If you have infosec or software engineer friends who are even remotely affected by this week's security findings, buy them a drink or a treat or something. They are going through some SHIT.

No, I definitely _didn't_ have that ADHD panic moment of "Did I actually pre-order that book, or did I just think I did?" *quickly checks store order history* "DATE PLACED: Apr 23, 2026 3:54pm" Phew!

Putting myself together to head down to Books Are Awesome to sign the Backwoods Banshee preorders! I'm so excited for y'all to read this one. I'm particularly proud of it, and Adam. My golden boy has seen some things, survived others, and is definitely growing up.

Do we do GoFundMes here? Anyhow, better than the AOIR listserv. The municipal rec soccer club I volunteer with is raising money for a tent. Fees in kid's sports are getting out of hand, but rec leagues are a shining spot of access and affordability. Help us out? www.gofundme.com/f/supporting...

One big myth of #OpenSource is that you have to have the ability to code to help. While you need developers, you also often need people who can test, organize, write documentation, help with support, and more.

So, I took a quick look into this. Even google's "helpful" AI search tool can unearth the fact that this is ductape and spackle window dressing. Even simple code analysis reveals an unguided agentic SDLC process that is guessing at solutions instead of intelligent guidance.

Holy shit. Someone has decompiled the Adobe suite, rebuilt it in Rust and released it as open source. Either all software is dead or the US copyright laws are about to receive an update. getartcraft.com/apps

This is your occasional reminder that generative "AI" in particular could have been developed on public domain materials and/or licensed and compensated works but the major players intentionally, methodically and systemically chose to steal labor from working creative folks instead

I'm especially thankful for those of you that are finding Rogue Community College. It's my little book that could and I love that more of you are finding it.

There it is! The final card for the Backwoods Banshee preorder campaign through Books Are Awesome! I've sent everything, including the glow in the dark sticker, to the printers. There's still time to preorder from www.bookareawesome.net to get your paper or hardback personsalized.

20 years. 20 years since my life veered off a cliff. 20 years since I woke up from the world of innocence as a child and started the path of truly growing up. 20 years since we lost the anchor to the chaos. 20 years since I lost the one who showed me what true unconditional love was.

Hi! I'm Tug. I'm a stay-at-home-dad to 2 teenagers & 1 irredeemably cute Keeshond who posts about games, sports, and said cute Keeshond. I also make content occasionally over on Twitch (twitch.tv/tugboet) which often consists of me being awful at a game and chat lambasting me for it. Welcome in!

Going to start writing my first piece for my new 'blog' shortly. I've really been wanting to improve my writing skills for some time. Time to stop procrastinating.

I ended up having more extended thoughts on Dolly Parton over on Facebook and I thought I would share them here as well.

Oh man. I do not know how I'm going to tell my kid. Who's love for reading is a _direct line_ from Dolly's imagination library. Who, upon learning about her, immediately put her up there with Taylor Swift as a role model (she wants to be a performer) Gutted. RIP Dolly. Thanks for it all!

@drslayton.bsky.social Doing my pre Backwoods Banshee Adam Binder Universe book listening, and my brain fixated on Vran's "I am what I'll be when the Undertakers are done with me". And thought, wait, that's a straight connection/foreshadowing to RCC instead of allusions to death, isn't it?

SO EXCITED!

I'm running final proofs on Backwoods Banshee today. My acquiring editor says it's my best book yet. There's also another preorder campaign with Books Are Awesome in Parker, CO. Jake has started work on the character art cards. I'll share examples as he wraps them booksareawesome.net/backwoods-ba...

*New chat request* Yay! *Opens chat* *Reads "Hi! I'm [Your Name]..." * Man, the scammers are getting lazy a.f. in this day and age of AI, if you can't even get a simple string replacement correct, and you leave "[Your Name]" in the copy, you don't need to be scamming. Get outta here....

Finished my first listen of @drslayton.bsky.social s #TheSilentPathsOfNight Bravo! I really enjoyed it! Especially the little Easter eggs here and there. And can't wait to see how book 3 unfolds! Now to obsessively listen to both books until I feel I got everything down.

Rogue Community College definitely is one of those awesome "band of misfits" books. I can't give it justice in a few words without spoilers, but I loved it!

David R. Slayton (He/Him)@drslayton.bsky.social

This month I'm hoping that more people discover Rogue Community College, my book about a magic school for everyone who needs it. I love all of my paper and pixel kids, but this one is special to me. Its audiobook is also on sale at chirpbooks for $2.99: www.chirpbooks.com/audiobooks/r...

Fun fact: North Carolina still hasn’t recovered from hurricane Helene, and Trump wants $2 billion to give people who smeared shit on the walls of the Capitol.

Actually it is good when unqueer people relate to and appreciate queer art, as opposed to the norm where they look at the cover, say "that's not for me" and then nobody makes any money or earns any prominence in queer art.

Kind of interesting how much hostility I'm receiving for, as I only can, wrestling with I SAW THE TV GLOW through a non-trans perspective. For its nailing of my extreme displacement as a yellow kid wanting to be white not trans. I'm not a good enough ally. I'm not doing it right. Not for me. Got it.

I am highly anticipating this followup to "Dark Moon, Shallow Sea". While I've already pre-ordered my copy, hop in and enter this giveaway for yours! You won't be dissapointed!

David R. Slayton (He/Him)@drslayton.bsky.social

Times are tough and books are pricey, but if you're on Goodreads my publisher is giving away twenty-five copies of the Silent Paths of Night! www.goodreads.com/book/show/24...

Oh hell yeah! So excited for october!

David R. Slayton (He/Him)@drslayton.bsky.social

Would you look at that? The cover for Backwoods Banshee, Adam Binder #5! It's out October 27, 2026 wherever and however you read. There will be a preorder campaign at booksareawesome.net/book/9798228... If you'd like it personalized and with character art and other goodies.

The Los Angeles Book Review says: "The Silent Paths of Night plunges the reader into the gloom and dread of treading the trails on a moonless night while sensing an unknown presence behind you. Slayton’s latest work pushes beyond fantasy into dark thriller territory."

(Also, fantasy as a genre outsold science fiction by about four to one, and romance outsold fantasy by nearly two to one, so there's some perspective for you.)
