I’m impressed with myself. After three months, I’ve finished writing my novella. That’s the quickest I’ve gotten around to writing a complete draft. Though, it’s only the first draft. A few more months and I’ll have a completed story.

Writing a story about the dangers of Gen Ai is quite annoying since we don’t know if we’re going to see if it sticks long term or the bubble pops and we see it all crumble. Bro, I just want to write a dystopian thriller about it.

The next novel I’m working on is one that I’ve been envisioning to write for many years. While it may be a few years away from publication, I think I can share sample chapters to showcase the story in the next several months.

A process of writing that gen Ai could never replace is problem solving. Whenever you write out a story, you’ll see problems that you have to resolve and by fixing them it makes your work stronger. What Ai does is circumnavigate the process and leaves a hollow and thoughtless story.

My hatred of gen AI has given me the energy to write a story that’s close to being finished. So there’s a lesson here: hatred is a good motivator, especially a hatred against bad things.

You know when you’re reading a popular TikTok book and it’s pretty middling but you can’t dnf it because you’ve spent quite a bit of money on it, so you have to lock in just to say you’ve finished it.

It’s shocking that a game like Disco Elysium could be so well written, with almost no faltering in any part of its writing, that most games published after its release still haven’t caught up to the standards it has set.

The sequel to my debut, The End of Time, is proving to be difficult. I came up with the idea of setting the story on an alien world that resembles HR Giger’s biomechanical artwork back in 2017 and trying to capture that alienness is challenging.

However, I’ve managed to write over 60,000 words over the course of the year and I’m aiming to strike at least 100,000 or above. I’m optimistic about it, but it will require a lot of work to do it right.

I think the slow realisation I had about book publishing is the marketing side. That has been challenging to do because you’re trying to breach through the countless books out there to find the right people who would be interested in reading your story.

‘Gazing upon his waxen face up close…she found herself a witness to a nightmare of grotesquery cast into flesh; the tangy pores…the dye oozing out of his failing hair transplant and down the sides of his surgically tautened scalp, his unnatural white smile…it was too much to take.’ — Venus Fly Trap

I remember when I initially was going to publish my book through a hybrid. They were interested in it but took several months to get back to me. It was only when they tried to get me pay into their hybrid model and not the traditional one, considering they were offering both, that i turned it down.

I think one of the sad things about publishing in this environment is the countless books with obvious ai covers. A lot of time and money goes into trying to at least give your book a professional look but then it sits along side these low effort ai slop and they’re innumerable.

This book has been in the works a long time, and a lot of what I learned about writing and editing I learned from the immense privilege of getting to proofread it. As a creative, I wouldn't be where I am today without 'The End of Time'. Congratulations on this long-awaited release, Connor!

At long last, The End of Time, my debut novel, is out!

I will never understand the appeal to using Gen Ai for writing. The whole point in writing is to showcase how good you are at utilising language to evoke emotion and thought-provoking ideas. So having another tool do the thinking for you just showcases how untalented you are.

Physical books. You own them. They don't require updates. They don't surveil you or collect and sell your data. They are a genuinely safe hallucinogen that leaves you smarter and more empathetic and with a longer attention span the more you use them. Free from the library. What's not to like?
