This interview with @peircej.bsky.social on @psychopy.org was a lovely little history of the tool, but also an insightful discussion of open source development in academia. Particularly the transition towards LTD company structure is quite unique to PsychoPy and worthwhile to hear about!

Code for Thought / Peter Schmidt@code4thought.bsky.social

This week on #code4thought [EN] we dive into the world of behavioural science with my guest @peircej.bsky.social , author of the open source library PsychoPy. Find out how it became the go to tool in the field. Out now on your podcast, YouTube and codeforthought.buzzsprout.com/1326658/epis...

We had a theory-in-psychology workshop last year, and wrote up the paper "Theorytopia: Psychological Science in 2050". I think it's an inspiring and funny read. If you know of a good journal to send this to, or know an interested editor, would you let me know? <3 osf.io/preprints/ps...

What I love about academia is the random little jobs. For example, today I had to manually edit the xml of a Word document to save a student's corrupted manuscript, and then I had to effectively break into a building to teach because my classroom was locked and there was nobody on site to help.

If you're unsure about modern medicine and whether to vaccinate your kids, I recommend visiting a local church's old graveyard. Look at the ages of the deceased. It's utterly devastating just how many children are buried there. We don't have to repeat this.

Serious science question from one kid: "What happens to time in a black hole?" My highly inexpert answer was followed by the other kid: "What about if I threw a poo at a black hole?" Very relieved to know I only have to save up for one round of university tuition.

Ah, yes, this is the well-known standard set by ISO666 for computer code: compressed images of plain-text files pasted into a proprietary text editor format.

So, ehm, what the fish is happening? This seems like a weird way to self-immolate for one of the world’s foremost* institutions in this space? *Previously, now apparently a fish shop.

Average editor: Tick suggested names, send automated review requests. Good editor: Find relevant reviewers, send personalised messages. IEEE Systems Journal: Keep spamming the same potential reviewers even after they reject multiple times. One hundred “no” and one “yes” means “yes”, baby!

On the one hand, it's great to know people are using sunscreen. On the other, I would have preferred to learn this through other means than slipping off the building's greasy (but fresh-smelling!) door handle.

Big "for me, it was Tuesday" energy. Also, not all of us are like this! Some of us have a pathological need to be liked and will randomly wake up, drenched in sweat, stressing about that one slightly negative comment on an evaluation from 2021. Students can (and should) abuse these character flaws.

If you are a professor students have all sorts of reactions to you, ranging from passionate dislike, through intense crushes, utter indifference, idolising admiration, and into contemptuous disdain. What I think students rarely appreciate though is how asymmetric this is.

Finally had enough of my smart watch. Constant notifications, patronising reminders, and low sleep scores for waking to attend children. I used to sell expensive watches. Disliked over-affluent customers, but loved the mechanisms. This one isn't particularly high-end, but so much less disruptive!

I always had the vague feeling that Scientific Reports and Nature Communications are mainly APC business models. A paper estimated the total APC for gold/hybrid Open Access per journal 2015–2018: doi.org/10.1162/qss_... Surprise, surprise - there are 2 outliers at the top😐

The one thing I really appreciate about modern academic publishers is how much value they add. Their copy-editing is of such a high standard that they wouldn’t, for example, publisher a paper with two errors in the title.

Now, I’m not a native English speaker and a producer of many typo’s. I get it. Some of my mistakes made it into published work, I’m sure of it. But in the title?! Four authors, at least one editor, peer reviewers, and professional copy-editors ought to have looked at this. Did everyone miss this?

Transparency is the default for windows, but we typically make an exception for those in bathrooms. So if you’re reading Psych Science on the toilet, you don’t have to preregister. Fully agree with @dingdingpeng.the100.ci: I don’t see what people find so hard about this.

This was a fun and humbling experience. I was smug initially, before close-reading the rules and finding no contemporary data was allowed! MUCH harder to predict depression onsets with only 3+ month old data... I combined p-hacking, naive Bayes, and Kohonen maps; but doubt it’ll be good enough.

Many are appropriately outraged by Altman’s comments here implying that raising a human child is akin to “training” an AI model. This is part of a broader pattern where AI industry leaders use language that collapses the boundary between human and machine. 🧵/

SAM ALTMAN: “People talk about how much energy it takes to train an AI model … But it also takes a lot of energy to train a human. It takes like 20 years of life and all of the food you eat during that time before you get smart.”
