๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡บ With colleagues Magdalena Celuch, Emmi Kauppila, Iina Savolainen and Atte Oksanen ๐Ÿ” Overall, the paper highlights that online harms victimisation commonly manifests as poly-victimisation, but that the latter is perhaps less stable than offline poly-victimisation

โญ๏ธ Practical implications: anger rumination may serve as a warning sign that an individualsโ€™ perceived victimhood and personal grievances are translating into an increased vulnerability and potential escalation towards engagement in violent extremism, and thus may be a crucial point of intervention

During this rumination phase, there may be opportunities to intervene in the case by sign-posting critical information or warning signs about the consequences of going further than simply ruminating

โšก Findings demonstrate that experiencing personal grievances mediates the effect of individualsโ€™ tendency for interpersonal victimhood on anger rumination - and highlight mediating effects of revenge motivation and low self-control on individual attitudes and intentions regarding extremist violence

โœ‹ The study also demonstrates the indirect protective effects of trait forgiveness on support for and intentions to engage in extremist violence via its negative relationship with anger rumination, revenge motivation and low self-control

๐Ÿ”€ They use structural equation modelling to examine the effects of perceived victimhood, personal grievances, and anger rumination on attitudes and intentions to engage in violent extremism via revenge motivation and reduced self-control capacity

UU will lead baseline 'onlife' exposure national surveys in NZ, Czechia, Canada, The Netherlands and UK (with cascade funding for replication in other countries). UoT will use the survey data to test policy simulations.

UCL will lead work on individual risk assessment for fluid extremism, which will include upgrading an existing needs-management tool for intervention providers, working closely with SFU and PSC's data analysis unit led by Marc-Andrรฉ Argentino, PhD.

ONLIVES goes beyond producing new tools and social technologies tailored to todayโ€™s extremist threats, including NVE: it supports the procedural and structural adaptation of problem-owning organisations themselves (policy makers, police authorities, civil society) to keep up with these evolutions

Our horizon scanning activities will be driven by our security partners, supported by UCL and SFU. DCU will lead work on youth online exposure (including cascade funding to civil society organisations working with kids exposed to cross-harm threats), working with CU.

The threat posed by criminal extremism to liberal democratic societies is in an accelerating state of flux: its manifestations increasingly blur lines with other forms of serious criminality, test established ideological nomenclatures, ramp up severity of violence, and victimises young people

ONLIVES brings together security practitioners, policymakers, and researchers, leveraging collaborative foresight methods to enable the step-change required not only to counter extremism in its current forms but to anticipate and respond to its future iterations
