My pronouns are nerd/geek. I hope I'm an ally to many and an enemy to few. I can't believe bsky ran out of more interesting people to invite.

Pro-tip: For personal interactions in my world, "yes" is not enough. "Yes" can occupy the middle ground between "don't want" and "want". Folks talk about "consent" as if it's synonymous with "desire". It's not. You either "want" something, or you don't. Period. That's my personal minimum.

An interesting post and probably a good idea from a business standpoint, but it's something #discord server admins and users will probably want to watch out for. Looks like the "opt out" button may already be available, but it is "opt out" if your server is discoverable. discord.com/blog/making-...

Sometimes, I miss my turbo diesel car for its mileage and range. Then, I look up at the gas station sign and shudder. At anything like price parity, it was amazing. Close to 20 MPG higher than my current car and a larger tank. I did over 950 miles on one tank. But at nearly $7/gal? #NoThankYou

VT: "Welcome to Vlad's gym! Have you read/initialed the zero-tolerance policy?" M: "What?" VT: "Did you see the line of guys being slowly impaled on weight bars along the driveway?" M: "I thought that was a new workout fad." VT: "No, they couldn't keep their eyes, hands, or mouths to themselves."

I can sympathize with #AI. I too was someone's "Oh, crap! Someone beat me to this topic, so I have to start my dissertation project over from scratch!" moment back in the day. 😇👿

I'd vote for a candidate who promised to eliminate all political ads as soon as I cast my vote each year. I'd also vote on the first day of early voting every single time. The STFU Act has a nice ring to it... 😇👿

Maybe it's a symptom of 2026 (or that other number that ticks up every year), but the closest I get is buying a home in a walkable neighborhood in a city with great transit and starting to donate to more causes. Maybe I already have #TooMuchStuff and need to de-frivolize my life...

Peter@notalawyer.bsky.social

question for the audience: if you were ultra rich (let’s say $25M), what completely frivolous thing are you buying?

I can't speak for every county in #Illinois or every day from now to regular #voting day, but I was in and out yesterday in a matter of minutes and if there were any scary "poll watchers" lurking about, I didn't see them. #GoVote #IVoted

I used to say, "I've been on the internet so long that I don't care if you have a body as long as you have good ideas." Seems like I should amend that. I don't mind if you're a brain and eyeballs floating in a jar as long as you started out human. Then, I'll take your ideas more seriously...

I hate it when I agree with Hinton on anything, but here we are. Stopped clocks and all that...

HuffPost@huffpost.com

Geoffrey Hinton, a famed computer scientist who quit Google in 2013 to speak out on the risks of AI, took on the “senile” president’s takes on the industry.

I never watched "Person of Interest" until now, but I'm a little bit hooked. Like a lot of speculative fiction, there are bits that are dated, but there are bits that feel really [redacted] [redacted] [redacted] familiar right [redacted] now.

Holy smokes... SLU comes through with some interesting numbers. Not all #DataCenter designs are the same, and not all produce the same kinds of noise. I'd bet good money that folks would be happy-er at least with that level of mitigation... www.facilitiesdive.com/news/45-foot...

facilitiesdive.com4.5-foot-thick walls needed to absorb data center noise: researcherUltra-thick walls aren’t practical, so setbacks should be at least 1,500 feet, says Kasey Fowler-Finn of Saint Louis University.

I've never been much of an individual-stock investor (much less advisor), but this puts a pretty sharp point on my current "there's nowhere in the #AI value chain where I would feel comfortable investing (for anything but hitting an IPO bounce) today" advice... 😬 www.wheresyoured.at/dead-money/?...

Fascinating stuff, especially the workforce development aspects. I can't even count the number of areas where the talent pipeline has run dry and needs to be refilled in order to turn the U.S. (back?) into what we need to be...

#PeopleDebt can be a huge part of #TechnicalDebt. Thinking of a team that over 30ish person years (4 people x 7.5 years) sent exactly 1 person to 1 conference and 0 to any refresher training.

Just saw a bug report showing that changes they could have adopted (and were offered a lab to test) are live in the wild and would have saved that company more than the entire $5M they needed to save from one year's #IT budget.

With all the talk of hiring processes, I think of past teams where we should have quizzed applicants on their ability to quote The Princess Bride at length. We could teach the technical stuff. It's the PB quotes that mattered more.

When Sam Altman first started talking about #AI needing trillions of dollars of infrastructure investment, I wrote him off as a crank. "We can't scrape up $2T for our roads and bridges! We can't even do high speed rail in this country!" Wow, do I feel like an idiot now... 🤦‍♂️

The money will go toward 31 projects across 26 states that are expected to produce more than 23 gigawatts of additional electricity capacity — enough to power 16 million homes. https://to.pbs.org/4AvhLgb

President Xi looks on knowingly... Waiting for the price to drop enough for him to just buy America outright. Low enough that he knows we'll throw in Taiwan as a deal sweeter...

AgonyFlips@agonyflips.bsky.social

Band name and album title, anyone?

Gotta love a consumer research survey where every single proposed name for the product is pathetically generic and doesn't fit the concept at all. Did #AI generate all of the suggestions to name itself? 😇

Exponential ick factor... 1) A YouTube video posted by a16z. 2) Talking with / about Greg Brockman (OpenAI). 3) Who says AGI has arrived. It might not be a singularity, but it's a gravity well of ick so deep that I'm pretty sure my head would implode. I think I'll avoid that one...

There is no setting the bar too low for these people. They will always find a way to dig a deeper hole for themselves and all of us if they can. Any bets on whether #DataCenters that "bring their own power" will be released from all such regulations too? 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮

Is it too much to ask that Vanderbilt scientists invent a time machine and send some of their recent football success back to the '80s??? Sure, they could use it for other things, but ... 🤷‍♂️

Is it just me, or does "let's make it even easier for the U.S. to remain a car-centric and car-dependent culture in the face of overwhelming climate change impacts" sound like a bad policy take? 🤔

My morbid curiosity didn't overcome my revulsion, but with "advice" like this floating around on YouTube, it's not a wonder that there are a ton of "men" wandering around confused. AYFKM? If that's what you're thinking about a hug, you deserve to be in the bad friendzone or beyond. 🤮

Can we not aim higher? There's not a moment in my personal time on this earth that I would suggest for a "what will it take to get the US back to how things were in [year x]?" kind of question. That's just blue-tinted MAGA. 2024 ain't it. 2016 ain't it. 2000 ain't it. 1976 ain't it. #AimHigher

On this Labor Day, let us remember that it wasn’t the CEOs and billionaires who saved us during COVID-19. It was the janitors, nurses, cleaning crews, grocery and food workers with their hard, often invisible labor.

Fascinating stuff... Seems like the outsiders coming in were starting with a lot of the stereotypes about Tennessee... Oops!
