He’s suave, he’s handsome, he's mysterious... all-knowing, all-seeing… and his best friend is a large black bird. No, not Sam Spade, it’s THE AMAZING MR X! Take a walk on noir's supernatural side at #TheNoirCollective watch party on WED, 10/28, 8PM ET/5PM PT. Link: archive.org/details/the-...

Repost of last night’s #NoirChecklist for the morning #NoirAlley watch of #TheHouseOnTelegraphHill, but realizing I forgot one important item: -Postwar trauma (but not for a soldier)

#NoirChecklist for #TheHouseOnTelegraphHill: -First person narration -Switched identities -Creepy old house -Creepy governess -Creepy hubby -(Chinese) nightclub number -Nifty San Francisco locations -Weird Dick Basehart -More references to other films than That's Entertainment #NoirAlley #TCMParty

If you enjoyed tonight's #NoirAlley, join me on Wednesday as I host a special spooky season #TheNoirCollective watch party of THE AMAZING MR X! Check it out WED OCT 28 at 5PM PT, 8PM ET, and see noirmeister cinematographer John Alton really cook! #TCMParty

OK, I don't like to be a conspiracy theorist, but as regular #NoirAlley viewers know, Eddie sometimes slips some wry political takes into his intros and outros. Was he censored? 🤔 #TheHouseOnTelegraphHill #TCMParty

The moody cinematography in #TheHouseOnTelegraphHill is by the versatile Lucien Ballard, who shot many a classic noir– including THE KILLING and MURDER BY CONTRACT– before shooting many a classic western, including TRUE GRIT and his groundbreaking work on THE WILD BUNCH. #NoirAlley #TCMParty

The exteriors of #TheHouseOnTelegraphHill used the restaurant Julius' Castle– actually atop Telegraph Hill and closed since 2008, but recently slated to re-open– with the aid of some skillful matte shots to make it look more like an Italianate mansion. #NoirAlley #TCMParty

Tonight's #NoirAlley selection is also know as "REBECCA gets SUSPICION in the GASLIGHT of Telegraph Hill" #TCMParty #TheHouseOnTelegraphHill

The grocery store in #TheHouseOnTelegraphHill was an actual neighborhood corner store for many years before finally closing a few years ago. As of last year, it was vacant and for lease. #NoirAlley #TCMParty

If the front yard of #TheHouseOnTelegraphHill looks familiar, it's because it's the front lawn of Coit Tower (now paved for parking), also used as Nick and Nora's house. #NoirAlley #TCMParty

#AfterTheThinMan is my favorite of the series because it has some great 1930s San Francisco location shots, like Nick and Nora driving down bustling Market Street and up their driveway-with-a-view– actually the approach to Coit Tower, the Art Deco landmark that sits atop Telegraph Hill. #TCMParty

Chris is correct, Point Lobos at Land's End, out beyond the Golden Gate, is where they sent the signals from that gave Telegraph Hill its name. #TheHouseOnTelegraphHill #NoirAlley #TCMParty

OK, I was just greasing up the #NoirChecklist machine with its special oil of deceit, thinking I'll have a good long verbose Eddie intro to #NoirAlley to get ready, and suddenly the Fox fanfare is blaring at me and we're in a concentration camp. #TheHouseOnTelegraphHill #TCMParty

Great tracking shots by ace cinematographer John F. Seitz in the documentary-style sequence of multiple tramps boarding the train in #SullivanTravels #TCMParty

Interesting that the ideal director mentioned repeatedly in #SullivansTravels is Lubitsch. Cinematographer John F. Seitz was in a way the link with the great German master, as he was the favorite cameraman of both Sturges and Lubitsch protege Billy Wilder. #TCMParty

So, if food is visible in the stomach of #TheInvisibleMan for an hour after he eats until it's digested, then what about the ummm, er... by-product of the digested food... #TCMParty

It seems Clarence the Angel had a bit of experience with maniacal guys running amok in an otherwise sleepy little town, even before he saved George Bailey from that bridge leap... #TheInvisibleMan #TCMParty

I'm thinking the Monty Python crew saw #TheInvisibleMan before writing umpteen sketches where a British constable enters saying "'Ere, what's all this?" #TCMParty

How appropriate to come home after a long week at work and turn on #Frankenstein, just in time to see the Monster testing out his toddler-tossing skills… since that’s often what I’d like to do with some of the people I work with. 😬 #TCMParty

Next WED at #TheNoirCollective: With the spooky season upon us, join me- and noir’s greatest shadow slinger, John Alton- as we slink into the world of supernatural noir to meet…THE AMAZING MR X! Is he assuaging an attractive widow’s grief… or exploiting it? Find out on WED OCT 28, 8PM ET, 5PM PT!

In my line of work, you end up doing gigs in some odd places, but at least you sometimes meet interesting co-workers… #Freelancing #Video #TV #FreelanceLife

That stunning closing scene on the lake at sunset probably clinched #LeaveHerToHeaven cinematographer Leon Shamroy's third of four Oscars. #TCMParty

It was a clever bit by Hackett and Goodrich to have "the big reveal" gathering be a baby party with hoodlums, a call-back to an early scene in the film with "Creeps". #AnotherThinMan #TCMParty

Woody Van Dyke loved his newspaper montages, because they helped to keep the story moving. I think there's four or five of them in #AfterTheThinMan. #TCMParty

#TCMParty

Coit Tower was built with funds left by eccentric millionairess (we used to have them here before eccentric billionaire techbros) Lillie "Firebelle Lil" Coit, who was fascinated by firefighting and also bequeathed a memorial statue to S.F.'s firefighters. #AfterTheThinMan #TCMParty

#SOB is one of those films that took me multiple viewings to really "get" where it's going. There are a lot of layers to the satire, and the large cast is perfect; Richard Mulligan and Robert Webber are hilarious, and Larry Hagman was at the absolute height of his "Who shot J.R." fame. #TCMParty

#NoirChecklist for #CrimeWave: -Violence 90 seconds in -Murder 5 minutes in -Gruff cop with quirky habit -Ex-con blackmailed -Boozy ex-doctor who is... -not the guy named Doc -Heist gone wrong -Hostages -73 minutes of LA locations -More ginormous old cars than Jay Leno's garage #NoirAlley #TCMParty

I'm pretty sure that Leslie Nielsen was mostly channeling Sterling Hayden from #CrimeWave when he did Police Squad and the Naked Gun films. #NoirAlley #TCMParty

Choice: 1) Getting your fingernails pulled out; 2) Hanging out in an apartment alone with Timothy Carey Didn't need those fingernails, anyway... #CrimeWave #NoirAlley #TCMParty
