Diversity responses to forest management intensity are often compared broadly among management systems. This can obscure the effects of individual interventions and management-related structures. In a new 📄 we use a continuous intensity index to disentangle both across systems tinyurl.com/bdh9cvw4

tinyurl.comEffects of forest management intensity on multi-alpha and multi-beta diversityCommercial forestry is a major threat to biodiversity. Its effects on forest biodiversity remain unresolved, partly because major management component…

We investigated six deadwood-associated species groups in a full-factorial experiment, as well as multi-alpha and multi-beta diversity. We then compared managment intensity as grades of tree removal, deadwood amount, tree composition and stand maturity across forests in Germany.

Overall management intensity had no clear effect on multi-alpha diversity, but tree removal and tree-species composition strongly reshaped beta diversity. Low- to medium-intensity management may enhance local diversity, while altered tree composition can fundamentally change communities.

Our global analysis of ecosystem functions and services is online now! This is probably the paper I'm most proud of - a quantitative, global map of every one of the IPBES ecosystem service categories, all tracked back to the original data! www.nature.com/articles/s41...

nature.comBiodiversity safeguards ecosystem services and functions worldwide - Nature Ecology & EvolutionAn analysis of a global database of 423 studies and >200,000 data points outlines the strength and generality of biodiversity relationships with ecosystem functioning and services.

New 📄 out led by @chao-guo.bsky.social In addition to elevation and local conditions we further investigated the effects of invertebrates across substrates, again with partly contrasting effects. It’s super interesting how different decomposition of various substrates takes place

Is there generality in decomposition across substrates? We tested this in an experiment across elevation, studying carrion, dung, leaves & wood. We found idiosynchratic patterns of decomp, with local conditions being more important than macroclimate @sebseibold.bsky.social doi.org/10.1002/ecm....

Over the next few years, this experiment will investigate how summer droughts (precipitation exclusion via roofs) and microclimatic variability (altered soil contact) affect deadwood-inhabiting diversity, associated processes, under different forest management regimes across different regions

I’m thrilled to finally see months of hard work in action! Despite losing nerves while organising, moving tons of material within hours by hand 💪, sorting screws for hours, professional screwing or driving around Germany for days to distribute materials - it was a blast ❤️‍🔥

Always interesting to see how phenology changes by a few hundred kilometers. Sampling BEClimWood in Schorfheide and there weren‘t as many spring geophytes already flowering as in Hainich, but more animals around. Also saw some cranes, white-tailed eagles, whooper and Bewick's swans!

First week of fieldwork this year successfully completed! We've been extremely lucky with this nice spring weather while taking the first samples from the new BEClimWood experiment in Hainich at the @bexplo.bsky.social Big thanks again to this great team! First 🌷 were also popping up everywhere

HIRING! We are looking for a new PhD student to work on insects in deadwood, effects of microclimate and land use. This is part of the Biodiversity Exploratories @bexplo.bsky.social and will use a new experiment using rain-out shelters in different regions of Germany. EU driver´s licence required.

Preparations for our new #deadwood experiment BEClimWood are in full swing! 🌳 The experiment explores how land use & #climate factors shape #biodiversity around deadwood. Our local management team is hard at work—moving stones (one weighed 28.5 kg!) to set up the logs at the Hainich Exploratory. 💪

First day at this years #gfoe2025 was a blast! See you at the deadwood session on Wednesday which I am hosting with my colleague Julia Moll. Talks will cover different species groups 🍄🦠🪲🐜 and processes in temperate and tropical forest. See you there!! @gfoesoc.bsky.social

New 📃 out, led by @LeahVogelfänger. While the ecology of saproxylic beetles is well studied, other invertebrates often come up short. Studying 15 taxa across 8 years, we found that—unlike for beetles—tree species mattered little for the communities of these diverse groups. 🌳 @bexplo.bsky.social
