i watched the speech last night and wanted to reach out and let you know my heart was hurting for you and your sweet girl. i am praying so hard for you both right now that you feel safe and supported through all of this. know that i’m in your corner 🧵

and sending all of my love and prayers and doing what i can to support ❤️ ill offer mass for you both today…i love you guys and am with you!” And THATS on Christian love. JH, if you’re reading this, I love you and you amaze me. Keep being the amazing woman you are 🫶🙏

When I started my new job 2 years ago, it included many elements that were new to me. One is policy work. I have strong political opinions, but am not yet great at advocacy. Quite honestly, the scene intimidates me, because I never feel the smartest in the room. 🧵

One council person was like I agree with you but voting against you anyway. I get they have to make the laws for everyone but why tell me you don’t agree with how you’re voting? Because if they had voted no, it would have been a tie, and it would have died and we would have won. 🧵

I spoke last night at a town council for work. I was well prepared, passionate about the subject, and had done research on the council members. It didn’t go how I wanted, but I am on record with my statement, including science-based data, and now now I know I can do it. 🧵

An open letter to Iowa Governor, Kim Reynolds. You don’t know me, you don’t owe me anything. I haven’t lived in Iowa for 20+ years. I’ve lived in Kentucky, Colorado, and now Indiana (I’ll never consider myself a Hoosier, whatever that is). Until this weekend, I’ve always considered myself IOWAN. 🧵

Iowa has, sadly, become “the old country”. A land my family will hear about, but maybe never get to experience through their own eyes. I will always have people in Iowa. I will always cheer on Iowa and buy Iowan. Tell stories about Iowa with love. But I can no longer consider myself IOWAN 💔💔💔

How can I, as a mother, safely and consciously show my family the lands and people that fully shaped me into the woman I am today? How can I take them to see the rolling hills, cheer on my beloved UNI panthers, or just take in the wonders of the cities? Meet the so-called Iowa Nice People? 🧵

This child, without knowing it was a thing or the words for it, knew they didn’t match their body. They were scared to tell us, but we’ve raised our kids with open honesty. We helped them find the words. We took them to a therapist to work through these feelings. But this is our reality. 🧵

Unfortunately. That all came to a screeching halt this weekend when you chose, despite your constituents voices, to end civil rights and protections for trans people. I have a child that is trans. We did everything “right”. Religious upbringing, Catholic school, very little internet exposure. 🧵

The family that lovingly and without question accepted me when I was adopted as an infant. Friends who have known me since preschool and are like sisters to me. The village that surrounded my parents through unfathomable loss. The old church ladies that prayed for me on my wedding day. Iowa nice. 🧵

We eat at my old favorite haunts (that are still open), never missing a slice at Casey’s, a Maid Rite or a Tasty Taco. We grab Anderson Erickson, Grazianos, and Gino’s products for the trip back to Indiana. Most importantly, we visit our people. People who would give the shirt off their backs. 🧵

When I’ve visited my parents, family, and life-long friends, I’ve enjoyed taking my kids and husband to see my memories of growing up in Iowa. SEC Taylor stadium, Iowa State Fair, Blank Park Zoo, Effigy Mounds, Botanical Center where we married, Grotto of Redemption, the Sculpture Park, and more.

I cheer for Iowa celebrities. I collect cow print things even! I come from a family of farmers and immigrants with rich cultural history, but think Des Moines is one of the greatest cities in the country. Big city convenience, trending scene, clean streets, nice people. Iowa Nice as they to say. 🧵

Iowa is who I am. When I am at events or parties or even the store, I inevitably meet someone from Iowa. In fact, I met a fellow Iowan at Edinburgh Castle last fall. Like any good Iowa girl living in Indiana, I cheer for Caitlyn Clark, despite being a life-long Cyclone. I support Iowa businesses. 🧵

That reporter really looked at the president of a country being battered by an invading force and asked “but what was he wearing”

His current job duties include: -preside over state senate & break ties if needed -succeed governor if needed -oversee several agencies: -dept of ag -community & rural affairs -housing authority -tourism -counterterrorism -local biz He is NOT the bathroom police. #micahbeckwith

No spending today, with a few exceptions. My teen got her wisdom teeth out this morning, so we filled some drugs. Thankfully, I transferred to a local shop recently. Grabbing her a smoothie and heading home.

My 16 year old just got her wisdom teeth out. Shes hilarious coming out of anesthesia. When I asked if I could film her, she flipped me off 🤣 Now she just keeps saying “I love you guys” like a drunk girl in the bathroom.

The town I currently live in was a stop on the #undergroundrailroad. The historical society is presenting a seminar soon about the #kukluxklan, which originated nearby. I truly worry it’ll be an instruction manual, and not a warning. #indiana

I wish I could express how sad this makes me. I haven’t lived in Iowa for nearly 20 years, but I always consider Iowa home. I am an Iowa girl. My parents, family, and some of my best friends are there. I also have gender diverse children. I cannot, in good conscience take them back to visit. 💔🏳️‍⚧️

Good bye: target, Starbucks, chick fil a, McDonald’s, meta, and more. Cancelled all Amazon subscriptions. Working on spending less, and when I do, local/small/ethical. Some of my favorite brands: Raygun for sassy tshirts, Blk & Bold Coffee, Sephora, Costco.

Literally the only profession coming out ahead in this administration is lawyers.

Letters went out to federal workers this morning stating they were fired due to poor performance. However, all employees had been rated as “exceptional” performers by their supervisors. Please keep these records and pursue wrongful termination claims. Let the lawsuits begin.

You are up to date.
