I don't want to hear anybody saying that cyclists are ableist ever again.

Your tax dollars at work, folks. "Destruction crew removing accessible bus platforms along Bloor St bike lane at Islington as police guarded" #ontario #onpoli #dougford #dougfordiscorrupt www.reddit.com/r/toronto/co...

This has been true dozens of times over the history of computing. Right back to Blaise Pascal's mechanical calculator. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pascaline

If we took a person from 2016 and gave them a Turing test using a modern LLM (instructed to simulate human conversational patterns), they would assume the LLM to be human 10 times out of 10, because it would be unfathomable that anything but a human could respond this way. 10 years, not 500.

"If you took a person from 1635 and asked them to evaluate the pascaline's arithmetic, they would assume the pascaline to be human 10 times out of 10, because it would be unfathomable that anything but a human could do basic multiplication.

When I go, I don't want to be left in a hermetically sealed vault to be slowly forgotten about. Giving people a reason to go past their final resting place, even if just on the way somewhere else, is one of the best ways to honour the dead, imho.

This would: a) Replace some of the safety for cyclists that the bike lanes provided b) Make it clear to people that cyclists are not going away, and that this is not a traffic congestion reducing measure c) Put political pressure on Ford

Set a rally point (maybe post a sign) and an interval (say, 5 or 10 minutes). People wanting to ride in a bit more safety and/or protest the removals wait there, gather in numbers, and depart all together. They then use safety in numbers to take the lane. No need to ride that fast either.

I get that hippies are really annoying but some people make "not being a hippy" such a load-bearing element of their personality that they go and say stuff like "organic produce is bad for the environment".

Sara Straw@oneoneder.bsky.social

True, but on a non-caloric basis, they do eat lots of beef and organic produce, which are both terrible for environment

IDGAF about the anti-GMO stuff but not using synthetic fertilizers reduces the need for synthetic fertilizer, which is extremely difficult to produce without huge amounts of natural gas. It's one of the hardest-to-decarbonize industries. Synthetic fertilizers also cause eutrophication.

Can we feed the world on only organic produce? Idk, probably not? It's certainly reasonable to say that organic food is not a practical solution for all aspects of the global food system. But that's not the same as saying it's bad for the environment.

This is like a 17th century aristocrat saying "actual rebellions against the King always result in millenniarian cults and violent civil disorder". And they'd be mostly right! But then people went and invented democracy. We can do new things.

People sometimes interpret a slogan in different ways, so we default to the most violent and offensive interpretation and apply that to everyone who says it. Good thing most social movements don't have internal disagreements about how to interpret their slogans or this could be a real problem!

Henry @henrythedog.bsky.social

and of course for others "Free Palestine" means "fuck the Jews" and everyone thinks they're saying the same thing, and defends it no matter the context because who could be against peace? or two states?

I think I need to start a running thread where I track all the people who just randomly attach the word "degrowth" to a political, economic, or cultural opinion they don't like. Usually in a way that bears no relation whatsoever on what degrowth actually means. Here's the first one:

I'm mostly pretty blase about these and sometimes amused by them. But conflating #degrowth with Stephen Miller is genuinely gross. Degrowth is a shift from economic growth to human welfare as the goal of human societies. Miller is, obviously, anti-human-welfare. bsky.app/profile/tepi...

Instant and permanent revocation of driver's license for anyone convicted of driving like this. And enforce it with cameras.

Lanrick Bennett@lanrickbennett.bsky.social

"As our courts reporter Betsy Powell wrote, Mitchel Hunter, 21, after being charged under the Highway Traffic Act with stunt driving for going 50 km/h or more over the limit and other offences in the fatal collision, was charged again earlier this year for stunt driving in an unrelated case."

I am a degrowth YIMBY. These positions are not just compatible; they are actively complementary. I want us to build new housing and infrastructure that facilitates dense, car-free, zero-emission cities. Radically reducing the need for cars is a big component of degrowth!

Furthermore: I think NIMBYism is driven in large part by the financial incentives of homeowners to see their homes' values continue to increase indefinitely, due to artificial scarcity in the housing market. It's not hard to see how this springs out of a growth-dependent political economy.

If the growth treadmill demands that we all maintain a portfolio of appreciating investments just to break even, then of course people are going to want to ensure that their house (i.e., most people's single biggest investment) continues to appreciate in value!

What is it with security states and hating kites? I remember way back during the Toronto G20, they imposed a city-wide ban on kites.

Ben Dowsett@bendowsett.bsky.social

Love my taxes being used to bomb children attempting to fly kites. This is an ideal use of money

I plan to support sustainable farming by buying a lot of sustainably-grown produce and setting it on fire. If you object to this then you don't understand basic economics.

AI datacenters are investing too much in clean energy and must be stopped

More seriously: The issue that this take misses is TIME. We need to decarbonise our electricity supply for actually useful things as soon as humanly possible, and if we waste the available solar capacity on non-useful things, that slows us down. Meanwhile the sky in Toronto was yellow this summer.

Yes, sure, demand from data centers might push renewable energy further down the experience curve, which could increase the rate at which renewables can substitute for fossils in the future. But we need to phase out fossil energy right now. We need every megawatt of non-fossil capacity we can get.

This analogy between crime stats and economic stats is nonsense. Crime is a lot more straightforward to measure than the health of the economy. There are maybe a few dozen crimes that people really care about. Most of them can be simply counted. If that number is up then crime is up. Simple.

Will Stancil@whstancil.bsky.social

What’s interesting is that I’ve received dozens of explanations and not a single person said “well, you know, maybe the statistics are failing to capture people’s lived experiences.” Not a single one of you has trouble understanding public perception is often wrong when you’re not invested in it!

Even if good data exists for every one of those indicators, it's doubtful that Will Stancil or even any professional economist has personally looked at all that relevant data for every income bracket, state and city, etc. It would be thousands of separate data points at least.

The last two posts in the degrowth feed provide a good illustration of the absurd boogeymanning that gets applied to degrowth. Imagine being this upset about a philosophy that in practice is mostly about lending libraries etc. Imagine believing it to be so terrible you won't even discuss it.

Years ago I imagined I'd probably reach this moment at some point in my life. When the climate apocalypse becomes physically, tangibly, obvious. When it starts to directly affect the place I live. I imagined it would be more dramatic than this. That people would panic. Or get violent. Or something.

I thought about which model of facemask would achieve the best version of apocalypse-chic for my daily bike ride to work. Might as well make it look cool I guess. Become a character from an apocalyptic movie in image if not in lifestyle.

It reminds me of what I've heard from people who've seen combat in Ukraine. How dull it can be. Even if you're being shelled. A bit of exciting personal drama might be a small consolation in the midst of all the destruction. But the universe does not oblige. The crisis is boring.

This past month, it happened. A turbocharged thunderstorm wiped out Canada Day and flooded much of the city. A heatwave kept us indoors for days on end. Tornado warnings. The sky is dusty yellow and my throat hurts. And yet people are still just going to work as normal. So am I.

What is it about degrowth that makes so many people want to lump it in with other, much worse ideas? NIMBYism, malthusianism, anarcho-primitivism, etc. Degrowth is none of these things!

William B. Fuckley@opinionhaver.bsky.social

Increasingly think we need a ‘modernity is actually good’ political tendency. the right is putatively pro-industry and economic growth but thinks science is gay and wants to throw out vaccines for essential oils, the left putatively believes science but also embraces crank degrowth NIMBYism

You can avoid the moral dilemma here if you just unbundle the proposal a bit. De-fund stuff that is not essential for survival, like road repairs etc. Leave health care and food aid alone. It'd be less regressive anyway. Crumbling roads inconvenience everyone. No medicaid just hurts poor people.

Broke: Degrowth is when tariffs. Woke: Degrowth is when catcalling. (Degrowth is a specific political/economic program that has nothing to do with either of these things)

"'I don't want to be catcalled' is entitlement" - moronic theorybrained misogynist Probably would be fine with some gay/trans bashing too if it meant rents stayed that much lower. Fuck degrowth nimby scum.
