Ryvus has no curiosity. He's deeply religious, and things are the way they are because that's the way God made 'em, and it's not for him to question that. Ryvus and the plot are frequently at odds because he can't adapt his thinking or understanding fast enough to keep up with the world.

Tell me about your #AwesomeCharacters As a curious person, I can't help but wonder: If your character curious? Are they always seeking answers? Driven to uncover the truth? Is it relevant to the plot? #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

I had a really good week for my gaming collection. I snagged a replica copy of Pokemon Crystal for free, and bought a second PS2 for 60$. Then a friend gave me a Gamecube as payment for some help I gave them. Then my little sister gave me a Switch 2 for my birthday!!!

I bet you didn't know you needed anthropomorphic swine wrestling and a magical adventure in your lives. Trust me, you do.

Ryvus was raised as a child soldier. He was going to grow up to be a killer. Fortunately he was saved from that life and now just has dreams of being normal and having a family. He has no regrets about how things turned out, but his training is sometimes hard to shake. #WriteSky #WritingCommunity

Tell me more about your #AwesomeCharacters What did your character want to be when they grew up? Did they daydream about a future career or future adventures? How close did they get? Do they regret it or are they happier this way? #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

Ryvus is fastidious about cleaning and organizing. His place is sparse but meticulously tidy. Mark never seems to find the time to clean. Her spaces are piles of clutter and things she's working on that she just hasn't gotten around to putting away yet but she was going to get to it, okay???

Tell me more about your #AwesomeCharacters How does your character feel about cleanliness and order? Are they neat and fastidious? Do they have a specific grooming routine? Or are they a bit of a slob? Does it bother those around them either way? #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

Owning the physical media is important to me, But I also get a rush of nostalgia looking at them and remembering the times when I played them as a kid.

This post is unavailable.

Animals detest Ryvus. During the war, he wasn't allowed anywhere near the horses or they would spook. He wasn't allowed on the hunting expeditions either for much of the same reason. He's sour over and decided some time ago that fine, he doesn't like them either 😤

Tell me more about your #AwesomeCharacters Is your character good with animals? Do they interact with them often? Or at all? Do they avoid or fear them? If your character could choose to have any animal as a pet/companion, what would they choose? #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

Ryvus' kind don't need a lot of sleep, which works great for him because he sleeps too lightly and can't fall asleep around others. If he runs too long on no sleep, it affects his concentration and therefore his magic. Mark still has nightmares about the war, but sleeps better nowadays. Coffee helps

Tell me more about your #AwesomeCharacters Let's talk sleep! Is your character good at sleeping? Can they fall asleep anywhere? Or do they need very specific circumstances? Does sleep or lack thereof ever cause them problems? #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

Ryvus has been trying to ignore the outside world for most of his life. He's just starting to catch on that the few people he cares about are part of that outside world, and stuff that happens out there will affect him both indirectly and, more recently, directly.

Ian Haramaki 🏳️‍⚧️✨@cometkins.bsky.social

What problem is your MC ignoring until they absolutely must address it? #WritingPrompt

Ryvus was a medic during a bloody two year civil war. There's very little that he hasn't seen, and blood, gore and death don't phase him. Mark has seen her fair share too back then and accepted it then as normal. Now, during peace time, it's no longer an acceptable outcome and it upsets her more.

Tell me more about your #AwesomeCharacters How does your character handle blood, injuries, and gore? Are they squeamish? Faint at the sight of blood? A seasoned pro who doesn't let it bother them? Are they ok with it in some contexts but not others? #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

This was such a fun read. Want an off-the-wall concept that questions our relation to media? This is the book for you.

Daniel Aegan—Danger Park Era@danielaegan.bsky.social

Three friends are trapped in their favorite 80s sitcoms, but it’s not all laugh tracks and dramatic speeches. The bodies are piling up, there’s no way out, and any wrong move may cause the end of the world. For Shannon, Mark, and Jerry, there is no “to be continued”. Safe Haven drops on 3/31

Ryvus has no interest in making friends and seems to go out of his way to piss people off. For the most part, he has a superiority complex, and feels that most humans are beneath him. But he also is bad at emotions in general. Even when he wants to try, he can't relate to people well.

Tell me more about your #AwesomeCharacters Does your character make a lot of enemies? Are they the affable type who gets along with everyone? Or do they have a tendency to rub people the wrong way? Do they do it on purpose? Or is it usually accidental? #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

Ryvus learned under Tennicus, one of the most powerful magic users to ever live. He's not as creative or skilled as Tennicus, but he just about can't be beat in raw power. Over the years, Ryvus' endurance has dramatically increased, and so has his patience and emotional control.

#Febchantment Day 24 For your characters who can use magic, how were they trained? Did they attend a magic school, or study under a mentor? Were they self-taught? Were they just born knowing it? Bonus: how have their skills developed over time? #writingcommunity #writesky

In this book we have Ryvus, one brother; Jarrick, and his father Tennicus using magic. We notably also have the other brother; Danny, and a new elf named Oz, NOT able to use magic. In this book, magic becomes a liability and suddenly the powerful magic users find themselves as liabilities.

#Febchantment Day 23 Which members of your cast can wield magic? All of them, or only specific ones? Or perhaps none of them? For those who can wield it, how has this ability impacted their lives? How has it shaped them into the people they are? #writingcommunity #writesky

For most of the series, it's been an important tool in the background of the story. A special skill that certain characters had that allowed them to solve problems. The cultural importance has shaped the world around them, though, and in this book it becomes a dangerous liability.

#Febchantment Day 22 For our last week, we're talking a little more about the role magic plays in your story, as opposed to the world in general. First, how important is magic to your plot? Is it just an incidental feature of the setting, or is it a key story element? #writingcommunity #writesky

Ryvus? Terrible. Unless it's from his father, Tennicus. If so, then he'd grumble and argue and walk away, but he'd be thinking about what Tennicus said for days. His stubbornness and insistence that he's always right has been a Major Thing in every book.

Tell me more about your #AwesomeCharacters How is your character at taking advice? Are they open minded and ready to hear people out? Arrogant and resistant to suggestions? A bit too ready to change for someone else? Does it ever cause them problems? #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

Ryvus is working that out currently. He's never been considered as a viable romantic or sexual partner before (cultural reasons) but figures he'd be happy in a traditional relationship. However, the person currently courting him is a trans woman, and he's not sure how to label their relationship yet

Tell me more about your #AwesomeCharacters What is your character's romantic/sexual orientation? Is this something they are still figuring out for themself? Is it important to them? How does it affect their journey/plot/their life? If at all? #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

Elven culture and religion revolves around magic. The humans, who can't use it, are considered inferior. Elves born without magic are considered pitiable and mercy-killed as children as soon as it's discovered. There is a caste system based on one's magical abilities.

#Febchantment Day 19 Discuss some *major* ways magic has shaped the culture. I'm not talking little everyday things (that's for tomorrow). I mean BIG PICTURE. This could be anything from technology, prejudices, government structure, the landscape itself... anything! #writingcommunity #writesky

For elves, it's a natural born ability. Any risks associated with using it poorly is a lack of attention on your part, like missing a step and twisting your ankle, or pulling a muscle at the gym. Plus, magic is associated with god, so it's a way to feel closer to Her.

#Febchantment Day 18 Why do people want to do magic in the first place? What benefits do they get from it? What makes magic worth the trouble or risk for people, especially if it's extremely difficult and/or dangerous? Do they even have a choice at all? #writingcommunity #writesky

Healing magic is considered the most powerful. It's a gift of life, something that Mother Earth alone controls. For someone to be born with healing magic is incredibly rare and considered holy. It's not even a magic you can learn; you have to have it naturally.

#Febchantment Day 16 This might be a tricky question, but in your opinion, what is the ✨️most powerful✨️ use of magic in your system? Of course, this all depends on how you define "powerful"! It may not necessarily have anything to do with how much damage is dealt... #writingcommunity #writesky

There are two types of magic for the elves. One is the basic form that all elves have, much like the Force. It can be used offensively or defensively. The other is rarer and only 1/100 have it. These elves can use elemental magic, and to great effect.

#Febchantment Day 15 This week we're discussing magic's role in the culture. So let's start with different approaches to magic. Are there multiple different types of magic, or different philosophies? Are there multiple schools or disciplines? How do they differ? #writingcommunity #writesky

I've been wrestling with this myself lately. But I keep thinking of Captain Picard "With the first link, the chain is forged." We got to where we are in the world by not caring about the fire until it was at our front door.

This post is unavailable.

Ryvus can blast a bigger fireball than most, but can't control a fire that's caught hold on something. Tennicus can. There are so many ways to use magic that there's no real way to master all of it.

#Febchantment Day 12 What does it take to be considered a "master" of your magic system? Is it about the range of your techniques? The difficulty level? The amount of knowledge in your head? Your ability not to set yourself on fire? Or perhaps there IS no "mastery"? #writingcommunity #writesky

Ryvus is mostly based on my husband; the prickly bastard that he is. Mark is loosely based on myself.

Tell me more about your #AwesomeCharacters Where do you get inspiration for your characters personality? Yourself? Fictional characters? People you know or celebrities? It just comes to you? Has someone you've met ever reminded you of your character? #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

It's a physical toll on the body. It takes stamina, like any heavy physical exercise. Use too much and you get something called 'empty-well', much like dangerously low blood pressure. And pain can interrupt concentration, so magic users are vulnerable to disruptions while casting.

#Febchantment Day 11 What limitations did you put on your magic system to keep it from becoming too OP? Is power in short supply? Do spells take a physical toll on the body? Note that this is about magic done RIGHT. Day 13 will be about when magic goes horribly wrong! #writingcommunity #writesky

No words required, and technically no actions either. Some people use flourishing hand gestures to look fancy, and some spells that require a lot of force might have someone lean into the spell or make a follow-through after a throw. The really dangerous people give no indications at all.

#Febchantment Day 10 How is magic actually performed? What kinds of speech or actions are needed to execute a successful spell? An ancient incantation? A hand sign? Martial arts movements? Or is it enough simply for the caster to THINK their spell into existence? #writingcommunity #writesky

The only thing someone needs for magic is a natural ability to channel it, then concentration, stamina and creativity. Focus is incredibly important, as a lapse in concentration can collapse a spell and leave the user vulnerable.

#Febchantment Day 9 Let's talk magical tools! What does someone need to do magic in your system? An arcane focus (e.g. wand, staff, orb)? A book of spells? A musical instrument? A bunch of obscure ingredients? If you have magical companions, they would count here 😁 #writingcommunity #writesky

Ryvus is a pacifist who doesn't want to fight. He is perfectly capable of destruction however; his magic is powerful and he was trained by one of the best to ever live. Mark is an excellent marksman and pretty quick on the draw, too. She also boxes for fun and packs a mean right hook.

Tell me more about your #AwesomeCharacters Let's talk fighting styles! How does your character fight? Do they wield weapons? Magic? Are they a brawler? Or do they have a more sophisticated fighting style? Or are they a pacifist who would never fight? #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

Without naming your job. Tell me something you say over and over again at work. 'What is that you're eating? It better not be shit, I swear to God.'

Ryvus prefers the forest to anything else. Any forest will do. He prefers to be alone with nature and with his thoughts. Mark's favorite place is her office. She's surrounded by people who like and respect her, she can do the most good there, and she knows her place in the world when she's there.

Tell me more about your #AwesomeCharacters What is your character's favorite place in their world? A place they find peace, or excitement, or joy? Is it a type of place (forest, mall, etc) or somewhere specific? Is it somewhere they go frequently? #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

It's not fully understood. It's a natural force, and there's a genetic component to those able to channel it. Humans have been trying to use science for decades to figure it out (spolier- someone already identified the genetics involved and reproduced it artificially)

#Febchantment Day 8 This week we're digging more into the nuts & bolts of your magic system! So let's start with the source. Where exactly does magic "come from" in your world? Where/when does it originate? Does anyone know for sure, or are there only theories? #writingcommunity #writesky

I'm too lazy to go fetch the snippet itself, but there's a moment when old man Tennicus pulls down a rain cloud and demolishes an enemy blockade. The force is described as being crushed by a waterfall, and everyone who witnessed it was very impressed. You'll have to take my word for it ;)

#Febchantment Day 7 It's Snippet Saturday! Share a snippet from your story which features a particularly impressive or awe-inspiring use of magic! If you don't have any scenes written yet, feel free to share ideas for a future scene featuring impressive magic! #writingcommunity #writesky

I wanted something that wasn't a deus machina to all my problems. I also wanted an explanation as to why not everyone could do it, and why there would be some science in this world if people used magic. I don't know where exactly I pulled my inspiration, it's been so long.

#Febchantment Day 6 Tell us about why you developed this magic system! What drew you to the concepts? Why did you choose to make it the way you did? Were you inspired or influenced by any other works? #writingcommunity #writesky

Ryvus fills up his free time out of necessity for survival, living off the land as he does, but will happily enjoy not having work so that he could meditate and pray. Mark would die of boredom (and yes, doing someone is one of her ways to keep herself busy) She doesn't like her own thoughts.

Tell me more about your #AwesomeCharacters How does your character handle boredom/idleness? Do they enjoy a lazy day doing nothing? Do they need it, sometimes? Or do they always want to be doing someone, and idleness makes them restless and unsettled? #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

Only elves have magic in my story. They are all born with a certain ability to harness and use it, and some few are born with a genius-level ability to command it. Either form takes years of practice, training and mental discipline to use in any practical way.

#Febchantment Day 5 Tell us about who can wield magic in your world! Is it available to everyone, or only a special few? Is it a gift you're born with, or a skill you can learn? Is the knowledge gatekept in some way? Don't forget to read & interact with others! 😁 #writingcommunity #writesky

There are three main ones that get used where magic is concerned. 'Kalis' means gift, and it's the term used for elemental magic that some elves are blessed with. 'Empty-well' is the sickness that comes from magic over-use. 'Ti-kapanis' means 'false elf' and it refers to those born without magic.

#Febchantment Day 4 Vocab time! Tell us about some important terms we need to know to understand your magic system. Obviously, make sure you include the definitions! 😁 As usual, interpret the prompt however makes sense to you! Don't feel limited only to conlang words. #writingcommunity #writesky

Magic in my world is a natural force, and elves can channel it something like the Force. However. Certain individuals are born with an ability to harness that same energy as elemental forces. It's a skill highly coveted, and they selectively breed for it.

#Febchantment Day 3 What is the central concept of your magic system? E.g. Elemental magic? Music magic? Name-based magic? Something else? (Note: this isn't the "source" of magic - that's Day 8!) If you already answered this previously, feel free to go into more detail! #writingcommunity #writesky

The antagonist is charming and friendly and generally well loved. He's got some strong morals though, and they end up clashing with everyone else's. He doesn't want to oppose the main crew, but they're in his way and he's not going to let them stop him.

Tell me more about your #AwesomeCharacters Antagonist day! Are they likeable? Would it surprise you if your antagonist was someone's favorite character? Were they written to be cathartically hateable? Sympathetic but flawed? Somewhere in between? #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts
