My latest McDonald's collecting trip haul is all MAC TONIGHT themed! I drove up to Toy Lair in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and came back with a giant in-store appearance costume and over 30 more Mac-themed pieces like signs, posters, hats and even a Doug Jones auto that references the collection!

In 1998, McDonald’s Brazil released a Halloween McNugget Buddies set. The same character designs were used with glow-in-the-dark bodies in Australia at the same time, but the Brazilian versions are much, much rarer.

It's officially McDonald's Halloween Pail season! Which of the classic lineups was your favorite: 1985/86/87 (all pumpkins), 1989 (first witch and ghost) or 1990 (glow-in-the-dark ghost, neon witch and pumpkin)? I'm team 89 all the way, but all of these are legendary.

McDonald’s in Germany may have only got five toys when they offered the Halloween Monster McNuggets Happy Meal in 1993 (no pumpkin), but at least they had a translite sign design that put the US version to shame!

McDonald’s in Germany may have only got five toys when they offered the Halloween Monster McNuggets Happy Meal in 1993 (no pumpkin), but at least they had a translite sign design that put the US version to shame!

In 1992, McDonald’s brought back Halloween Pails after a one-year experiment with "McBoo Bags." This lineup featured lids with detachable cookie cutters. Somehow, I’ve owned these for 34 years and have still never made Halloween Pail cookies.

One of the earliest McDonald's translite signs is this circular, vacuform Jack-o-lantern. Not just a cool vintage Halloween item, but also one of the centerpieces of my whole McDonald's collection. (1967)

Here’s a countertop display from 1993’s NICK OR TREAT Halloween promotion. A lot of McDonald’s contests have come and gone over the years, but a Nickelodeon Haunted House Party sounds like one of the best prizes ever.

While it’s not *technically* a Halloween item - it seems like a good time to share Popsicle’s Fear Factor Pop-Ups. There were two different flavors: sour cherry with gumball eyes and watermelon with sour lemon blood. (2006)

28 years ago: The Ronald and Pals HAUNTED HALLOWEEN Happy Meal, featuring six characters with masks and a free pack of Spooky Nerds! Bonus points for the rare inclusion of "Iam Hungry" as a character in the set. (1998)

1994's Flintstones movie inspired McDonald's to re-brand as ROC DONALD'S, highlighted by a McRib combo dubbed the "Grand Poobah" Meal, complete with a themed cup and french fry boxes - the perfect thing to pair with a Bedrock Mug!

The FUNNY FRY FRIENDS Happy Meal doesn’t seem to get the same nostalgic fanfare as its McNugget Buddies or Changeables counterparts, but it was an incredibly fun line of characters. Here's the German translite sign promoting the set:

The McWorld campaign was essentially McDonalds' version of jumping on the "xtreme" bandwagon of the mid-90s and produced some memorable commercials ("hey, it could happen"). This sign used to be bolted to a countertop display, usually advertising the latest Nickelodeon Magazine.

HAPPY MEAL HISTORY: When the concepts for the McDino Changeables were proposed, one toy was going to be a Filet-O-Fish, not the Chicken McNuggets box. Given that the FOF was more of an adult thing, this toy was pulled before distribution and changed to a yellow McNuggets design.

In 1992, the second Real Ghostbusters Happy Meal was released, this time with a bike accessories theme. Here are two different translite signs from the promotion, one from the limited regions that offered them in the US and the other from Germany!

It's well documented that Mac Tonight was the KING of driving dinnertime sales... but did you know that in 1988, select markets handed out MAC MONEY during dinner, redeemable for a free breakfast sandwich on a future visit. These three coins came from that promotion in Ohio/Pennsylvania.

In 1974, select McDonald's in Cleveland OH gave away a set of McDonaldland Character trading cards promoting local educational landmarks. This set features some of the earliest giveaways of each character... it even refers to Grimace as "THE GRIMACE."

Here's something I bet you've never seen before: original 70s McDonald's slide transparencies from their advertising agency used for promotional items like translite signs - check out the PUNK'N MAKINS and ONION NUGGETS photos!

As a vintage McDonald's guy, I'm often asked: "what your favorite set of Happy Meal toys of all time?" Even though I've seen and owned em all, the answer is always the 1993 Halloween McNugget Buddies. The best designed, most nostalgic toys there's ever been.

In 1985, McDonald's in St Louis tested a Transformers & My Little Pony Happy Meal. What seemed like a sure-fire hit turned into a flop, mainly because the toys didn't transform. Due to its limited distribution, items from this promo are highly sought-after, especially the box.

One of the coolest McDonald’s Halloween promos was NICKELODEON NICK OR TREAT. If you said “Nick sent me” at the counter, they’d give you a free pack of these Amazin Fruit Gummy Bears. (1992)
