You know the Darth Plagueis book is so good when 90% of the worldbuilding from this book covering like 100 books or more comes from that one book

It’s funny how big the gulf is between my knowledge of Marvel vs DC. Playing Cosmic Invasion and I not only know every character and every re-color’s comic reference But when Firestorm shows up in Injustice I’m like “literally all I know is Alex Ross allegedly hates him”

I don’t think I realized just how much I didn’t vibe with the book until I just started “Legion” by William Peter Blatty on a whim and now I’m listening whenever I get the chance — which never happened with “On Basilisk Station”

Halfway through the book and if I didn't need a tenth book to round out my annual "Top Ten" I'm not sure I'd finish it, which is very rare for me. It's hard coming off several books (fiction and non-fiction) where I couldn't wait to get back to it. This just feels like a chore.

Yeah, VisionQuest, police famously let camera crews right up close to the body of murder victims and TV news channels show that footage on air whenever there's a murder

I can't be too mad because like one minute later an AI attempts to do a troubleshooting exorcism to get rid of a hack and that's the kind of shit I want right in my veins

This is not like a big societal change or anything but I'm old enough that I'm still always stunned by how advanced Bluetooth technology is. Airpods came out ten years ago and it still feels like magic to me.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

Okay but lowkey the woman he’s arguing with does almost accidentally have a good point that Mass Effect 1 in particular treats every woman as an object of sexual desire. The entire design ethos of the Asari is “obviously we need beautiful blue alien girls”

This post is unavailable.

TBC I’m not remotely puritanical. I don’t have a problem with this, but it’s funny to argue Mass Effect’s approach to sexuality is mature and relationship-driven when the main female villain looks like this

Like, just compare the way Mass Effect 1 designs it’s exclusively female-coded alien race in comparison to the other more genuinely alien designs of the ones with exclusively male models

The four gras vote in DC feels like the moral equivalent of “should people be allowed to continue kicking puppies” and turns out there’s a LOT of people like José Andrés on the “kick puppy” side

I know he’s a popular dude but this argument is so stupid. Governments can walk and chew gum. You can fix stuff and pass progressive policy. “Think of the starving children” are you feeding them foie gras?

“It shouldn’t be a priority” is so dumb. These people know full well the government regulates an unimaginable number of things daily. It’s not like everyone in the affordable housing department is suddenly swapping to the animal cruelty beat

Really trying to enjoy “On Basilisk Station” because on paper it feels like everything I want in a book but the page after page of technobabble and exposition dumps are wearing my patience down.

My three career fields have been comics, journalism and (briefly) videogames, and every single day waking up to the news in those industries is like this

I know everybody’s justifiably mad about the closure but I think the EA blame is a smokescreen for a lot of leadership failures in-studio. Saw the same with Destiny. You’re talking about a studio with massive back-to-back flops whose only upcoming game was still in pre-production

But at the same time it’s been over ten years since they put out a good new game. The last decade’s been defined by a series of high profile flops.

And I speak of spiritual suffering! Of people seeing their talent, their work, their lives wasted. Of good minds submitting to stupid ones. Of strength and courage strangled by envy, greed for power, fear of change.

A Gen Z colleague told me he's watching the Back to the Future trilogy in one minute, vertically cut increments on TikTok -- I feel like I've died and gone to hell

Now that most of the bugs have been ironed out, Andromeda mostly stands shoulder to shoulder with the others. The cardinal sin is there’s functionally only one alien race, but the Angara are one of the best in the whole series and Jaal is a top tier companion.

And I'm glad we didn't end on another Shepard-centric Mass Effect game because I can't imagine that would have felt nearly as sincere.

I feel like this is awful, entirely preventable, but also not super surprising. Mass Effect is still one of the most recognized game franchises and it’s kind of stunning they wouldn’t at least get the new entry through the finish line.

Somebody asked on a show recently, "should companies be political?" and I wasn't really sure in the moment, but watching devs like this take a righteous stance on an issue does push me back toward "yes, they should; 'we're not going to get political' is usually a shield for cowardice"

Reading “One Day, Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This” and there’s a great little tangent partway through just to talk about how shitty Red Dawn (and its remake) are

Daniel Warren Johnson and Mike Spicer's 'Beta Ray Bill' miniseries is five issues long and they make every single page feel breathtaking.

I have a habit of getting four stories removed from a comic I meant to read because we went back to something else leading into it. Like reading "Absolute Carnage" because it leads into "King in Black" which has one "Hellfire Gala" crossover issue, which is what I was reading in the first place.

One morbid side effect of having a bunch of friends die this year is my first thought looking at a nice picture my mom took of me is “oh nice, I hope they use this at the funeral”

I was just remembering my Russian professor called me дурак (Durak), meaning "Fool". Her brother visited from St. Petersburg and when I gave him a tour he said "You should know, it's a term of endearment. She called me that growing up." "Aw, so she likes me?" "She is still calling you an idiot."

Was talking Shakespeare with folks and it always turns into a rant about how much I love Richard III. Love all the plays with nuanced characters and moral complexity, but it's just so goddamn fun watching medieval Skeletor scheme and backstab his way to power like a cartoon villain.

"I can add colours to the chameleon, Change shapes with Proteus for advantages, And set the murderous Machiavel to school. Can I do this, and cannot get a crown? Tut, were it farther off, I'll pluck it down."

Also fun fact with this monologue, the first half is the "Now is our winter" monologue from the start of Richard III but halfway through it seamlessly splices in the fantastic monologue from Henry VI -- a great writing in an otherwise mediocre play liberated here.
