Can people stop reposting this fucking graph? These are GLOBAL ANNUAL TEMPERATURES. That's not even remotely the same thing as summer temperatures. These were warm years GLOBALLY, not necessarily hot summers anywhere on Earth. Please have better standards than the wankers who spam denier memes.

John Clarke@johncke.bsky.social

These results fall into the category of 'overwhelming evidence.' #GlobalHeating

For context it's extremely rare for Goudhurst to win the day in any scenario, let alone a major heatwave. No doubt the severe drought leading to extreme desiccation in the forested area that the station lies in is defeating the natural forest cooling effect that it usually enjoys.

CryoA303TM@cryoraptor.bsky.social

OMFG GOUDHURST MAX (Frittenden's value was discounted it seems)

"it is the source of the Heatwaves in Europe and around the world" No it isn't. It's significantly contributing to global warming, which is significantly intensifying heatwaves when they do occur. El Nino does not cause anything directly outside of it's immediate region.

BladeoftheSun@bladeofthes.bsky.social

El Nino continues to strengthen in the Pacific, the strongest one ever, it is the source of the Heatwaves in Europe and around the world. But in December when it peaks is when it will have the worst effects, we will move straight from heatwaves and droughts to storms and floods.

London August record tied, second-hottest August day on record nationally. Not impossible that another station like Pershore has gone or still will go even higher, but the 38.5°C record from 2003 is probably safe. Still an absolutely incredible reading.

Temperatures provisionally reached 38.1°C at Kew Gardens, making it the hottest day of the year so far. This is the second time this year we have reached 38°C. The only other time this has happened twice in one year was in 2022. It also makes it the 5th hottest day on record.

It'd been known the Earth was spherical about 2,000 years before their time

In 1519, five ships left Spain to sail west to the Spice Islands. Only one returned, 18 survivors, and proof the Earth is round.

Less than a degree to the record now. Save for an extraordinarily early peak, it's starting to look quite likely that Aug 2003 should be preparing it's resignation speech. Wouldn't actually rule out a 39°C reading or two still, but that's far from guaranteed.

Temperatures have now provisionally exceeded 37°C 🌡️ Before 2026, the UK had recorded 37°C or higher on only six occasions. This year alone, we've already reached that mark three times.

Today is now provisionally the hottest August day since 2003, and also hotter than any day on record before 2003 (1990 doesn't count). I think 39°C is unlikely to be reached now, and if the record is defeated it will be by a single decimal or two, but 38°C still very plausible.

Assuming Burlands Farm isn't tweaking, we have now tied August 7th 2020 for the hottest August day since 2003. This is also a three-way tie with 07/08/20 and 06/08/03 for the third-hottest August day on record.

I mean, maybe? It's still quite some distance above Wisley, but it's just within acceptable bounds. Not sure what's going on re: the core area today. North of London into the South Midlands was forecast to see the hottest conditions, but now it's looking like it's going to be south of London...

I think Burlands Farm may have to be discounted today - Unless we're seeing a delay in other locations reporting, this is way too far ahead of everywhere else to be considered genuine.

It's happening I think temps of 35.2°C outside of the core area at 11:40am are conducive to a favoured spot in the core area (like my nominated Woburn) touching 39°C later on in the afternoon. We'll see what's going on at 12.

And so it begins. My preliminary prediction for today was 39.2°C at Woburn, but that may be a bit too high to reach now from these 11am temps. All depends on whether we see some intense superadiabatic warming in the next few hours over the desiccated ground.

What would usually have been a very hot day felt unexpectedly pleasant due to the extremely low dew points and early stages of declining insolation. 32.7°C is quite an over vs the forecast, so it wouldn't surprise me if the August record is under serious threat later next week.

Hellthrow breaks the 35°C barrier. Bear in mind that Hellthrow is now heating more slowly and near it's peak, and it STILL managed to hit 35°C. Writtle and Santon Downham further east still have at least an hour of full-power heating to go. I wouldn't rule us recording a top 10 hottest day entry.

To record one of the ten hottest days on record, we must reach at least 36.5°C, which would tie August 3rd 1990 and July 19th 2006 for tenth. Knocking 1990, but especially 2006 out of the top 10 would be majorly symbolic of this July, which is currently expected to be the hottest on record in Eng.

Fuck off Burlands Farm If it's not surging then there's a decent chance of it reaching 37°C by late afternoon, with the reiteration of course that Burlands Farm tends to peak fairly early at the 3pm window, so even if it reaches 35 - 36°C by then there's no guarantee it goes any higher.

ok someone tell Burlands Farm to chill. I know it's a bit of a microclimate but even with that in mind it's a bit outside of the designated hotspot today (more East Anglia area), so I wouldn't rule out station error at this point.

I wouldn't be surprised if we go as far as seeing a 37°C in East Anglia tomorrow, with how desiccated the ground is.

London & Southeast🔅@thesnowdreamer.bsky.social

Wednesday is shaping up to be a very hot and sunny day across most of England we can anticipate a max of 35C near London. The NW/SE divide is very strong in Glasgow tomorrow afternoon will consist of persistent rain and pitiful 15C high.

The best way to bring down the welfare bill is to introduce a real living wage, stop the privatisation of the NHS so less people are left chronically ill, and revoke the pension triple-lock. But that would go against all of the party's vested interests, so instead we're back to scrounger-bashing.

This isn't good news and would almost certainly lead to a Con-RefUK coalition if translated to electoral results. Luckily this is completely meaningless anyhow. No snap election is coming for obvious reasons and Burnham will crash and, well, I think the punchline there is obvious, long before 2029.

Summer heat is set to return? It never left Met Office. Stop downplaying the last month of extreme weather we've experienced.

Summer heat is set to return this week🌡️ Temperatures will climb across many areas before easing again towards the end of the week Take a look here for more details 👇

To us northern hemisphere dwellers: Remember that the southern hemisphere macroclimate is very different to ours and they generally have less neat and predictable seasons due to greater oceanism, unique geographic quirks and the fact that most southern hemisphere land is in the subtropics or higher.

To be completely fair (and I don't want to undermine the severity of this): The previous hottest day on record looks like it also occurred in winter. In fact a lot of the hotter nights seem to have actually occurred in the "winter". So this happening in winter may be a climatic quirk.

I've never seen anything like it. Salta, Argentina, has just recorded its hottest night on record during the climatologically coldest time of the year. The minimum overnight temperature did not fall below 26°C (78.8°F), pulverizing the previous monthly record by 7°C.

Well here I am actually commenting on a post about condoms. My life is one massive dick joke come full circle.

That is true, but the adult industry is one of the few that is directly threatened and attacked by the corruptive forces. Wealthy right wingers generally don't tend to like contraception and want any excuse to move in on it, so it's in the industry's interest to be as robust as possible.

Nah, this is him trolling. He knows it's about transistors (well he probably doesn't know what they are), but he's deliberately lying about it to troll liberals. And BlueSky Liberals fall for it hook, line and sinker again, and miss the forest for the trees. It's all deliberate.

Doug Aoki 青木定夫@nantanreikan.bsky.social

And yet, still not as stupid that those who voted for him.

Some much-needed moisture for some I imagine. Can't say it looks like any is on it's way to the South East anytime soon. July is looking likely to be one of the driest months on record here.

Isolated slow-moving thunderstorm cells have developed across mid and north Devon and north Cornwall ⛈️ These could give locally torrential downpours, frequent lightning and 20mm or more of rain in under and hour this evening, before decaying later.

One more thought on this before I go: It seems like the Met Office needs some basic PR training. They make so many, in my view, rookie mistakes when it comes to public relations. Get some Gen Zs who speak fluent Internetese in charge of the social media accounts and schedule.

This graph doesn't well capture that we're still on for another 30 - 31°C maximum today, maybe even 32°C. Wrong time to post this; it should've been tomorrow when temps will drop a bit (esp. overnight).

Spain will absolutely murder this Argentina squad at the final. We only lost because we gave up after the first goal. It could have very easily been us in the final.

A change to slightly cooler weather is now underway 📉 Winds switch to a northerly direction by Friday with parts of Northern Ireland and western Scotland seeing a notable drop in temperatures. Conversely, a warmer day to come on some North Sea coasts as the wind backs.

Hurn "the Hurnea", eastern Dorset saves the 30°C run yet again. Looks like tomorrow and Friday will see 30°C again, after which temps will noticeably drop. Even after that though, daily maxes will be considerably above average, especially in the west. This has August 1995 written all over it.

THIS. I get so sick of the "vaccines are a victim of their success" shit. It's a load of shit. Yeah sure it doesn't help that people aren't visibly crippled by polio and measles anymore. But that isn't why people are antivaxxers. It's because people now live in alternate realities with alt facts.

Jennifer Shin - WTAF@jennifershin.bsky.social

I'm a boomer and have millennial and gen-z daughters who understand why we have vaccines and believe in them. It's not a generational thing. It's an intelligence, critical thinking, feelings over facts thing.

And that. Given the heating curve, if it wasn't for that mist in the east this morning we probably could've hit mid-30s again today. I think the 30°C readings are set to continue through to Friday, so it seems we'll probably just miss out on 2006's run, and 1976 comfortably survives on all counts.

Today marks the 10th day in a row where somewhere in the UK has recorded 30°C or higher 🌡️ This is the most since 2006, when we recorded 14 consecutive days 👀

We should have learned that you can’t manage a public health crisis by ignoring it. Politicizing science and weakening disease surveillance doesn’t make threats disappear, it only makes us less prepared to respond.

This was obviously made at least a day in advance, because it's definitely not going to be 30 - 31°C in London or anywhere at 3pm, or at any time today outside of a few western spots if ideal heating conditions persist late.

Sunny and warm for most this afternoon, still breezy in the south ☀️ Some low cloud towards eastern coasts, feeling cooler here ☁️ The chance of a few showers in the far southwest 🌦️

1976 will remain undefeated. For fuck's sake, what will it take to finally defeat the boomerwave? Hotter again from tomorrow (even though it seems kind of pointless now).
