weird how the leftover chili doesn't get hot when you turn the wrong burner on thank you, induction range, for just turning yourself off because there's no pan on the burner and not burning my house down

my question here is: if i write in "josh turek, bigoted transphobe" does that vote count for him while expressing my strong disapproval of his whole deal?

Erin Reed@erininthemorning.com

The elections are on next Tuesday, and so much is at stake, including the soul of the Democratic Party when it comes to transgender people. I am asking you to leave a very small number of races blank in which a Democrat has embraced extreme anti-trans hate. I make my case here.

i keep meaning to write a letter to the editor encouraging democrats to vote in primaries for candidates who are *actually proud to be democrats* and not the ones (like our big statewides this year) who mortgage the long-term health of the party by running as "not that kind of democrat"

Bruno Dies@brunodias.dev

It is, ultimately, damaging your ability to accomplish things long term or to win elections long term because you assume that you can't change the framing of the conversation even though changing the framing is a tool that's right there for you to grasp. It's incompetence. Malpractice.

when's the last time you saw a republican talk about "extremism on both sides"? never i always want to ask for examples from the dems who do this. name the left-extremist electeds. name the sensible policies they've blocked in our republican super-majority trifecta. i'll wait

absolutely insane to me how allegedly smart people thinking about politics can convince themselves that "publicize as much actual existing wrongdoing by your opponents as possible" somehow weakens your hand for the next cycle "you can never trust these people again" is a good (AND TRUE!) message

jamelle@jamellebouie.net

scott galloway and jessica tarlov held an event here in town yesterday where “don’t impeach or waste time on investigations because ‘28” was the consensus position of the panel. so yeah, this is something to anticipate.

trump, like mcconnell, is not going to do anything that he cannot spin as a win for him and a loss for dems if all your legislation is DOA when he vetoes it, what else is congress supposed to do for two years? this feels downstream of a bad case of presidentialism -- article i doesn't matter

i was going to say democrats need to learn to be hypocrites, but that's not quite right they need to get comfortable being accused of hypocrisy. and that's actually just one example of the ultimate prize: recognizing bad faith and responding appropriately

OBAMA: When I was president, all these Republicans are all deficits, deficits, debt, debt. You got to do something about it. And now—$40 trillion—Crickets. Somehow deficits only matter when a Democratic president is in office

"where was this energy when republicans were looting and pillaging the u.s. treasury? why is it only when democrats want to do something constructive that 'how will you pay for it?' becomes a concern for you?"

elizabeth warren understood that if she gave savannah guthrie the sound bite she wanted at that 2020 debate -- "taxes will go up" -- that her campaign was DOA "costs will go down" was directionally correct, but she needed to attack the premise. "why are taxes the only costs that matter to you?"

the next dem trifecta should authorize a wwii-sized rollout of clean energy, including an entirely rebuilt grid to be completed before the next presidential election and when anyone comes crying about the trillions you're adding to the deficit, you tell them to suck shit

you can mention these investments in the future of every man, woman, and child in this country (and the world!) will more than pay for themselves but that has to come after 90 seconds of "you didn't say shit about the costs of the iran war or trump kids' mining in kazakhstan or alligator alcatraz"

one weird trick for being a 1000x better politician? never ever ever grant the premise of a question from a republican or the media el-sayed and tommy's little tit-for-tat went viral because he doesn't grant the premise of the question that he has dual loyalty because of his faith

went to vote early and the line was out the door -- one lady who was leaving said it had taken her 45 minutes, a man shortly after said "well the line hasn't gotten any longer in the last hour" -- so i had to bail to go gotv knocking people seem exercised!

i actually don't know that i had ever heard this shit-weasel talk before. tell me you are totally unconcerned about anyone besides yourself without telling me he's not remorseful. he's not somber. this is not the selling of hard realities and tradeoffs. he's gleeful at being a naughty little imp

Jake Grumbach@jakemgrumbach.bsky.social

A helpfully clear exchange here Hasan: "So your argument is that [Minnesota ICE protesters] should stay at home because immigration is a salient issue for Donald Trump. Opposing ICE is only going to help Trump. Wait until we win the election in 2028." Yglesias: "Yes that is what I would have said"

<michael-hobbes-making-fun-of-someone voice> "i'm a contrarian and some people don't like it!" hope hasan mentions dems are now more trusted on immigration and asks him how that happened and whether that means it's still off limit as a campaign topic, since it sure sounds like it talking about aes

EXT.: a black suv with a loudspeaker repeatedly blaring "we don't ride bicycles in iowa" nearly hits several cyclists before rushing head-on at a pair of children biking across the street. cut to black the moment before the impact

Eric Rauchway@rauchway.bsky.social

The RAGBRAI folks are gonna be so mad

on-screen text and voiceover: "If you own a bike, Joe Mitchell can't see you." "If he can't see you, how can he represent you?" "Joe Mitchell. Dangerous for your children. Dangerous for Iowa."

hey, it's not any worse than the pac ad that uses johnny carson as an example of iowan resilience or the one that mentions the good candidate over top of the scary music or literally any of turek's

"trump fired a gun, striking and killing a pedestrian on fifth avenue, raising concerns that he may have violated the law against murder" THEY DID THE THING. JUST SAY THEY DID THE THING. JESUS FUCKING CHRIST I AM SO TIRED OF THIS ABSOLUTE COWARDICE AND CORRUPTION

The Washington Sun@washingtonsun.com

The State Department has asked some foreign service officials up for promotion who they voted for in the 2016, 2020 and 2024 presidential elections, raising concerns the agency is violating a federal law that bars politicized personnel decisions within the nonpartisan ranks.

wooooooooow one of those "how did no one involved go 'wait a minute'" productions

dear democratic political candidates: stop being cowards and transphobes and LEAD, the thing you are ACTIVELY PUTTING YOUR HANDS UP TO DO, or get entirely the fuck out of politics forever

Katelyn Burns@katelynburns.com

Alaska voters are absolutely SICK of hearing about trans athletes.

it's wild to me that the ability to say "explain it to me like i'm a child" is actually a superpower in the world of journalism because so many in the field just parrot whatever they're told lest they seem unsophisticated for not understanding i have zero shame in saying i don't get what this means

I can express it in those terms and follow that explanation because I'm a fucking economist if someone doesn't have some level of education in this shit it's very weird to expect them to get it

i still work in comms and not only will i not push something out if i don't understand it, i ask myself if the intended audience will understand it. and if not, it gets plain-language-ified even further every journalist should read munroe's "thing explainer" and channel that energy

i believe 80% of this is down to the fact that nintendo is a video game company that moonlights in other areas that benefit the main business, while microsoft and sony are tech companies that moonlight in the video game business no mba jagoff is telling miyamoto how to do his job

given how often republicans engage in projection -- either to preemptively muddy the waters around something they're doing or because they assume everyone is as corrupt as they are -- statements like this should serve as batsignals for places to start digging

Mike Waltz alleges that "the communist party in Cuba has been working with antifa and a number of other progressive leftist groups to sow chaos in our inner cities ... they're doing it with the violent environmentalist movement and pro-Palestinian movement"

"cuba pays antifa to stir up trouble in inner cities" ok so you're saying that russia pays the proud boys to stir up trouble in inner cities, maybe? let's start checking some financial records and see what sticks out

i don't know that i've ever read a good account of how bad-faith actors exploit the physical conventions of journalism when your brain sees that screenshot, it knows the big text is the thesis and the smaller text is a supporting argument... but what does "mother of five" have to do with anything?

The other category of coverage is *extremely* implausible first-person accounts from estranged parents. According to this woman, her son cut her off after she was mildly rude to his fiance's family a single time. There's no way this is the entire story. www.goodhousekeeping.com/relationship...

what does squeezing five separate humans out of your clownhole say about your parenting ability? zero, actually but hardly anyone will stop to question it because it's in the "supporting evidence" slot. "she's reliable, she's a mother of five!" is what that subhed wants you to think

i'm reminded of the ancient viral video of the two babies jabbering at each other as if in conversation. the rhythms are right, so it's easy to interpret it as them talking to each other, even though it's jibberish this is the same thing. the rhythms are right, but the content is jibberish

it is mentally exhausting having to thoroughly parse every single thing you see. this is why you label people/sources as "trustworthy" or "untrustworthy" and only when something is really jarring does it break through that simple filter for you to go "wait a minute"

i keep responding to fundraising asks like this with things like "SAD SACK. NO." not that anyone sees them or it does any good, but it makes me feel better
