What is the IceCube neutrino observatory? Neutrinos are elusive particles that rarely interact, but can create flashes of light when they do. Most neutrino detectors are giant water tanks surrounded by light detectors. IceCube is kilometer-long strings of detectors embedded in the Antarctic ice.

Physics World@physicsworld.bsky.social

A rare solo #NobelPrize in physics goes to neutrino scientist Francis Halzen “for decisive contributions to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin”. Full coverage here: physicsworld.com/a/francis-ha... 🧪⚛️

In last years budget, SEAI was allocated €640 million to support home retrofit. Min Chambers has just announced that SEAI will get €654.5 million in 2027 for retrofit. A €14.5 million increase. A 2% increase.

The fine for riding an e-scooter without a hi-viz vest, so that a careless motorist *might* see you (€100), will be higher than the fine for the same motorists if a Garda stops them for driving carelessly (€80). 🤷‍♂️

We should only grant permission to new data centres if they meet some basic environmental conditions - use renewable energy, leave enough over to allow us to decarbonise the grid, and connect to district heating schemes instead of wasting heat and water.

I was listening on the radio to the president of the IFA, Francie Gorman welcome the extended fuel excise cuts, make an unprompted attack on carbon tax and the immediately launch into how farmers are struggling due to the hot summer as if there was no relation between those items…

We can watch the fires come closer every year. Or we can try to stop climate change from getting worse. Choose hope.

Virgin Media News@virginmedianews.bsky.social

Nearly 300,000 people have been forced to flee their homes as devastating wildfires continue to spread across France and Spain. Bordeaux officials are considering a total evacuation of the city if needed, while firefighters in Spain say some blazes are spreading too quickly to tackle head-on.

You sometimes see Government TDs pointing out that Ireland isn’t unique in the world in having a housing crisis. But this graph in today’s Financial Times shows just how extreme ours is compared to the places elsewhere, which also describe themselves as a in a housing crisis.

Last week, I questioned the Minister Seán Canney, on this. Disappointingly, he deflected focus from the shortcomings of the RSA as a state body to discuss how “we all have a responsibility in saving lives on our roads.” When everyone is responsible, no one is responsible, Minister.

Where the school survey indicates any significant proportion of parents wanting a denominational school to be non-denominational; then that should be listened to. Forcing a religious ethos on a minority is a much greater harm than not having the desired religious this of the majority

If your response to the racist riots in Belfast is to talk in anyway about immigration, then the rioters win. Same with the fuel blockades earlier in the year; if you accede to their demands in anyway, you just embolden bad actors to cause more disruption in the future

For years the Gardaí refused my requests for information on the type of road users injured in accidents in Galway. It was a nonsense GDPR answer. This infomation is now available on the RSA website at www.rsa.ie/road-safety/... Not surprising that most serious injuries are to pedestrians.

Ballymoneen Road Upper needs a bus - and the NTA are now telling us it won't happen until after the ring road. It is absurd that simple public transport is being held ransom to the ring road.

A quick little note on the two constituency opinion polls. Galway West has huge variance compared to GE 2024 due to the absence of high profile independent, SF and FF candidates. Dublin Central is much more stable.

I’m very shocked that the SocDems voted to gut the Climate Act

“This vote is a mistake. It upends our planning system & undermines the law underpinning our country’s climate ambition. “It is astonishing that parties of the left would endorse a Bill which undermines the very Climate Action Act that they supported only 5 years ago” @rodericogorman.bsky.social

Just worth saying, for absolutely legal clarity: the government does not have the legal prerogative to abolish carbon tax in its entirety. Carbon tax is a form of excise, and EU directives require excise on diesel to be a minimum of 33c per litre. (1/2)
