Earth averaged about 5 heat storms a year in the 1960s, the largest of which covered 6% of the planet and lasted for 46 days. The average today is 102 heat storms per year, the largest of which affected 85% of Earth’s surface. Just turn up the AC the deniers say. newrepublic.com/article/2170...

Sánchez has been Prime Minister here since 2018, his third term started in November 2023. Shall we say that his successive governments' capacity to reverse the flow of wealth from the bottom to the top of the class system has been 'underwhelming'. He speaks very well though.

This new electoral vídeo from Pedro Sánchez is quite something. Standing in front of Guernica defending the anti-war stance of his government, limiting military expenditure, denouncing the atrocity of Gaza. English subtitles.

Second, I knew computers affected the development of SCM; that seems obvious. What I didn't realize is that logistics, and inventory management in particular, directly affected the development of *computers*. All three early database models were designed to store inventory data.

Pretty much nails it: 'software engineers have spent the past 40 years writing vulnerable, dogshit software. LLMs are easily above the bar needed to break into said software.' LLMs themselves being examples of the same, obviously.

The chance to keep global warming below 1.5°C with no overshoot is gone. But urgent action can still limit the overshoot and bring warming back to 1.5°C by 2100. Current policies, however, put the 🌎 on course for up to 2.8°C this century. New #EmissionsGap Report: https://ow.ly/SNHX50ZZz8l

Venn diagram of those that refuse AI becuase of its negative impact on society and the climate and those that refuse tourism for the same reasons.

'Many members of the Rust project and community find value in AI; many others feel that its negative impact on society and the climate are severe enough that no use is acceptable.'

I think many organizations would benefit from an LLM policy that's similar to what Rust is putting forward here. Proactive compulsory disclosure in particular is something that would prevent a lot of time being wasted. blog.rust-lang.org/inside-rust/...

Note here that the problem with LLMs isn't that they cannot produce 'polished PRs'.

Forgot to add - the only technology that's new here is the computing/guidance part. The tech change is that tiny computer chips with more navigation computing power than the most sophisticated 90s missiles can be ripped out of an old iPhone.

I plugged my cheapo Pixel phone into my cheapo UGREEN docking station for the lulz and nearly feel off my chair - Android's new Desktop Mode I discover quite by chance and blimey, it's pretty amazing to experience. The holy grail of convergence just round the corner, finally?

Late to this one, as always, but Google's new 'Googlebook OS' was released less than two weeks ago, described as a fusion of Android and ChromeOS. So yes, it does seem as though the convergence dream (mine, at least) is not yet dead.

Ah yes, the detail I didn't mention—that Googlebook OS has Gemini baked into its roots. AI-saturated convergence? No thank you very much (another tech dream put up against the wall and shot).

Excellent essay, well worth a read: 'While there is so much debate about what AI can and cannot do for humans, there is too little talk about what it’s doing to humans.'

Equator@equatormag.bsky.social

The billionaires warning that AI could end humanity are the same ones lobbying to write its rules. In a major new essay, Arundhati Roy argues that artificial intelligence is capitalism’s final destination www.equator.org/articles/aru...

'A useful takeaway is that when Linux first appeared, Microsoft was already a large corporation with over eight thousand employees, while the software that would become GNU/Linux was being built by a tiny community measured in individuals or perhaps tens of active contributors, not thousands'.

I see the pivot-to-ai blog has written about this project here: pivot-to-ai.com/2026/10/13/t... I'll leave evaluation of competing claims to my sophisticated readers' own judgement (not commercial software, toolset explicit, 'IN DEVELOPMENT, EARLY ALPHA' clearly labelled).
