would it be an option to check whether the bird and/or GPS device could be retrieved? We would be very grateful!

It is September and there are still a few Gull-billed Terns in NW Europe. During daytime, this bird is staying near Emden (D) and at night he is sleeping in the Dollard (NL). It is a male and he has a chick to care for. The frog he caught was too delicious to feed to his chick, so he at it himself.😋
